Tehran museum director removed after performer dives into artistic work

Tehran’s Museum of Contemporary Arts

The performance dubbed “Silk Road Cat” involved acrobatics over the famous pond of the Museum of Contemporary Arts.

As a result of the performance, the artist doing the acrobatics hit the oil inside the pond, causing the oil to splash around. Following the incident, the director of the performance stopped short of an apology and simply published videos of the performance in cyberspace.

The museum also said on its Instagram account that hitting the oil was not part of the performance at all and that this happened only by accident.

Further inquiry showed the incident only caused some oil to splash around and that the work of art dubbed “Substance and Thought” created by a Japanese artist, was not damaged.

But critics called for the resignation of the director of the museum, which prompted the deputy minister of culture and Islamic guidance to replace Ehsan Aghaei with Ebadreza Eslami Koulaei.

Meanwhile, Reza Dabirinejad, a cultural researcher, criticized the decision to do the performance over the artistic work, saying such moves leads to a loss of public trust in the museum’s mission to protect its precious cultural artifacts.

Iran Russia ambassador: New alliance developing against US

Kazem Jalali

He said it is necessary that Iranians get to know the New Russia, adding a weakness in Iran is that many people have little knowledge about Russia and the country’s capacities.

He said that’s also the case in Russia and that many Russians have no knowledge about Iran.

The Iranian ambassador to Moscow added that Russia has been trying to reassert its global role for the past two decades and it has stood up to American unilateralism.

Today, Jalali noted, a synergy is brewing worldwide against Western unilateralism and this means the world is finding common ground over the issue.

He said Iran and Russia must stand together in the Caucasus, Afghanistan and West Asia as neither of the two countries thinks of NATO’s eastward expansion as being in its national interest.

Covid-19 claims 114 more lives in Iran as Nowruz draws close

COVID in Iran

The Health Ministry said on Monday that the total number of fatalities from the disease had surpassed 139,000.

It also registered more than 3,800 new cases of the disease. Iran has moved past the peak of its sixth Covid-19 wave which was triggered by a highly transmissible variant known as Omicron.

The relatively lower deaths in recent months has been largely attributed to an intensified vaccination campaign which has seen a total of over 145 million doses of vaccine administered in the Islamic Republic. Well over 56 million people in Iran have so far been fully vaccinated while more than 25,200,000 have received their booster jabs.

Iranian health officials say people who have received at least two doses of Covid-19 vaccine are allowed to take trips during the upcoming holidays. They have urged the people to observe health protocols to prevent another surge in Covid-19 cases.

Iranian envoy says missile strike not against Iraq but Zionist spies

Iran Missile Attack Iraq

Iraj Masjedi said Iran respects Iraq’s sovereignty as well as its people and government. The Iranian diplomat then drew a parallel between this attack and the 2020 missile launch against the Ain al-Assad base that hosted the US troops.

Masjedi said the attack on Ain al-Assad happened after the US assassination of General Qassem Soleimani, Iran’s top commander and the Iraqi government did not object to that strike.

He suggested that the Israeli base in the Kurdistan region is no different as it is threatening Iran’s national security.

Masjedi noted that Iran will not compromise with anyone over its national security and it has made this clear time and time in the past. He urged Iraqi and Kurdistan officials to rid the region of the Zionist elements.

Masjedi reiterated that the Sunday missile strike was not directed against the US nor was it targeting Iraq.

He criticized people who say Iran hit the US consulate, adding it is not that Iran likes the US but this operation had nothing to do with the Americans nor their embassy or consulate.

The IRGC fired nearly a dozen missiles at the Israeli base early on Sunday. Iran says the attack left a number of Zionists dead.

Russia says Iran nuclear talks proceeding normally

Russia Foreign Ministry

“A break was announced in talks on restoring the JCPOA on March 11. The delegations returned to their respective capitals for consultations. Work continues on certain aspects of a future agreement on restoring the nuclear deal, its text is being corrected with regard to issues remaining between the United States and Iran. Some of the participants in the talks will also need to take political decisions on approving the final text of the agreement. The talks are proceeding normally, with no artificial delays to speak of,” the statement reads.

According to the foreign ministry, Russia believes that the path to effectively and fully resuming the implementation of the JCPOA lies through “restoring a balance between the nuclear and economic aspects of the deal, as well as between the relevant interests of all the parties.”

On Friday, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell stated a pause in the Vienna negotiations, aimed at saving the Iran nuclear deal, is needed due to “external factors”.

A senior State Department official has stated the US won’t negotiate exemptions to Ukraine-related sanctions on Russia to save the 2015 Iranian nuclear deal. The source told the Wall Street Journal on Sunday Washington instead would try to strike an alternative agreement that excludes Moscow if the Kremlin doesn’t back off from last-minute demands.

Iran has announced all parties are determined to return to the talks in Vienna on the revival of the 2015 nuclear deal, but it is not clear when that happens. Tehran has stressed it keeps making efforts to reach a good, robust and lasting deal in the Vienna talks.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman stated Monday Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian will pay a visit to Moscow on Tuesday to discuss regional developments and issues concerning the Vienna negotiations.

