Report: Syria FM due in Tehran on Tuesday for talks over regional issues

Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mikdad

Syria’s Al-Watan Newspaper quoted an unnamed Syrian official as confirming the report.
The visit comes as the Russian and Turkish presidents are visiting Iran as part of the Astana peace talks over the Syria crisis.

The latest developments in northern Syria top the agenda of talks between the presidents of Iran, Russia and Turkey.

Turkey has threatened to invade the Kurdish forces in northern Syria.

Mikdad is going to meet with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amirabdollahian in Tehran for talks about bilateral ties and the results of the three-way peace negotiations.

Russian President and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan will shortly arrive in Tehran to participate in the Astana peace talks. The negotiations aim to restore stability to Syria.

Iran and Russia support the Syrian government and Turkey backs the opposition in the Syria crisis.

“Iran-Russia trade grew by over 81 percent in 2021”

Iran Trade

Hadi Tizhoush said correct implementation of the financial and banking memorandum of understanding between Moscow and Tehran will facilitate the exchange of trade figures.

Tizhoush also referred to the Russian president’s extension of preferred trade with Eurasian countries, saying such moves can pave the way for increased trade between the two sides and leave a positive impact on the volume of trade between Iran and the Russian Federation too.

He however noted there is a need to change in the view about exports in order to transform on-oil exports.

The chairman of the Iran-Russia chamber of commerce blamed sanctions on Iran’s banking sector for lack of expected growth in trade.

Tizhoush said the removal of this obstacle can create a favorable condition for importers and exporters.

Kremlin: Russia and Iran to ditch dollar in trades

Dollar

Peskov addressed President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Iran, stating that Moscow and Tehran are reliable friends and partners.

He also stressed that the two nations will gradually abandon the practice of using US dollars to assess the scope of bilateral trade.

“We all know that trade and economic relations between the two countries slightly exceeded four billion US dollars last year, although it may be wrong to count it in US dollars, and over time, we will probably move away from this practice as we develop our cooperation in the banking financial sector,” Peskov told the Iranian state broadcaster in an interview, which was also aired by Rossiya 24 TV.

The official also noted that net trade between Russia and Iran grew 31 percent just over the last few months, adding that the trend is positive.

According to him, Russia and Iran have an opportunity to build cooperation to mitigate the effect of sanctions.

Iran has been under sanctions for more than a decade and has adapted well to developing and improving the well-being of its people, despite the restrictions, the official said, noting that Russia is also accustomed to sanctions.

“I think that we have an opportunity to build bilateral cooperation that will allow us to minimize the damage from these bilateral sanctions,” Peskov continued.

Peskov also expressed hope that a cooperation agreement will be signed shortly after some amendments are approved.

“We hope [the deal will be signed] soon (…) after some additional changes are made and agreed upon, taking into account the opinion of the Iranian side. It will be possible to sign the deal fairly quickly and in the near future,” he concluded.

Amid his visit to the Islamic Republic, President Putin is expected to meet his Iranian counterpart Ebrahim Raisi, as well as Supreme Leader of Iran Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei. He will also hold talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to negotiate most pressing issues, Kremlin spokesman continued.

Former Iranian rights chief Larijani says US policies outdated

Mohammad Javad Larijani

Mohammad Javad Larijani also referred to US president Joe Biden’s visit to occupied Palestine, saying the US and the Zionist regime vowed during the trip that they will not let Iran acquire nukes.

He added that if Iran wants to build nuclear arms, nobody can stop the country.

He was echoing remarks by former Iranian foreign minister Kamal Kharrazi.

Larijani further pointed to a fatwa (religious decree) issued by the leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution that bans the production and stockpiling of nuclear weapons.

He suggested that the US policies are outdated and are “just as Joe Biden’s age.”

Larijani noted that the US policies are ineffective in the face of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Iran envoy welcomes meeting between Azeri-Armenian FMs

Ararat Mirzoyan and Jeyhun Bayramov

“The I.R. of Iran supports any process/initiative that leads to lasting peace, stability and security in the region. Bilateral talks and intra-regional dialogues ( 3+3 Mechanism / Iran-Russia-Turkey+Azerbaijan-Armenia-Georgia) are the best for a long-term stability and cooperation in the South Caucasus,” Mousavi said.

The foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan met in Georgia for their first bilateral meeting since 2020 when thousands died in a conflict over control of Nagorno-Karabakh, Euro News reported.

The meeting between Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and his Azerbaijani counterpart Jeyhun Bayramov in Tbilisi comes months after Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan met in Brussels.

The pair met to “advance discussions” on a peace treaty between the countries.

Russian diplomat amid media storm: Iran has openly rejected nukes

Iran Nuclear Program

“To be precise, #Iran produces uranium enriched to 60 % for a long time already in response to the #US maximum pressure policy started by Trump and continued by Biden. But the highest Iranian authorities clearly stated long ago that Tehran rules out production of nuclear weapons,” Mikhail Ulyanov said in a tweet.

He was responding to a media storm around the comments by the director of Iran’s Strategic Council on Foreign Relations who told al-Jazeera on Sunday that Iran is “capable of” making a nuclear bomb “but does not intend to do so”.

“Capable does not mean willing or planning,” Ulyanov said.

He added that the current situation with the nuclear program of Iran is “the product of maximum pressure policy of Trump/Biden”.

Iran has time and again said it has no intention to produce nuclear weapons or any other weapons of mass destruction.

Analyst: Any German misstep could send Europe into black hole

Scholz and Merkel

Abdolreza Faraji Rad, Iran’s former ambassador in Norway, in an interview with ILNA, said, “From the beginning of the Ukraine conflict, it was obvious that the Europeans would be the main losers, because they rely on Russia in terms of energy and economy, and that Germany used to get gas from Russia through the Nord Stream pipeline.”

He added, “The bitter reality is German people, who are considered hardworking people, but are now worried about the energy issue in their country and it is even likely that some of them will be unemployed in the coming months due to the economic woes.”

Faraji Rad said any increase in fuel including gasoline prices would lead to the fall in German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s popularity rate in Germany or the collapse of the government.

Ha added Scholz’s predecessor, Angela Merkel, could have steered Europe through the current turbulence more smoothly.

The senior analyst also noted that tougher days are ahead for Europe due to the cold spells in the winter and the disruption in Russian gas supplies, stressing the German chancellor needs to take an initiative to stop the war or the tremors will be felt across Europe.

Russia launched a devastating war on Ukraine on February 24 after warning that the United States was using Ukraine to threaten Moscow through the NATO military alliance.

Moscoe has threatened to cut gas supplies to Europe, raising the alarm over deadly consequences in winter.
