Iran Condemns US Legitimization of Illegal Israeli Settlements

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman has condemned remarks by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo who said recently that Israeli settlement construction on Palestinian lands is not in violation of international law.

Seyyed Abbas Mousavi on Thursday said Pompeo’s comments are yet another testament to the United States’ complicity in the occupation of Palestinian territories and the Israeli regime’s crimes in occupied Palestine as well as Israel’s violation of the sovereignty of Palestine’s neighbouring countries.

He said the US officials’ actions and words about Palestine amount to blatant breach of international law, calling on international circles to oppose and counter Washington’s stance.

Mousavi reiterated that Palestinian lands belong to Palestinian people.

“The Zionist regime [of Israel] is a usurper and occupying regime, and the only solution to the Palestine crisis is to hold a referendum among real residents of the Palestinian land,” said the spokesman.

“Pompeo had better extricate himself from thoughts of the 18th century when those in power regarded themselves as being above international law and regulations,” said Mousavi.

“In the 21st century, neither is the US the superior power, nor does anyone accept the violation of international laws by authorities anymore,” he noted.

Mousavi’s remarks came after Pompeo announced that the Trump administration had shifted its policy on the construction of Israeli settlements on Palestinian land and no longer regarded Israeli settlement construction as a breach of international law.
