Iran, UN-Habitat Sign Agreement on Joint Projects

Iran, UN-Habitat Sign Agreement on Joint Projects

In a meeting in Tehran on December 25, Iranian Deputy Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts Mohammad Hassan Talebian and Chairman of the UN-Habitat Disaster Mitigation Office in Tehran, Mehmet Emin Akdogan, signed a memorandum of understanding, according to which the two sides would work together to create capacities for, promote, and carry out the joint plans and projects on conservation and improvement of durability of the cultural and natural heritage, sustainable development, urban engineering, as well as the protection and improvement of districts.

“The memorandum includes subjects such as the energy produced by the windmills and wind catchers, or how such energy could be used in the life of people. The other types of green and clean energies are also taken into account,” the Iranian deputy minister said.

According to Talebian, the agreement also entails a crisis management plan for the Qal’eh Dokhtar (Dokhtar castle) in Firoozabad in the Fars Province and also part of the historic district of Dezful, which he said are facing many problems such as excessive structural loads.

The Iranian deputy minister added that the agreement also entails a special program for the historic district of Kang village to conserve its tangible and intangible heritage, as well as a plan to protect and promote the adobe structures in Iran’s Boshrouyeh, Tabas and Yazd in cooperation with the UN-Habitat.

He also unveiled plans for cooperation with a number of domestic organizations to carry out the joint projects, such as the Road, Housing and Urban Development Research Center of the Iranian Ministry of Roads and Urban Development, and the Yazd University, which have established adobe research centers.

“Plans are going to be proposed for those projects. This memorandum provides a general framework, and we will most probably work on joint projects with the United Nations Human Settlements Programme in various international spheres. I believe that signing of this memorandum was a major development, because the projects are clear from our viewpoint, and we can easily put them into practice,” Talebian noted.

The Iranian deputy minister finally noted that a joint workshop will be held in the historic district of Kang in February 2020 to allow the experts and university professors to discuss the projects and reach a conclusion.

INSTEX of No Use If Oil Revenues Not Secured: Iran

Iran’s Top Banker Urges IMF to Remain Neutral

In an interview with Fars News Agency on the prospect of a special European financial channel for Iran called INSTEX, Abdolnasser Hemmati said the Islamic Republic has prepared everything in terms of regulation and organisation.

Following the unilateral withdrawal of the United States from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, three European countries pledged to set up a mechanism to safeguard trade ties between Iran and Europe against the backdrop of US sanctions.

England, France and Germany first introduced the Special Purpose Vehicle known as the SPV, but after nine months, they finally implemented another mechanism as part of the SPV, called INSTEX, in February 2018.

Iran Congratulates Uzbekistan on Successful Elections

Iran Congratulates Uzbekistan on Successful Elections

Parliamentary elections were held in Uzbekistan on 22 December 2019, with a second round on 5 January 2020. They are the first votes held after the death of Islam Karimov in 2016.
People in Uzbekistan voted for a parliament with a 71.1-percent turnout, which the Central Election Committee called a success and great achievement for the country.

Uzbekistan used a Unified Electronic Voter List for the first time, with more than 20.5 million voters registered, according to the CEC.

In these elections, 128 deputies of the 150-seat lower house of the Uzbek parliament were elected and the second round of the elections will be held in two weeks.

The Liberal Democratic Party of Uzbekistan led the vote, winning 43 seats, and the National Revival Democratic Party came second with 35 seats, CEC Chairman Mirza-Ulugbek Abdusalomov said, adding that the Social Democratic Party Adolat got 21 seats and ranked third, followed by the People’s Democratic Party and the Ecological Party, winning 18 and 11 seats respectively so far.

Zarif Holds Phone Talks with Kuwaiti PM, FM

Iran Sees 'Bright Prospect' for Strategic Cooperation with China: Zarif

In the Wednesday talks, the Iranian foreign minister congratulated the two Kuwaiti officials on their new positions.

They also exchanged views on bilateral relations, regional issues, and the Hormuz Peace Endeavour (HOPE) initiative proposed by Iran.

Kuwait formed a new government on December 17 that replaced the son of the emir as defence minister and named an interior minister from outside the ruling family, a month after the former cabinet quit due to a row between members of the family and parliament.

The oil minister of the OPEC producer retained his post while new foreign and finance ministers were named, the state news agency KUNA said.

Kuwait has a parliament wielding power to pass legislation and question ministers, although senior posts are occupied by ruling family members.

Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah last month tapped then foreign minister Sheikh Sabah al-Khalid al-Sabah to take over as premier and form a cabinet. The prime minister traditionally helps navigate often tense relationships between parliament and government. The emir has final say in state matters.

