Live Update: Russia’s “Special Operation” in Ukraine; Day 193

Russia Ukraine War

Despite energy crisis, Germany ‘will get through winter’: Chancellor

Germany would have sufficient energy to see it through to next year, Chancellor Olaf Scholz said after Russia stopped supplies of gas to Europe via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline.

The government had made “timely decisions” to avoid a winter crisis, Scholz said, including filling gas stores and restarting coal power plants.

“We will get through this winter,” the chancellor added.

Germany’s government will use income from windfall taxes to lower end-consumer prices for gas, oil and coal, he stated.

Scholz noted the government plans to tie certain social benefits to the current or expected inflation rate in the future and will earmark 1.5 billion euros ($1.49 billion) for a discounted public transportation offer.

The German government has agreed to a 65-billion-euro ($65bn) plan to ease the pressure on households as Russian gas supplies dwindle and energy bills soar, according to a policy paper seen by the AFP news agency.

“Timely and proportionate relief for citizens and businesses is necessary due to the rapidly increasing burden of high energy prices,” Germany’s coalition partners said in the document, adding that the total package came to “over 65 billion euros”.

The measures include a one-off payment of 300 euros to millions of pensioners to help them cover rising energy bills.

The government will also target students with a smaller one-off payment of 200 euros, and a heating cost payment for people receiving housing benefits.

Battle to retake Kherson likely to last months: Officer

Taras Berezovets, a special forces officer from the Ukraine military, said the counterattack to retake the city Kherson will likely take months as equipment and logistics are readied.

“I would characterize our offensive as smooth but effective. Our armed forces are thinking first about the lives of our servicemen and the lives of our civilians. We’re not going to go any further if there is a serious risk,” Berezovets told Al Jazeera.

“Ukrainian forces are not only going to liberate Kherson region but all occupied territories. It doesn’t matter how long it will take. The Russian soldiers are demoralized, they don’t know what they’re doing on Ukrainian soil,” Berezovets added.

Ukraine counterattack ‘systemically grind’ down Russian military

The counteroffensive in southern Ukraine is a methodical operation aiming to degrade Russian forces and logistics, rather than one aimed at immediately recapturing large swathes of territory, Ukrainian presidential adviser Oleksiy Arestovych told the Wall Street Journal.

The goal is the “systemic grinding of Putin’s army and that Ukrainian troops are slowly and systematically uncovering and destroying Russia’s operational logistical supply system with artillery and precision weapon strikes”, he stated.

The counteroffensive will likely not result in immediate gains as Ukraine forces seek to “disrupt key logistics nodes that support Russian operations in the south and chip away at Russian military capabilities”, according to an assessment by the Institute of the Study of War.

Zelensky: Russia using “poverty and political chaos” to attack lives of all Europeans

President Volodymyr Zelensky has said Russia is using “poverty and political chaos” to attack the lives of all Europeans.

He stated that by stopping the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, Russia wanted to” destroy the normal life of every European.”

Russia’s state energy firm Gazprom announced on Saturday that the pipeline could be closed indefinitely.

“Russia is trying to increase the energy pressure on Europe even more – gas pumping through the Nord Stream pipeline has completely stopped. Why do they do this? Russia wants to destroy the normal life of every European – in all countries of our continent. It wants to weaken and intimidate the entire Europe, every state,” the president noted.

“Where Russia cannot do it by force of conventional weapons, it does so by force of energy weapons. It is trying to attack with poverty and political chaos where it cannot yet attack with missiles,” he continued.

“And to protect against this, we all in Europe need even more unity, even more coordination, even more help to each other,” Zelensky added.

“This winter, Russia is preparing for a decisive energy attack on all Europeans. And the key answers to this should be two things: first, our unity – unity in protection against the terrorist state, and second – Increasing our own pressure on Russia – this includes increasing sanctions at all levels, and limiting Russia’s oil and gas revenues,” the Ukrainian leader stated.

Ukraine claims Russia has lost 50k troops

Ukraine’s armed forces have given their latest official estimate of Russian losses in the war so far.

They say 49,500 Russian troops have lost their lives since February but these figures are not possible to verify.

‘Morale and discipline issues’ hitting Russian troops: UK

Russian forces are suffering from “morale and discipline issues” in addition to combat fatigue and high casualties, the UK Ministry of Defence says.

