Understanding the FTSE 100 Index

Established on January 1984, the FTSE 100 Index is just one of the indexes that are operated by the FTSE Group. However, this index is the most widely known of all the others. It started with the base value of 1,000.00 and has grown throughout the years. It is now at the level of 7,000 as of March 2018.

What Is the FTSE Group?

The FTSE Group is a merger between The Financial Times and the London Stock exchange, thus having the acronym FTSE. The FTSE Group is responsible for evaluating the overall performance of the companies that are listed in its indexes. It also monitors bonds that are held as well as given by the companies.

The group handles other FTSE indexes such as the FTSE 250, FTSE 350, FTSE All-Share and the FTSE4Good.

How to Become Listed in the FTSE Index or ASX 200?

Being a listed company, or a ‘constituent’ of the FTSE or ASX has certain requirements. Let’s take the ASX 200 as an example, the companies that are listed in the ASX 200 are checked quarterly.

The reports are usually done on the Wednesday after the first Friday’s of March, June, September and December. Changes in the listed companies that make up the index will then be based on the numbers gathered from the company’s close on the night before.

How Is the Index Calculated?

The FTSE 100 level or its single quoted value you see is calculated from the total market capitalization of the listed companies. Since the share prices change on a daily basis, the quote of the index also changes daily. The index is calculated on every trading day, or every week day (except on public holidays in the UK). It starts from 8:00 am and closes at 1:30 pm.

Persian Architecture in Photos: Tughrul Tower

Tughrul Tower

With an area of 48 square metres and a height of about 20 metres, Tughrul Tower has a brick and clay structure in the form of raised cylinders. Its interior space is cylindrical as well.

The tower contains the tomb of a prominent person whose identity has been subject to many controversies: Some consider him to be Tughrul Bey, the founder of Seljuk dynasty. The famous Turkish historian Faruk Sümer agrees with the idea.

Some others believe the tower is the burial place of Khalil Sultan, a descendent of Timur, and his wife Shad Malik Agha who have died in the 15th century AD.

Muhammad Mohit Tabatabaei, a Persian historian, attributes the building to Ibrahim Khawas, the Persian Sufi of third century AH. Tabatabaei was himself buried next to the tower after his death in 1992.

It is said that Tughrul Tower has been used as a guide for the travellers of Silk Road who came to Rey from Khorasan, by lighting fire on its high rampart during dark nights. The tower also met the chronological needs of people during the day: it functions as a clock, and you can tell the time by watching the sun shine on its knurls.

The building had been abandoned for many years after the Revolution of 1979 in Iran before being rebuilt during the 90s.

What follows are ILNA’s photos of Tughrul Tower, which was registered as a national heritage site in 1931:

Iran’s IRGC Condemns Israel-UAE Deal as ‘Historic Folly’

Anti-Islamism Expediting Fall of US, Zionism: Iran's IRGC

In a statement on Saturday, the IRGC dismissed the deal as a “strategic mistake, a historic folly and a poison-tainted stab in the body of the Islamic community.”

“This action will not only not serve the interests of the Zionist regime [of Israel], but will also … result in a dangerous future awaiting the US and supporters of the agreement,” read the statement.

“The ignominious deal to normalize relations between the UAE and the fabricated Zionist state, which has come to light after being engineered and led by the terrorist and anti-human US government, is one of the biggest historic betrayals against the Quds cause,” the statement read.

“This act of betrayal follows several objectives, namely legitimizing the fabricated Zionist regime [of Israel], undermining the Palestinian resistance front, consigning the issue of Quds and Palestine to oblivion, laying the groundwork for the implementation of the ‘Deal of the Century’ and the ‘New Middle East’ plans, and setting the stage for generalizing the relationship between the Arab world and Zionist occupiers,” said the statement.

“It is a diabolical move doomed to fail, and not only will it not have any achievements for the triangle of the US, the Zionist regime and the Al Saud dynasty, but will, in a reverse equation, give fresh impetus to the trend of the annihilation of the child-killing Zionist regime and the restoration of Palestinians’ legitimate rights,” read the statement, adding that the deal will trigger the Muslim world’s hatred of UAE leaders.

