Iranian president urges efforts to streamline border trade

Iran President Ebrahim Raisi

Speaking at the coordination session of the three branches of government, President Raisi also said border trade must be streamlined.

The president, the parliament speaker and the Judiciary chief then proposed and approved the formation of a taskforce to fight good and foreign currency smuggling.

The proposal is aimed at streamlining good smuggling by human porters and fighting its social, human and economic harms.

At the meeting, President Raisi called for making border trade healthy and for supporting legal activities and fighting the social and economic impact of illicit transportation of goods.

President Raisi, Parliament Speaker Mohamamd Bagher Ghalibaf and Judiciary Chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ezhei also put on agenda the issue of improving the situation at the Haft Tappeh sugarcane factory in southern Iran.

Workers at the factory have repeatedly complained about working conditions there.

Son of jailed Iranian says Sweden cut father’s cantacts with family

Hamid Nouri

Majid Nouri added that he and other members of the family sent an email to the judge in charge of the case and told him that they were yet to be allowed to meet Hamid Nouri despite the court’s announcement that restriction on the Iranian national were lifted.

Majid Nouri cited the judge as saying that he was sad about the matter and that he would get in touch with higher authorities. According to Hamid Nouri’s son, despite this, the situation of his father did not change.

He added that his father is deprived of medical services and that he had been beaten one day after an indictment was issued against him.

Majid Nouri underscored that the court in Stockholm did not have any substantiated proof against his father.

The Swedish court has given Hamid Nouri life imprisonment over alleged rights violations against the members of the Mojahedin-e-Khalq terror organization in the 1980s.

Iran has rejected the verfict as political saying it was issued based on the testimonies of the MKO terror group only.

The Mojahedin-e-Khalq group is responsible for killing thousands of ordinary people in terror attacks in Iran after the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Biden disputes Saudi official’s account of meeting with MbS

Biden and Bin Salman

Biden was referring to comments made by Adel al-Jubeir, who told Fox News he did not “hear” the US president tell MbS that he directly blamed him for the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi during their discussion in Jeddah on Friday.

“I didn’t hear that particular phrase,” al-Jubeir told Fox News correspondent Alex Hogan in an interview on Saturday.

“The president mentioned that the US is committed to human rights because since the founding fathers wrote the constitution and he also made the point that American presidents – this is part of the agenda of every American president,” he added.

Upon returning to the White House early on Sunday after his four-day Middle East trip, Biden was asked by reporters if al-Jubeir was telling the truth in recounting his exchange with MbS. Biden pointedly replied: “No.”

Biden, who visited Saudi Arabia, Israel and the occupied West Bank in his first trip to the region as US president, previously told reporters he brought up Khashoggi’s killing at the top of his initial meeting with the Saudi crown prince.

He said he “indicated” to MbS that he held him “personally responsible” for the 2018 killing. He added that MbS repeatedly denied responsibility during their meeting.

Al-Jubeir, in an earlier interview with the Reuters news agency, stated Biden “raised the issue … and the crown prince responded that this was a painful episode for Saudi Arabia and that it was a terrible mistake”.

The Saudi minister added that Riyadh has taken steps to prevent similar mistakes in the future, while maintaining the long-held stance that the killing was a rogue operation that took place without the knowledge of MbS or any top officials.

The US intelligence community has concluded that MbS had “approved an operation” to capture or kill Khashoggi prior to his murder in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

The latest back-and-forth underscores the continued complexity of Biden’s decision to visit Saudi Arabia, a country he had promised to isolate in the wake of Khashoggi’s killing. That was before rising inflation and sky-high domestic fuel prices, spurred by the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February, pushed Washington closer to leading oil-producing allies such as Riyadh.

On Saturday, MbS noted the kingdom would increase per day oil production from 11 million barrels to 13 million, “after which the kingdom will not have any additional capacity to increase production”.

That came as Washington and Riyadh, in a joint statement, pledged to help stabilise global energy markets.

