“600k people die of exposure to tobacco smoke in Iran each year”

The head of the Secretariat of Iran’s National Tobacco Control Headquarters says 600 thousand people die each year because of exposure to tobacco smoke also known as environmental tobacco smoke (ETS).

This means the people lose their lives not because of their own smoking, but due to being exposed to someone else’s cigarette, cigar, or pipe smoke.

ETS can also be described as the material in indoor air that originates from tobacco smoke.

The official added that 1 million and 200 thousand out of 8 million deaths due to smoke-related causes in the world are blamed on ETC.

This means that half of the ETS fatalities happen in Iran. Scientists say smoking is the leading cause of preventable death.
