Mild Quake in Tehran, Alborz Kills 1, Wounds 75

A magnitude 4.2 earthquake in an area between Tehran and Alborz provinces have so far killed a man and injured at least 72 people.

The light earthquake, which took place on early Wednesday at 00:54 (local time), was felt in Alborz and Tehran Provinces and surrounding cities.

The epicentre of the quake has been reported to be on the border between Tehran and Alborz provinces, near the city of Malard. According to initial reports, the magnitude of the seismic event was 4.2 and occurred in the depth of 12 kilometres.

A 58-year-old man has died of heart attack in Karaj, and 75 people have been wounded so far. According to emergency officials, 22 of them have been hospitalized.

The majority of these people were wounded as they were attempting to escape the buildings they were in.

Authorities have shut down all schools in the cities of Shahriar and Malard in Tehran Province as well as Alborz Province following the light earthquake.

The tremor came less than a week after a magnitude 5.2 earthquake hit the same region. The quake caused minor panic in Tehran province, prompting people to take to the streets and public places.