Saeed Khatibzadeh addressed the issue of excessive demands during the Vienna talks, saying the current “short pause” in the process is meant for the delegations to return to their capitals, which was based on a request by the coordinator of the JCPOA joint commission.

“We are not currently at the point of agreement, because certain key issues remain open, on which decisions should be made in Washington. As soon as those decisions are made, we will be at the point to return to Vienna and get a final agreement. Currently we are waiting to hear the United States’ response,” he added.

“We should not forget what has happened in Vienna means the verifiable return of the US to the JCPOA, and its obligations under the international agreement with commitment,” he stated.

Khatibzadeh noted that the subject of the negotiations has been the United States’ obligations.

Shamkhani: Iranian delegation to remain in Vienna until deal reached

Ali Bagheri Kani

He added that all pillars of the Iran’s Islamic establishment, in spite of all external and internal hype, are working hard to preserve and advance the country’s national interests.

The Vienna talks are said to have hit a snag and word is that this is the reason for the current pause in the negotiations.

Some media reports pin the blame on Russia, saying Moscow is demanding that following a deal, its ties with Iran be not affected by Ukraine-related sanctions on the Kremlin.

But Iranian officials mostly deny this, saying it’s the US that’s at fault because Washington is not ready to remove all sanctions on Tehran.

Nowruz traditions: Goldfish, guests at Haft Seen tables

Along with the Haft Seen – arrangement of seven traditional items, whose names begin with the Persian alphabet letter representing the sound “S” – putting a goldfish in a jar, which is an item of the Haft Seen table, much loved by the younger members of families, has cultural roots.

Since thousands of years ago, goldfish have been an ornament of small ponds in the houses and public pools on the streets, and are also guests at Haft Seen tables of many Iranians. So far, it was thought that goldfish were first farmed in East Asia in such countries as China and Japan.

However, historical artifacts, discovered along the vast boundaries of the Greater Iran and kept in major museums across the world, show that different species of goldfish were known to residents of the Iranian plateau for thousands of years, and contrary to what is often thought, the fish were most probably taken from Iran and Mesopotamia to China.

Iran Newspaper calls for response to any threats from Iraq

Iran Missile

“Officials of Iraq’s Kurdistan Region do not follow the agenda of Baghdad; they rather get orders from the White House. Therefore, officials of Kurdistan Region do not care about the opinions and green lights of the government in Baghdad, as there [in Kurdistan Region], key players are Mossad, CIA and the Pentagon,” Iran Newspaper said in a report on Monday.

The report added that Iraq is one of the most important neighbors of Iran and any threat or infiltration from the Iraqi soil against the Islamic Republic “should be given the necessary response with care and seriousness”.

Still, [when seeing things] in a realistic light, one cannot say that a missile attack on Mossad’s training centers in Erbil can put a halt in the Zionists’ infiltration in Kurdistan Region against the national interests and security of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The comment comes after Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps conducted missile strikes on a strategic Israeli center in the capital of Iraq’s Kurdistan region. The IRGC said its precision-strike missiles hit the center in response to the crimes of the Zionists, in a possible reference to the recent Israeli airstrikes that killed two Iranian military advisors near the Syrian capital Damascus.

Media reports said the target of the IRGC’s strikes were secret centers, run by Mossad and that the attack killed several Mossad operatives.

Nowruz Khani, a tradition marking arrival of spring in Guilan

Nowruz Khan – the singer in the tradition – takes a walking stick and, accompanied by other singers and a number of children and other locals, walks through a route among different neighborhoods, orchards and farmlands in the village.

Upon entry into each new place, the Nowruz Khan takes up new eulogies of the Imams from the infallible household of Prophet Mohammad, and also sings local verses, and congratulates the residents and the households on the arrival of the spring.

Advisor to Iran’s leader condemns Saudi executions as “carnage”

Ali Akbar Velayati

Velayati said in a statement the killings show the true colors of the Saudi regime officials more than ever before and will go down in infamy.

The secretary general of the International Association of Islamic Awakening noted that the perpetrators of this crime are disgraced in the eyes of the freedom-seeking people of the world despite their claims of defending human rights.

The statement criticized the international bodies’ silence toward the mass execution in Saudi Arabia and other crimes committed against people elsewhere in the region including in Palestine, Yemen and Afghanistan.

It said the silence of rights groups and organizations further emboldens the Saudi regime to think they can commit more atrocities with impunity.

Velayati’s statement urged global condemnation of the mass execution in Saudi Arabia, noting that such crimes are orchestrated by arrogant powers with the aim of weakening Muslim countries as this has been admitted on several occasions by leaders of the Western governments and the reactionary Western-backed regimes of the region that were responsible for the creation of terror groups like Daesh.

Saudi Arabia said Saturday it had executed a record 81 people in one day for what it called terrorism-related offences. The figure exceeds the total number of prisoners killed last year