UN Refusal to Vote for Anti-Iran Resolution ‘Humiliating Defeat’ for US: Rouhani

UN Refusal to Vote for Anti-Iran Resolution ‘Humiliating Defeat’ for US

President Hassan Rouhani said the development amounts to a triumph for Iran.

“We witnessed a great success at the United Nations Security Council. It was the first time that a US-drafted resolution at the UN Security Council received a yes vote from only one country, a small island nation,” said the president.

“The US had been making preparations for months to deal a blow to the Islamic Republic of Iran, and proposed a resolution which finally received the approval of the Dominican Republic only,” President Rouhani added.

He said ten countries abstained and two voted against because they all knew that the maintenance of the Iran nuclear deal would be in the interest of the region and the whole world.

He also rejected Washington’s claim that it had seized several Iranian oil tankers in international waters, saying the ships were neither Iranian-flagged nor owned by the country.

The president said the claim was a lie aimed at covering up the US humiliating defeat at the UN.

The 15-memebr UN Security Council rejected the US bid to extend an arms embargo on Iran. Russia and China voted against the move while Britain, France, Germany and eight other members abstained.

The US and the Dominican Republic were the only countries to vote for the draft resolution.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Rouhani fulminated against the United Arab Emirates for reaching an agreement with the Israeli regime that will normalize relations between them.

He said the move is aimed at pleasing White House leaders, adding UAE leaders are making a mistake by aligning themselves with the US in order to ensure their security.

He said the UAE’s move amounts to a betrayal of the cause of Palestine and Palestinian people.

The president warned Abu Dhabi against paving the way for Israel to gain a foothold in the region.

President Rouhani also hit out at Israel for expanding Jewish settlements, planning to annex parts of Palestine and pressing ahead with its crimes against Palestinians.

He reiterated that Iran always been a source of security in the region and helped neighbouring countries maintain their security.

Zarif Decries Israel-UAE Deal to Normalize Ties

Zarif Decries Israel-UAE Deal to Normalize Ties

In a Friday phone call with Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the political bureau of the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif condemned the deal and reiterated Tehran’s perennial support for the cause of Palestine.

Haniyeh, in turn, expressed his gratitude to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei as well as the Iranian nation and government for backing the cause of Palestine.

He said “we as Palestine” will move forward with resistance and fighting occupation and will not be swayed by such acts of betrayal.

However, he said, Palestinians feel the pain caused by this “backstabbing.”

Earlier in the day, Zarif condemned the “regrettable” deal in a meeting with Ziyad al-Nakhalah, the secretary general of the Islamic Jihad Movement, in Beirut.

“We are confident that this move, which is an act of betrayal, will have no bearing on the resistance of Palestinian people and the movement of the resistance front, and is sure to fuel regional nations and Palestinian people’s hatred of such policies against the cause of Palestine,” he said.

Al-Nakhalah, in turn, appreciated Iran’s constant support for the cause of Palestine, saying the vicious UAE-Israel deal will not affect Palestinian people’s resistance.

Israel and the UAE reached a deal on Thursday that will lead to full normalization of diplomatic relations between the two sides.

The deal came after a phone call between United States President Donald Trump, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the crown prince of Abu Dhabi.

Trump hailed the deal as a “huge breakthrough” and a “historic peace agreement between” its “two great friends”.

“This deal is a significant step towards building a more peaceful, secure and prosperous Middle East (West Asia),” Trump told reporters in a hastily arranged event in the Oval Office.

“Now that the ice has been broken, I expect more Arab and Muslim countries will follow the United Arab Emirates’ lead,” he said.

Iran Hails UNSC for Saying No to US’ Unilateralism

Iran Urges Saudi Arabia, Israel to Come Clean on Nuclear Activities

Iran’s Ambassador to the UN Majid Takht Ravanchi said all countries, especially members of the UN Security Council, are duty-bound to make every effort to uphold values, objectives and principles stipulated in the UN Charter.

The Security Council on Friday gave a “No” vote to a US-drafted anti-Iran resolution.

“Appeasement has never served the common interests of humanity; on the contrary, it has only emboldened bullies,” he said.

“We are beholden to ourselves and the future generation, which will have to live with the consequences of our actions or inaction,” he said.

His comments came after the Security Council rejected the US resolution to extend an arms embargo on Iran that is due to expire in October.

Only one member state voted in favour of the US resolution, and all other members either rejected the resolution or abstained from voting.