A main grievance from troops probably continued to be around pay, including the high chance that “sizeable combat bonuses” were not being paid, the latest British intelligence update announced.

At least some “outright corruption” among commanders was probably involved, as well as an “inefficient military bureaucracy”, it noted.

“The Russian military has consistently failed to provide basic entitlements to troops deployed in Ukraine, including appropriate uniform, arms and rations as well as pay. This has almost certainly contributed to the continued fragile morale of much of the force,” it added.

Ukraine’s nuclear plant partly offline: IAEA

The head of the United Nations nuclear watchdog has said the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in Ukraine was disconnected to its last external power line but was still able to run electricity through a reserve line after sustained shelling in the area.

International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Grossi stated in a statement that the agency’s experts, who remained in Zaporizhzhia after arriving for an inspection on Thursday, were told by senior Ukrainian staff that the fourth and last operational line was down. The three others were lost earlier during the conflict.

The IAEA experts learned that the reserve line linking the facility to a nearby thermal power plant was delivering the electricity the plant generates to the external grid, the statement read. The same reserve line can also provide backup power to the plant if needed, it added.

Russian-backed authorities earlier noted the plant had been knocked offline.

‘Russia has put the world in danger’: EU Council president

The president of the European Council has paid tribute to the International Atomic Energy Agency’s “courage and professionalism” following a visit by its inspectors to the Zaporizhzhia plant in Ukraine, adding that their continued presence was “necessary” to ensure safety.

“Russia has put the word in danger,” Charles Michel said on Twitter.

Europe’s largest nuclear plant was occupied by Russia soon after it invaded Ukraine in February. Ukrainian staff who continue to operate the site say Russian troops have used it as a military base.

Michel added he spoke to the head of the UN nuclear agency, Rafael Grossi, following the long-awaited visit on Thursday. Several inspectors from the 14-member mission have remained on site.

EU ready if Russia turns off gas supplies: Economy commissioner

EU Economy Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni has said the EU is “well prepared” in the event of a total halt in Russian gas deliveries, thanks to storage capacity and energy-saving measures.

“We are well prepared to resist Russia’s extreme use of the gas weapon,” he told reporters on the sidelines of an economic forum organised by The European House – Ambrosetti.

“We are not afraid of Putin’s decisions, we are asking the Russians to respect contracts, but if they don’t, we are ready to react,” he added.

Russian gas giant Gazprom said on Friday that the Nord Stream pipeline linking Russia to northern Germany, which was due to resume service Saturday after a three-day interruption for maintenance operations, would be “completely” stopped until a turbine is repaired.

Ukraine’s nuclear plant goes offline amid fighting

Europe’s largest nuclear plant was once again knocked offline in the early hours of the day amid sustained shelling that destroyed a key power line and penetrated deep into the plant, local Russian-backed authorities announced.

The claims came barely a day after a team of inspectors from the UN nuclear agency arrived at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which has been caught in fierce fighting between Ukrainian and Russian forces.

Russia says it foiled Ukrainian attempt to seize nuclear plant

Ukrainian forces attempted to capture the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in an attack on the facility on Friday night, Russia’s defence ministry has said in its daily briefing.

The ministry added a group of the Ukrainian navy, with more than 250 soldiers, attempted to land on the coast of a lake near the Zaporizhzhia plant in southern Ukraine at about 11pm (20:00 GMT).

Russia announced its forces foiled the attack using military helicopters and fighter jets.

Report: No Russia demand for Iran forces leaving Syria base

Supporters of Syria, Iran and Russia

The British daily quoted unnamed sources as saying that Russia called on Iran to leave military bases in the west of Syria’s Hama Province and also withdraw from its bases in central and western Syria.

Western media also jumped on the report, claiming that Russia made such a demand after a surge in attacks attributed to the Zionist regime against Iranian forces.

Nour News said the report by Asharq Al-Awsat is a lie and Russia never made such a demand.

The Iranian news outlet added that the British newspaper’s report also exaggerates the Zionist regime’s attacks.

Nour News said Iran plays an advisory role in Syria in coordination with the Syrian government and with the aim of fighting terrorism.

