Domestic vaccine to be used as booster shot for Covid: Iran health minister

Noora COVID Vaccine

“Based on scientific research and articles, Noora is one of the domestically-produced vaccines which have no side effects, and we hope it will be distributed in the country soon, especially now when we are going through the seventh peak of the coronavirus disease,” said Bahram Einollahi.

“We recommend people go to vaccination centers and get booster shots,” he said.

The minister touched upon the rise in the number of Covid deaths recently, adding infections and hospitalizations have been on the rise in recent weeks.

“Under the current circumstances, it is not unlikely for fatality figures to rise,” said the health minister.

“We are now two to three weeks into the seventh wave of the coronavirus disease as the death toll from coronavirus has risen to two-digit figures,” said the minister.

“With the completion of the vaccination program and compliance with health protocols, we hope to see a drop in the daily deaths from Covid,” he explained.

The Iranian Food and Drug Organization has issued the permit to use the Noora vaccine as a booster shot for other types of Covid vaccines

Pentagon says has not observed Russia use Iranian drones in Ukraine yet

Pentagon

The official told reporters on Friday afternoon that no Iranian UAVs had been spotted in Ukraine yet, days after National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan informed reporters about intelligence indicating such a plan was in motion.

“I haven’t seen any indication they are,” the official explained, adding, “Man, it says a lot that the Russians are leaning on Iran to get weapons.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian did not confirm US claim that Tehran is providing Russia with military equipment, including unmanned aerial vehicles. He assured that Tehran avoids any steps that may result in an escalation in Ukraine conflict.

“We have various forms of cooperation with Russia, including in the sphere of defense, but we are not helping either side involved in the [Ukrainian] conflict because we are certain that it should be concluded. I think that currently the problem is elsewhere – some Western countries, including the US, are manufacturing arms and trying to sell their products,” Amirabdollahian said in his interview with La Repubblica newspaper, commenting on remarks by US Presidential National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan on Iran’s plans to send drones to Russia.

“We are trying to avoid any actions that may lead to an escalation. We are working on stopping this war,” the Iranian top diplomat added.

He stressed that that Tehran “will avoid any action that could lead to escalation” but we will work to stop the conflict.

Analyst: US creating rifts within Taliban to facilitate Daesh infiltration

Taliban

In an interview with ILNA, Mohammad Hashem Esmatollahi, a senior analyst of Afghanistan affairs, said although US forces have pulled out of Afghanistan, the CIA and other US security and intelligence agencies are pulling the strings to disrupt security in the country.

The remarks by Esmatollahi came days after the Taliban’s acting defense minister Mullah Yaqoob expressed dissatisfaction over the cracks within the group and the removal of the Taliban flag in Khost district of Baghlan Province.

Dismissing claims that the Taliban and Daesh could have forged an alliance behind the scenes, the Iranian analyst said Daesh is being reinforced by the US in an objective and engineered way to deteriorate the security and political situation in the country.

He added the Taliban need to be aware that Afghanistan’s neighboring countries do not pose a threat against the country.

Afghanistan has been facing a plethora of challenges since the chaotic withdrawal of US-led troops from the country last year. The cash-strapped country is on the verge of a humanitarian disaster as the US has frozen billions of dollars of the Afghan assets.

China says to keep up cooperation with Iran despite US sanctions

Chinese Ambassador to Iran Chang Hua

In an interview with Iran’s Mehr News Agency, Ambassador Chang Hua said China has constantly voiced its opposition to America’s “unlawful, unwise and unilateral” sanctions and its approach of intervention in the affairs of others.

He called on Washington to stop its instrumental use of sanctions and begin instead to play a positive role in the talks aimed at reviving the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, which the US abandoned three years after its signing.

The US restored its anti-Iran sanctions, which are designed to cripple the Iranian economy, after its withdrawal from the multilateral deal in 2018.

“The international community, including China, will maintain their normal cooperation with Iran within the framework of international law” anyway, he said.

“This is a logical and lawful approach which does no harm to any third party and should thus be respected and supported.”

The senior diplomat also praised close economic cooperation between Tehran and Beijing as “practical” and “fruitful.”

Also reacting to Iran’s formal request to join the BRICS group of emerging economic powers, he said China supports the expansion of the five-nation bloc, which also includes Brazil, Russia, India and South Africa.

“Iran is an important country in the Middle East and one of the significant developing countries [of the world]. In recent years, the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Iran has been developed and mutual trust between the parties has been consolidated continuously,” he said.

Chang was referring the 25-year agreement signed between Iran and China last year.

Iran sounds alarm over rising number of Covid cases, deaths

COVID in Iran

“There is an upward trend in the number of coronavirus infections,” said Abbas Shirvajan, the spokesperson for the task force.

“This week, the number of hospitalizations due to coronavirus infection has risen 2.5 times, and the number of weekly deaths is up 40 percent,” he noted.

“The trend is likely to grow,” he explained.

“It has been two weeks that we have seen a rise in the number of cases as well as Covid patients receiving outpatient or inpatient treatment in hospitals,” said the spokesman.

He said the number of cities marked “red” has increased.

The “red” color indicates the most serious level of Covid infection in Iran.

The spokesman highlighted the need to be prepared to tackle the new wave of the disease.
“We hope this rise is not as much as the previous waves,” he said.

He also touched upon the high number of coronavirus patients in Europe and the United States.

“It is predicted that the [new] wave [of the disease] will reach its peak in the coming weeks after which we will see a drop in the number of infections and hospitalizations,” he added.

Following weeks of retreat that saw Corona zero-deaths, the Iranian health ministry announced on Friday that 141,477 people had died of the Coronavirus so far in the country.