The key post of oil minister remained occupied by Khaled al-Fadhel, but Ahmad Mansour al-Ahmad al-Sabah was appointed defense minister, Anas Khaled Nasser al-Saleh became interior minister, and Ahmad Nasser al-Mohammad al-Sabah became foreign affairs minister.

Iran, Russia, China to Start Joint Military Drills Friday

At a news conference on Wednesday, senior Spokesman for Iranian Armed Forces, Brigadier General Abolfazl Shekarchi, said the joint exercises between Iran, Russia and China will be held as of Friday.

Referring to the importance of the maneuver, he said the Indian Ocean and the Sea of Oman are key areas for the world trade, and many countries navigate through this region, so providing its security is of crucial significance.

“Iran has so far proven that it always strives to provide security for international waterways, especially in this key area. Therefore, this exercise will also be held to enhance the experience of ensuring safety of international trade in the region,” he added.

He said the exchange of security experience between Tehran, Moscow and Beijing and counter-terrorism and piracy as well as countering terrorism and piracy are among the other goals of the drill.

Shekarchi further noted that the security achievements of this exercise will be for all countries of the world and it will lead to more stability.

The Iranian general also said that the other goal of the exercise is to gain and exchange experience in the field of marine rescue operations, which will be carried out since the launch of the exercise.

‘Iran Not Violating Any Convention by Reducing JCPOA Commitments’

Lifting of Sanctions Precursor to Potential Talks with JCPOA Parties: Iran

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a weekly cabinet session in Tehran on Wednesday, Vaezi said what the Europeans have claimed in connection with a reduction in Iran’s JCPOA commitments had no legal basis.

“In the four steps that have been taken (by Iran) to reduce the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) commitments, no measure has been taken in violation of the relevant conventions, and the Europeans’ claim on this issue does not have a legal basis by any means,” he added.

Asked about the EU’s threat to resort to the so-called ‘snapback mechanism’ for restoring the UN sanctions on Iran, Vaezi said, “The Europeans are seeking to provide their own public opinion with an explanation vis-à-vis the Iranian measures. So, what they have proposed about using the snapback mechanism will not take place, and they themselves are resolved to hold negotiations and reach a deal.”

The president’s chief of staff further dismissed the allegations of human rights violation in Iran, saying the West has employed human rights as a political tool to mount pressure on the others.

Denouncing the West’s double standards on human rights, Vaezi said the Western governments violate the rights of religious minorities and the coloured people and have cordial relations with certain Middle East counties which ignore the basic principles of human rights.

According to a recent report by Reuters, the three European parties to the nuclear deal said they were likely to trigger a dispute resolution process in January but would stop short of rushing to restore UN sanctions on Iran that would kill off the accord.

Six European and Western diplomats said Britain, France and Germany had agreed in principle to begin the process but they would still wait to see how significant Iran’s steps were before taking a final decision, according to the report.

The measure is also known as the trigger mechanism and its activation can lead to the return of the UN sanctions against Iran.

Diplomats said the Europeans would focus on extending the process rather than pushing towards sanctions unless Iran’s upcoming steps crossed an unacceptable threshold.

Iran’s reduction to its commitments comes in response to the US’ withdrawal from the agreement and the E3’s failure to fulfill their obligations under the JCPOA and to salvage it.

Iran Gov’t Spokesman Calls Reuters ‘Liar’

Speaking on Wednesday, Rabiei said “we need to break down the exact death toll immediately, but the number announced by Reuters is strongly rejected.”

Asked about anti-Iran accusations, leveled by Western countries, regarding alleged human rights abuses during the November incidents in Iran, he criticized the Westerners’ double standards when dealing with the issue of human rights.

Rabiei, at the same, noted that “we are not a government to hide domestic issues. A committee has been set up to fully investigate these incidents.”

“We are much more sensitive about human rights and believe that Western countries’ behaviour is interfering in Iran’s internal affairs.”

Reuters earlier claimed around 1,500 people have been killed during recent riots over fuel price hikes across Iran.

The news outlet said in a report on Monday that, “About 1,500 people were killed during less than two weeks of unrest that started on November 15, including at least 17 teenagers and about 400 women as well as some members of the security forces and police.”

Reuters claimed that the figures had been provided “by three Iranian interior ministry officials,” without further elaboration or naming any of them.

In another reaction head of Iran’s SNSC’s Information and Communications Secretariat dismissed the Reuters’ report and said such claims were based on “false propaganda.”