According to the media outlet, Iran and Syria are pressing ahead with their strategic cooperation forcefully and fabricating such reports is only aimed at boosting the morale of Takfiri terrorists in Syria and portraying the Zionist regime as effective in regional political and security equations.

Iran says favors more talks with Saudi Arabia

Iranian Foreign Minister Spokesman Nasser Kanaani

Speaking after a visit to IRNA news agency’s headquarters in Tehran, Kanaani said this is important as it allows the two sides to normalize their relations.

He added that there are a range of issues over which Tehran and Riyadh can hold talks, noting that these issues are both bilateral and regional.

The Foreign Ministry spokesman also spoke about the case of Iranian national incarcerated in Sweden Hamid Nouri.

Kanaani said both Nouri’s detention and trial were illegal and that Iran believes the accusations leveled against him were baseless.

Kanaani stressed that Iran is using all legal and political channels as well to win Nouri’s freedom.

According to the Foreign Ministry spokesman, the Iranian Judiciary is also making efforts to this end.

IRGC Navy’s commander: We will be tough on enemies

Admiral Alireza Tangsiri

Admiral Alireza Tangsiri said today, thanks to the efforts of the brave naval forces of the IRGC and the Army and their round the clock monitoring and intelligence dominance, security has been restored to the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.

Tangsiri added that the naval forces of both the IRGC and the Army are carrying out their missions forcefully and in full concert.

He noted that only Iran and other regional countries are responsible for providing security in the Persian Gulf and extra-regional countries have no responsibility here.

The commander of the IRGC’s Navy also hailed the Iranian forces for their efforts to protect the region, vowing that Iran’s naval forces will be tough on the enemies.

US State Department source: Deal with Iran best option

US State Department

In an interview with Al-Arabiya Network, the source noted that the US government sees an agreement with Iran as the best possible option.

The source added that the US emphasizes cooperation with Iran to realize and probe the effects of uranium on its nuclear facilities.

Earlier, Iran announced it has submitted a “constructive” response to American comments on an EU-led draft of a possible deal on the restoration of the 2015 nuclear agreement to the European Union’s coordinator Josep Borrell.

“After receiving the US response, the Islamic Republic of Iran’s team of experts precisely reviewed it, and Iran’s responses had been drafted and submitted to the coordinator following evaluations at different levels,” Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Nanaani said on Thursday.

He added Tehran’s text was “constructive” and served to help conclude the negotiations on lifting sanctions and reviving the Joint Comprehensive Plan Of Action(JCPOA), the official name of nuclear deal.

Washington has confirmed it had received the text but gave a different assessment.

“We can confirm that we have received Iran’s response through the EU,” a State Department spokesperson said on Friday, adding, “We are studying it and will respond through the EU, but unfortunately it is not constructive.”

White House National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson also noted, “Some gaps have closed in recent weeks but others remain.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian stated on Wednesday that Tehran wanted stronger guarantees Washington will not abandon the deal again.

He also reaffirmed Tehran’s position that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)’s probe into Iran’s nuclear deal based on Israeli claims, must be dropped.

All Russian delegates to UN General Assembly denied US visas: Envoy

UN General Assembly

“As of September 1, 2022 none of the 56 Russian representatives from the main and advance group have received entry visas to the United States. Similar situation exists with the accompanying journalists and crew members of the flight of our Minister,” Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya said in a letter to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, obtained by TASS.

Nebenzya reiterated that the US, as a host nation of the UN, is obliged to ensure participation of delegations to the global organization’s events.

“In this regard we would ask you to once again emphasize to the authorities of the United States that they must promptly isuue requested visas for all Russian delegates and accompanying persons, including Russian journalists who are to stay in New York for media coverage of our Foreign Minister’s visit,” the letter reads.

According to the document, the United States has been denying visas to Russian delegates assigned to UN events over the past few months.

“For the last several months the authorities of the United States have been constantly refusing to grant entry visas to a number of Russian delegates assigned to take part in the official United Nations events. Among the last examples of that kind are cancelled visits of the Minister of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation Mr. Vladimir Kolokoltsev,” Nebenzya added.

The High-Level Week of the UN General Assembly, traditionally attended by heads of states and ministers, will begin on September 20. According to the tentative schedule of the event, the Russian minister is to deliver his speech on September 24.

