Iranian Researchers Develop Luminous Fibres for Rugs, Carpets

A group of Iranian researchers have developed luminous fibres which could be used in the production of rugs and carpets.

The so-called “light-emitting” smart fibres look like ordinary threads, but they shine in the dark.

“The only difference they (luminous fibres) have in comparison with ordinary fibres is that they shine in the dark,” said Samaneh Balbasi, a member of the research team that developed the smart fibres, as quoted by the Iranian Students’ News Agency (ISNA).

The fibres could also be used in the form of patterns that show the logo of the company producing the carpets, she said.

According to the researcher, the plan is aimed at preserving the originality of Iranian carpets and rugs.

She also said the technology can be used in other products as well.

The researcher said the plan is on the course of being registered under the Patent Cooperation Treaty before being patented.
