Rezaei: Ban Ki-moon’s Remarks Confirm UN Bows to Money, Force, Deception

Mohsen Rezayee

“Saudi Arabia’s name has simply been crossed off the list of the violators of children’s rights in Yemen, and then the UN Secretary-General admits that he took the decision for fear of the UN programs’ budget being cut,” wrote Rezaei, also former top commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), on his Instagram page on Saturday June 9.

“The UN Secretary-General clearly admits that the UN has been actually an agent of money, force and deception, and he ridiculously showed the real face of an organization which, one day, was supposed to be a supporter of human beings,” he added.

Rezaei, meantime, said that it is not the first time that the UN has shown double-standards towards a nation, adding that the world body had earlier closed its eyes to the former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein’s chemical attacks against Iran, and the recent killing of Muslim pilgrims in Mina, and had also issued cruel resolutions against Iran in the past.

Ban Ki-Moon announced that Saudi Arabia will be removed, pending investigation, from a blacklist it was on for its role in killing more than 500 children in the Yemen war, prompting speculation of blackmail.

Ban has since as good as confirmed the Saudis subjected him to extortion and condemned them for going too far, while stories have circulated they blackmailed him and threatened to pull funding for a raft of humanitarian programs.

Ban complained of “unacceptable” and “undue pressure” to take the Saudis off a blacklist for killing 510 children — 60% of the children killed last year.

The top story in most newspapers on Saturday was the death of Habib Mohebian, the famous Iranian singer and composer. He was a Los Angeles-based artist for many years, but moved back to Iran a few years ago in the hope that he could resume legal performances in his homeland. However, he was never given the permission to release an album or hold a concert, mainly because of his work in America.

Iranian media also covered a recent statement by the United Nations’ Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, in which he admitted that the UN had removed Saudi Arabia’s name from a blacklist because of Riyadh’s threat of cutting its aid.

French Speaker: Tehran Vital for Regional Peace

Bartolone

“I believe that today, the most urgent priority is fighting terrorism, in which Iran has its role,” ICANA reported him as saying on Thursday. “Without Tehran, the region will not see an enduring peace.”
He made the remarks in a phone conversation with the Majlis [Parliament] Speaker Ali Larijani. Congratulating Larijani on his reelection as chairman of the new legislature, Bartolone said he will soon visit Iran to help prepare the way for closer interaction between the two legislatures.
“The French Parliament is willing to discuss with Iranian official ways to develop bilateral ties, especially in economic spheres, the [global] campaign against terrorism and collaboration between Iran and the European Union to help secure peace and security in West Asia,” the senior French official said.
Larijani said cooperation between the two parliaments will facilitate bilateral relations, which entered a new stage after President Hassan Rouhani visited Paris in January. This was in reference to the high-profile political-economic visit and the economic deals worth $33bn signed between the two sides.
Larijani concluded by saying, “There are major issues regarding the situation in the region which can be discussed during the trip of the French parliamentary delegation to Tehran.”

Iranian Singer Habib Mohebian Passes Away

Habib-mohebian

Zakaria Ashkpour, a spokesman for the emergency center of Mazandaran, told IRNA that the singer-songwriter Habib passed away due to cardiac arrest. He had been living in a village in the vicinity of Ramsar in Mazandaran.

Habib was born in Shemiran, north Tehran, in September 1952. He left Tehran in 1981 and moved to Los Angeles, USA, three years later.

In 2009, Habib sent a letter to the then Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad asking for returning home. Ahmadinejad accepted his request and he returned to Iran.

‘Mard-e Tanha-ye Shab’ (The Lone Man in the Night), ‘Shahla’ and ‘Madar’ (The Mother) were among his most famous songs.

Fars Province Sold $40m Handicrafts Last Year

Rahmani said that tourism and handicrafts are two inseparable items, whereby expanding and developing one of them has a noticeable effect on the other, so that their promotion should take place simultaneously.

One of the ways to promote handicrafts and tourism in the province is to make them a knowledge-based sector, so to make them compatible with domestic and foreign markets.

He added that a centre to promote tourism and handicrafts will be opened in Fars Province Science and Technology Park soon.

Fars province Director General for Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism organization Mosseib Amiri said that handicrafts have a unique capacity in the economic sector, which could be an important way to fulfill the resistance economy and create jobs.

He said that there are currently 120 fields in handicrafts and more than 200,000 artists active in this sector in the province.

A memorandum of cooperation was signed at this gathering between the Hotel Society and Fars CHHTO to create live workshops and exhibitions in four and five star hotels in the province.

