Researchers Discover New Gene Related to Heart Muscle Diseases

A group of Iranian researchers have, for the first time in the world, discovered a new gene related to diseases of the heart muscle or cardiomyopathy.

The discovery was made by researchers in a hospital in the northeastern Iranian city of Mashhad in cooperation with a university in England.

“Cardiomyopathy refers to a group of diseases of the heart muscle which prevents the heart from pumping enough blood into body organs, causing a heart disorder,” said a senior official in charge of research at the hospital

“’The discovery of this pathogenic gene which is related to hereditary cardiomyopathy was made in collaboration with St. George’s University in England,” said the top researcher.

The researchers managed to make discovery by conducting activities such as biopsies of the muscle and performing structural experiments on the KLHL24 gene.

The important discovery is published in the scientific magazine Human Molecular Genetics.
