Achaemenid Pool Discovered in Iran’s Pasargadae

Achaemenid Pool Discovered in Iran’s Pasargadae

Their findings are based on magnetic maps drawn in the southeastern part of the royal garden of Pasargadae Complex.

Director of Pasargadae World Heritage Site Afshin Ebrahimi told IRNA that the pool was discovered in the fifth phase of the archaeological work of Iran and France scientific teams.

In this phase of the team’s work, sections between the main palace and the public palace, and an area between the inn and the tomb of Cyrus the Great were explored, he noted.

Ebrahimi said that after the excavations in the garden area there were six holes, showing that the pool probably had water inlets belonging to the Achaemenid era.

He stated that the boundaries of the royal garden belong to the Achaemenid period and a trapezoidal pool was first observed.

“The fifth phase of the archaeological cooperation between Iran and France at Pasargadae Complex was carried out on the basis of a memorandum of understanding concluded five years ago. This phase was carried out by magnetometry at the Pasargadae World Complex and during these five stages all the costs of research and excavation were paid by the University of Lyon and the Iranian team also supported these activities.

The complex includes buildings such as the tomb of Cyrus, Pasargadae, Pasargadae Royal Garden, Gate Palace, Public Palace, Special Palace, Two Towers, King’s Garden Fountains, Cambyses Tomb, Defence Structures, Mozaffari Caravanserai, Holy Campground, and Bolaghi passage.
The collection is the fifth in the list of Iranian World Heritage Sites and was registered at the UNESCO meeting held in China in July 2008.

Iran, Turkey Mull Cooperation on Artificial Intelligence

In a Tuesday meeting with Turkey’s Deputy Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Omer Fatih Sayan, Iranian ICT Minister Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi described the sessions of an expert committee of cooperation on information technology as a major step in promoting mutual cooperation between Iran and Turkey.

“The two countries’ determination to enhance political ties is unequaled. There are common targets, and the two countries have strong motive for fulfilling those purposes,” the Iranian minister added.

The world’s future would be shaped by digital economy, Azari Jahromi noted, calling for plans to promote mutual cooperation to enable Tehran and Ankara to have a share of the digital economy.

Pointing to an invitation from Turkish Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Mehmet Cahit Turhan to a meeting of the information technology ministers from the members of D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation, Azari Jahromi expressed hope that the outcome of a session of the expert committee of mutual cooperation would result in a ministerial meeting of the Joint Commission on the sidelines of the D-8 conference.

The digital economy is based upon artificial intelligence, the Iranian minister added, noting, “The truth is that artificial intelligence (technology) would not be acquired with slogans. We must try to create wealth in two spheres, the artificial intelligence and the data sciences.”

Highlighting Iran’s growing investment in artificial intelligence in recent years, Azari Jahromi said the Islamic Republic has developed the technology of self-driving smart cars, has unveiled delivery drones for postal service, and is carrying out research on artificial intelligence in parallel with the advanced countries.

He also warned that the failure to invest in modern technologies, such as the artificial intelligence, would turn a country into a mere consumer in future, as the economic inequality is widening in the world.

The advances in artificial intelligence require mutual cooperation, Azari Jahromi emphasized.

The Iranian minister further stressed the need to carry out the agreements made in a four-party conference of the telecommunication ministers of Iran, Russia, Turkey and the Republic of Azerbaijan, expressing hope for closer bilateral and regional cooperation in the field of new technologies.

The Turkish deputy minister, for his part, highlighted the leading role of information technology in the future economy, saying a road map to development, endorsed by the presidents of Turkey and Iran, entails investment in information technology.

“We believe, as well, that we need to promote mutual cooperation on the new technologies, such as artificial intelligence, and we have the needed preparedness in this regard,” Sayan added.

He finally reaffirmed Turley’s commitment to the results of the four-party meeting of the telecommunication ministers in Tehran, saying his country is ready to host the next meeting of ministers of Iran, Turkey, Russia and the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Researchers Remove Sulfur from Petrol to Decrease Air Pollution

One of the major sources of environmental pollution are sulfur compounds, according to Iran’s Vice Presidency for Science and Technology, and removal of sulfur from these compounds is a very important part of modern purification.