The Biden administration has maintained the trip’s main focus was not oil prices, but to reassure allies that Washington has not turned away from the region and will not leave a power vacuum for Russia, China or Iran.

It has also emphasised the trip was meant to support steps towards normalising relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel, which included Riyadh opening its airspace to all civilian carriers, including flights to and from Israel, on Friday.

Still, it remained unclear if the modest gains and agreements reached between Washington and Riyadh would allay criticism that the visit represents a backslide for human rights in the US foreign policy.

Biden continues to face a chorus of criticism for fist-bumping MbS upon arriving in Jeddah, with Washington Post publisher Fred Ryan saying the gesture “gave MbS the unwarranted redemption he has been desperately seeking”.

When asked by reporters on Sunday if he regretted the greeting, Biden responded: “Why don’t you guys talk about something that matters? I am happy to answer a question that matters.”

Expert: Connecting Iraq to Saudi electricity network aimed at distancing it from Iran

Iraq electricity network

Mahmoud al-Hashemi told IRNA that US President Joe Biden, in his recent visit to the Middle East, raised the issue of connecting Iraq to the Saudi electricity grid to show the Washington has the upper hand.

He described Biden’s move as undiplomatic and meddlesome.

The expert noted previously, the [Persian] Gulf Cooperation Council (PGCC) and Iraq signed an agreement to build two power transmission lines that were supposed to be 300 kilometers long.

Hashemi added that part of the power lines is in Kuwait and the other part is in Iraq for the purpose of transmitting only 500 megawatts of electricity to Iraq.

According to the director of the Iraqi think tank, Iraq’s ministry of electricity has implemented the bulk of the project but it has yet to connect the country to Saudi Arabia through Arar and al-Yousefieh regions.

Hashemi however underlined that Saudi Arabia itself suffers from electricity shortages in its southern regions where electricity prices are very high.

Skočić retains post as manager of Iran national football team

Dragan Skočić

The decision was made at a meeting of the members of the presiding board and the technical committee of Iran’s Football Federation.

Thus, Skočić will lead Team Melli in the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar. Previously, there was talk of him being removed with some reports speculating that several Iranian and foreign candidates could replace Skočić.

But the Croat managed to convince the presiding board of the Iranian football federation to continue cooperation with him.

Iran has been paired with England, the US and Wales in Group B of the World Cup finals.

Iran top rights official: UK risking life of jailed Iranian national

Kazem Gharibabadi

Kazem Gharibabadi said Britain has been refusing to repatriate Iranian national Richard John, who has been in prison in the country for nearly 20 years.

“Mr. John does not have access to proper conditions in jail and is deprived of medical and health care. Our country’s foreign ministry has repeatedly called for his repatriation to Iran, but unfortunately Britain has done nothing in this regard,” he said.

Gharibabadi explained that John, who is a Christian and a dual Iranian-British national, had waived his British nationality to be deported to Iran.

Gharibabadi said Britain rejected his deportation, however, under the pretext that it will risk British lives.

“It is now Britain that is endangering the life of an Iranian,” the official said.

He called on Britain to fulfill its human rights obligations and repatriate the Iranian national as soon as possible.

Putin’s Iran visit has nothing to do with Biden’s tour of region: Iran MP

Russian President Vladimir Putin

Abolfazl Amooi noted, “As far as I know, Putin’s trip has been planned before and has nothing to do with the recent developments.”

“It is completely clear that we don’t have a positive assessment of the presence of extra-regional powers in the region,” said Amooi, who is the spokesperson for the Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee.

“Countries such as the United States have, so far, been a source of insecurity for our region and have not been able to bring security to our region,” the lawmaker explained.

The legislator noted regional security should be ensured by countries in the region, adding Washington’s support for Tel Aviv has further fueled regional insecurity.

He then described Putin’s upcoming visit to Iran as important, saying Tehran and Moscow have reached a point where they are trying to promote their mutual relations.