Iran denounces UN rapporteur’s support for verdict against Hamid Nouri

Kazem Gharib Abadi

Kazem Gharibabadi, who is also the Iranian judiciary deputy head for international affairs, said in a tweet, “It is extremely disappointing that Javid Rehman has chosen to publicly support arbitrary detention and sham trial of an Iranian citizen instead of calling out the Swedish authorities and holding them to account for the gross violations of fundamental human rights of the victim.”

Hamid Nouri, a former Iranian judiciary official, was arrested upon arrival at the Stockholm Airport in November 2019 and was handed a life sentence by a Swedish court on Thursday for allegedly having a role in the execution of jailed dissidents in the 1980s in Iran.

The UN rapporteur hailed the conviction in a statement on Friday, saying, “The process and verdict in Sweden constitute a landmark and important leap forward in the pursuit of truth and justice.”

In reaction, Gharibabadi said the UN rapporteur’s stance was “yet another indication of his inherent inclination to use his UK-sponsored mandate for a self-aggrandizing campaign to please Iran’s adversaries at the cost of sacrificing the basic principles of human rights.”

Iran has rejected the Swedish court’s verdict as “unacceptable”, saying it is based on unfounded allegations made by the MEK terrorist group.

Oscar-winning director Farhadi to get “Maestri del Cinema” award in Fiesole

Asghar Farhadi

The honor will be presented to Farhadi during a ceremony at the Teatro Romano di Fiesole on Saturday evening, followed by a screening of the director’s Oscar-winning drama “A Separation.”

Meanwhile, a book written by Italian scholar Simone Emiliani about the renowned director, titled “Le Verità Nascoste: Il Cinema di Asghar Farhadi” (“The Hidden Truths: Asghar Farhadi’s cinema”), will be introduced during the ceremony.

“I am happy to present the 2022 edition of the Fiesole Prize to the Masters of Cinema, which represents a milestone in the history of our event,” said Anna Ravoni, the mayor of Fiesole, in June, when the winner was first announced.

“In fact, with the exception of Akira Kurosawa in 1986, the Masters who have been on the stage of the Roman Theater of Fiesole up until now have all been either European or American. This year the Prize wanted to broaden its gaze, opening up to the Middle East and we can only be proud of this,” she added.

Over the past days, Florence has been paying tribute to the great Iranian filmmaker with a retrospective of his work in the Piazzale degli Uffizi, a historical square in the center of the city, where some of his works are screened for the public

Biden says he raised Khashoggi murder with MbS

Biden Bin Salman

“I raised it at the top of the meeting, making it clear what I thought of it at the time and what I think of it now,” Biden said in a speech after hours of meetings with the Saudi crown prince and other Saudi officials in Jeddah.

“I said, very straightforwardly, for an American president to be silent on the issue of human rights is inconsistent with who we are and who I am,” Biden continued, adding, “I’ll always stand up for our values.”

Peppered with questions from reporters about the exchange, Biden later stated that the Saudi crown prince told him he was not “personally responsible” for Khashoggi’s murder.

“I indicated I thought he was,” Biden said, adding, “He said he was not personally responsible for it, and he took action against those who were responsible.”

Biden received criticism earlier on Friday when he was photographed fist bumping the Saudi crown prince, who the US intelligence community concluded approved Khashoggi’s 2018 murder.

Fred Ryan, publisher and CEO of The Washington Post, where Khashoggi worked, called the fist bump “shameful” in a statement Friday afternoon and said it would give the Saudi crown prince “the unwarranted redemption he has been desperately seeking.”

There were questions leading up to Friday’s meeting about whether and how Biden would raise Khashoggi’s killing. The meeting with Saudi leaders largely took place behind closed doors at Al Salam Royal Palace.

Biden also withstood a torrent of criticism leading up to Friday’s meeting. He was accused of reversing on his campaign pledge to make Saudi Arabia a “pariah” on the world stage due to Khashoggi’s murder.

On Friday, Biden told reporters that he did not regret his language then.

“I don’t regret anything that I said,” Biden said, replying to a reporter’s question.

“What happened to Khashoggi was outrageous,” he noted.

Biden also defended the decision to visit Saudi Arabia, which was the second stop on a broader trip to the Middle East.

Biden highlighted progress in moving relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel toward normalization and stated the US and Saudi Arabia agreed to partner on a “far-reaching” green energy initiative.

Biden also expressed optimism that Saudi Arabia would take steps to boost the global oil supply in the coming weeks, which had been viewed as a major goal of the trip given high domestic gas prices and the disruption of the global energy market caused by Russia’s war in Ukraine.

The trip to the Middle East, Biden said, was about reasserting US leadership in the region at a time when China and Russia are trying to expand their influence and challenge global order.

“We are not going to leave a vacuum in the Middle East for Russia or China to fill, and we’re getting results,” Biden added.

More coronavirus-hit cities in Iran creeping into red zone

COVID in Iran

Based on a color-coded system showing the severity of Covid-19 outbreak in different regions, as of Saturday 15 cities in Iran are marked red and 35 cities are orange which means the situation is at alarming levels.

The ministry also said 208 cities are registered as yellow, which indicates a moderate level severity on the scale.

Iran managed to keep the coronavirus in check for months before the caseloads and fatalities surge again in recent weeks, dashing hopes among people that the pandemic was over.

The daily death toll in Iran has become double-digit again, with the health ministry saying on Friday 13 people died of the disease in the past 24 hours.

The health ministry figures also showed that 4,772 people had tested positive for Covid from Thursday to Friday.

Iranian Health Minister Bahram Einollahi said on Friday the 7th wave of Covid has started in the country.

Authorities say the only way to contain the rising number of new infections is for people to get their booster shots and wear masks