Given the importance of this issue, researchers at the University of Isfahan decided to conduct research to remove these compounds. Removal of sulfur compounds from petroleum samples by both oxidative sulfur desorption and adsorption using metal-organic structures is a research topic supported by the Vice-Presidency’s Fund for Research and Technology.

Shahram Tangestani-Nejad, the executive researcher of the project, said due to the dramatic changes in environmental laws in different parts of the world based on existing refining technology, efforts have been made to decrease sulfur levels in fuels. Because sulfur-containing compounds have an adverse effect on the quality of petroleum products.

Sulfur organic compounds make up the bulk of the sulfur compounds in crude oil. “Iran is one of the countries with the highest amount of organic sulfur compounds in its oil reserves,” he added.

Combustion of fuels from crude oils such as diesel and gasoline products emits sulfur oxides that pollute the environment and causes acid rains and inactivation of chemical catalysts.

Due to the need to pay attention to environmental issues through the synthesis of catalysts based on metal-organic structures, the results of this study are widely used to provide an efficient method for sulfur removal from petroleum compounds.

According to this report, the current technique used by the industries to remove sulfur from crude oil is hydrogen sulfurisation through breaking the oil fluid catalytically.

Refining in heavier crude oils and those with higher levels of sulfur, is both financially and environmentally not cost-effective, so alternative methods of desulfurisation have been taken into consideration.

Iranian Cleric Promoting Book-Reading among Children in Deprived Areas

Esmail Azarinejad is now a well-known cleric. He is a cultural activist and spends most of his time narrating stories for children, taking care of affairs pertaining to schools in remote areas and reforming some of social and economic affairs in deprived areas.

So far, he has had interviews with the British daily The Guardian as well as several other media outlets from countries in the region and a number of domestic news agencies. He is regarded as a media outlet himself. He posts his viewpoints and his activities on social media such as Twitter and Instagram. He also puts posts about shortcomings. Many political, social and cultural figures follow him in the cyberspace and react to his postings.

“Unfortunately, our city and province are in a deprived region. When I was a child, we were even worse off. My father and mother were illiterate, but my aunt’s husband, who was a teacher, encouraged me to read books,” he says.

Years later, Azarinejad went to Qom and studied at the city’s Islamic Theology School. Simultaneously, he received his Bachelor’s degree in sociology and Master’s degree in mysticism. Although he was offered a job involving scientific research, he preferred to live beside deprived people in Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad province be with them to help solve their cultural problems.

When Azarinejad returned to the town where he had grown up, he became the Imam of one of the local mosques and began teaching at the small theology school in the town. However, his more important objective was to promote book-reading among people, especially children and youth. So, he launched a book-reading and story-reading circle that met after congregational prayers at the mosque. After some time, he began to lend books to those interested. He promoted the book-reading practice and spread it to remote villages.

He would fill the trunk of his car with books and go to deprived areas, most of the time accompanied by his wife and two children. At the beginning, he made friends with children by playing happy games with them. Then he began to teach them cultural activities and how to read books.

“In the rural areas of Kohgiluyeh, children, boys and girls alike, are regarded as workforce. Since the very early childhood, they must pick acorns and go shepherding. Sufferings and day-to-day affairs takes childhood from them, and fathers and mothers cannot spend time for their children. So, my first attempt was to approach them through fun and games to encourage them to tell stories and read books,” he says.

“I began to approach them through story-telling in order to be able to talk to children,” he says.

“Through concepts in the story, I encourage children to think. This is the way for intellectual development in order to transcend the appearance and reach the depth of materials; moreover, through this method, children get used to conversation from very early ages,” he says.

“Peace and security will not take place unless through consultation and dialogue. Tolerance to opposing views is a necessity for the future generation. Science makes progress with two things: wisdom and experience, and children grow with the same very experience,” he notes
He also works with benefactors to help renovate and refurbish schools.

His bigger goal is to help improve the economic situation of villages. For example, he has helped run small workshops to create jobs.

Azarinejad’s cultural activities has received widespread coverage in the court of public opinion, especially among the elite. So, he has been picked as one of 11 popular figures of the year.