Iran’s Leader urges vigilance against US divisive plots in Muslim world

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei

In a meeting on Saturday with participants in the Ahl al-Bayt World Assembly in Tehran, the Leader invited all Muslim countries to remain indifferent to any classification of followers of Islam such as “Sunni and Shia.”

“The Islamic Republic, as the hoisted flag of the Ahl al-Bayt (the family of Prophet Muhammad) against the system of hegemony, believes that in the Islamic world, no dividing line based on religion, ethnicity, sect, and race is real, and that the sole real and distinct line is that which separates the Islamic world from the front of atheism and global arrogance,” he added.

Ayatollah Khamenei said the hegemonic system keeps harboring enmity toward Iran since the Islamic Republic has been encouraging other nations to stand against bullying.

The Leader referred to Iran’s measures that thwarted criminal US plots in different regional countries, such as enabling the defeat of the Daesh terror group, saying this prompted a campaign of Iranophobia and Shiaphobia and allegations of Iranian meddling in other countries.

The Leader emphasized that Iran, contrary to those accusations, does not interfere in the affairs of other countries, adding that leveling such allegations are rooted in the inability of the domineering powers to stop the progress of the Islamic establishment in Iran.

“Everyone should be vigilant against hegemonic policies and avoid accompanying them (hegemonic powers),” Ayatollah Khamenei advised.

Daily: Iran’s nuclear know-how best guarantee to keep US in future deal

Iran Nuclear Program

Sharq argued in an editorial on Saturday that the incumbent US administration would be unable to keep its successor committed to a revived Iran deal unless such an agreement would win two thirds of votes at the US Senate.

There are two types of guarantees: political and inherent ones, it said.
Political guarantees could be counted on only during the term of the current administration in Washington, whereas the “inherently-present” guarantees mean a capability to revive Iran’s nuclear program in the event of Washington’s re-withdrawal from the nuclear deal in the future, it explained.

Iran can rely on its own nuclear know-how, the experience of scientists at home, and its nuclear infrastructure with self-confidence and process with the negotiations without asking the US for guarantees, Sharq said.

“Undoubtedly, this would be the only effective guarantee that could create a credible obstacle in the way of the future US administration’s [possible] exist from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (the nuclear deal),” the daily added.

Army air defenses can monitor 1000s of kilometers beyond Iran borders: Cmdr.

Iran Radar System

Brigadier General Alireza Sabahifard made the remarks at a meeting with a group of foreign military attachés to Tehran on Saturday, which marked the anniversary of the foundation of the Army’s Air Defense Force.

He said the Force had managed to overcome all the sanctions and restrictions imposed on the country and turn into an exemplary power in the region through reliance on domestic know-how, innovation and a committed workforce.

The Army’s Air Defense Force, which is on the cutting edge of global technology in the world, can keep an eye on developments thousands of kilometers beyond Iranian frontiers and give a decisive and crushing response if any aircraft intrudes the country’s air space.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran constantly seeks lasting peace and friendship in the region and the entire world.

“The Army’s Air Defense Force is growing and playing a part every single moment in defense-related sciences in line with [the agenda] to counter threats,” the commander said.

Iran, in terms of defense hardware, depends on no country and has achieved a degree of growth that it can even exchange knowledge with and export Iranian-made equipment to other countries, Sabahifard said.

Iranian MP: Iran has potential to help stop Ukraine war

Russia Ukraine War

Fada Hossein Maleki, a member of the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of the Iranian parliament, told IRNA that all European countries, including France have asked Iran to push mediation efforts for termination of the conflict.

“Due to Iran’s privileged and geopolitical position, the Europeans have asked the Islamic Republic to prevent a full-scale war in the heart of Europe,” he said, adding, “If Russia drags the war into the heart of Europe, all European equations will definitely be disturbed and the US will suffer the most from the war.”

Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine on February 24 saying the move was provoked by NATO’s eastward expansion and refusal to give security assurances to Moscow.

Maleki said concerns are growing in Europe over energy rationing after Russia’s state-run natural gas giant Gazprom completely cut gas deliveries to Europe through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline.

The Iranian parliamentarian said, “Russians are Iran’s partners and share a common language with Iran in regional developments. Due to the closeness, Iran’s role in ending the crisis in Ukraine is certainly effective,” he concluded.