Iran to End Domestic AIDS Epidemic By 2030

UN Envoy Khoshroo

Gholamali Khoshroo, Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations at the United Nations High-Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS outlined Iran’s AIDS response programs, said “The Islamic Republic of Iran is one of the relatively few countries in the MENA and the Persian Gulf region which has established a robust surveillance system and provides regularly updated information about the situation of the HIV epidemic and its response.”

He went on to add that the country has successfully implemented an extensive and effective harm reduction program, and has thus been able to control HIV transmission among injecting drug users.

“Iran has recently adopted a national strategy that incorporates the 90-90-90 targets and is designed to end the AIDS epidemic in the country by 2030,” he said.

Iran, Russia and Syria to Use Diplomacy to End Bloodshed

Shamkhani-1

Ali Shamkhani, Iran’s Secretary of Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), made the remarks in a meeting with Syrian Minister of Defense Fahd Jassem al-Freij on the sidelines of Iran-Russia-Syria trilateral meeting on fighting terrorism on Thursday June 9, while hailing the continuing successes of the Syrian army and the people in liberating various parts of the country from terrorist groups.

Shamkhani reaffirmed Iran’s continued support for Syria until the complete eradication of terrorist groups in that country, saying, “Today, Syria is the front line confronting a highly dangerous threat that, if not suppressed, will spread its roots across the world.”

He further deemed the politicized and unconstructive approach of the US and other western and regional allies toward the Syrian crisis a cause for escalation of political and military tensions, adding that “Backing terrorist groups while offering political solutions to resolve the conflict at the same time is a blatant contradiction, which has called the integrity of these countries into question.”

The Syrian Defense Minister, for his part, commended the leadership, government and people of Iran for their all-out support for Syria in the fight against terrorism, saying “The Syrian government and nation will continue their fight against terrorism with unswerving determination.”

He further deemed the trilateral meeting of Iran-Russia-Syria on countering terrorism ‘highly successful’ and ‘decisive’, adding “The close coordination between the three countries at different levels will continue within the framework of new plans for cooperation.”

Caspian Sea Meeting Wraps Up Meeting in Moscow

Caspian Sea

Deputy foreign ministers of the five Caspian Sea littoral states –Iran, Russia, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, and Azerbaijan- wrapped up a 3-day meeting at Russia’s Foreign Ministry on Friday. The working group’s sessions were part of efforts to draft the convention on the legal status of the Caspian Sea.

Iran was represented by Deputy Foreign Minister for Asian and Pacific Affairs Ebrahim Rahimpour in the gathering. The meetings are held periodically in the capital cities of the five littoral states. Astana, capital of Kazakhstan, will host the next meeting in summer.

The Caspian Sea is the largest enclosed water body on earth by surface area, variously classed as the world’s largest lake or a full-fledged sea. The Caspian Sea Convention determines the territorial rights of littoral states as well as other matters related to the world’s largest landlocked body of water.

The Caspian Sea legal regime is based on two agreements signed between Iran and the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) in 1921 and 1940. The three new littoral states, established after the collapse of the Soviet Union, have not recognized the prior treaties, triggering a debate on the future status of the sea.

Iran Bank Joins Euro Payment System

Persia international banl plc
Iran’s Persia International Bank - which is based in London – says it has joined the euro payment system.

IRNA quoted Reza Meskarian, the managing director of Persia International Bank, as saying that his bank has joined euro payment system known as Target-II after undergoing “complicated banking procedures”.  This, Meskarian added, was carried out through the German central bank – Deutsche Bundesbank.

“Persia International Bank belongs to Bank Mellat and Bank Tejarat and it is based in the UK as the first Iranian bank stationed in London with Iranian owners; it managed to join euro payment system known as Target-II after undergoing complicated legal procedures,” he said.

Meskarian further explained that in the international payment cycle (euro zone), the central banks of the euro zone countries are members of Target-II network.

“Other European trade banks do the clearing procedure by connecting to one of Europe’s central banks; it is quite evident that Deutsche Bundesbank is the most powerful and most important central bank of the euro zone in the European Union,” IRNA quoted him as saying.

Reports previously said that despite the January removal of economic sanctions against Iran, global enterprises are still complaining that trade with the country is still difficult as a result of lingering fears of US punitive actions.

Reuters in an exclusive report in March quoted business leaders as saying that a key obstacle which is specifically affecting business with Iran is the unwillingness of international banks to process transactions with the country.
