Giant Gas Projects Confirm IRGC’s Engineering Power: Commander

The world now acknowledges the IRGC’s engineering and technical capabilities, which led to the glorious completion of two South Pars gas field phases after years of hard work, the top general said at a meeting in Iran’s southern coastal region of Assaluyeh on Tuesday.

He noted that inauguration of the two phases opened the way for the IRGC to undertake other engineering projects.

According to the general, Khatam al-Anbia Construction Base, a conglomerate belonging to the IRGC, is working on three other phases of the offshore gas field.

Phases 15 and 16 of South Pars were connected to the national grid in January in a ceremony attended by President Hassan Rouhani.

The South Pars gas field, whose development has been divided into 24 phases, is located in the Persian Gulf straddling the maritime border between Iran and Qatar. It is estimated that the Iranian section of the field contains 14 trillion cubic meters of gas and 18 billion barrels of condensates in place.

South Korea to build steel mill in Iran

POSCO has said in a statement that it plans to take 8 percent of the project to build the 1.6 million-ton steel plant with Iran’s Pars Kohan Diarparsian Steel (PKP) in cooperation with its affiliates.

The plant will be built in the port city of Chabahar in Iran’s southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchestan.

POSCO aims to break ground on the plant next year, with a plan to add facilities producing cold-rolled and galvanized steel in 2019, Reuters has quoted a company spokesman as saying.

Iran is currently the largest steelmaker in the Middle East and North Africa. The country’s steel output totaled 16.33 million tons in 2014, securing the country’s place as the 15th largest producer in the world.

The country aims to more than triple its steel output to 55 million tons by 2025, hoping to reduce its imports of steel products such as auto sheets.

South Korean steelmakers controlled over half the Iranian market before the Western sanctions were imposed, according to POSCO’s research centre.

As part of the deal, POSCO plans to transfer to Iran its so-called FINEX technology, which it touts as being more environmentally-friendly and cost-efficient than standard steelmaking methods.

POSCO’s construction unit, POSCO Engineering & Construction, also plans to build a plant to generate power as part of the project, using gas created by the steel factory.

The construction unit also expects to construct desalination facilities to produce 60,000 tons of water a day.

Iran slams double-standards in human rights

Addressing the 31st UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on Tuesday, Mohammad Javad Larijani, the secretary general of Iranian High Council for Human Rights, said self-proclaimed flag bearers of human rights in the world are “close allies” with regimes that deprive their people of the right to decide their future.

He said the so-called advocates of human rights are “totally ignoring the responsibility which they bear” under “basic international human rights documents.”

In a statement on Monday, Amnesty International urged an arms embargo on Saudi Arabia, which is involved in military aggression against Yemen.

On February 25, the European Parliament also passed a resolution demanding the imposition of an arms embargo against Saudi Arabia.

Members of the European Parliament called on EU member states to stop selling weapons to the Riyadh regime as it is accused of targeting civilians in Yemen.

“Saudi Arabia is a top arms client of the UK and France, and there is evidence that these weapons have been used in gross violations of international law in Yemen, where thousands of civilians have been killed since the start of the war,” Alyn Smith, the Greens/European Free Alliance foreign affairs spokesman, said.

According to a recent report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), Saudi Arabia’s imports for 2011-15 increased by 275 percent compared with 2006–10. Britain and France are the main European suppliers of arms to Saudi Arabia. The British government has licensed USD 7.8 billion in sales of arms, fighter jets and other military hardware to Riyadh since Prime Minister David Cameron came to power in 2010. France also signed USD 12 billion in contracts with Saudi Arabia in 2015 alone.

Larijani highlighted the double-standard policies adopted by regimes that deprive their citizens of the “very basic and minimal right to participate in shaping their destiny” while claiming “adherence to human rights.”

Iran twinned votes offer new model

Larijani touched on Iran’s recently held twinned elections for the parliament and the Assembly of Experts with more than 60-percent voter turnout.

He said the two elections serve as an example for other countries in the world to follow.

“Now a new model for public sphere is emerging: representative democracy based on Islamic rationality,” said Larijani, adding that Iran’s political establishment is a “democratic polity based on Islamic rationality rather than secular-liberal rationality.”

He said that Iran’s elections “offer the people of the Islamic world a new option: to reform their society, they are not obliged to choose between secular-liberal democracies or sink into extremism.”

Iranian Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli on Monday announced the end of vote counting in the 10th parliamentary and 5th Assembly of Experts elections with an overall turnout of 62 percent nationwide. At least 33 million out of the 55 million eligible voters took part in the two votes on Friday.

Ballots, not bullets can solve Syria crisis

Larijani reaffirmed Iran’s longtime position that ongoing crisis in Syria must be resolved through a free election and not militarily.

“Iran has always insisted that there is no military solution to the Syrian crisis. Only ballots – not bullets – can ultimately usher in a new era in Syria,” said Iran’s human rights chief.

He stressed that Iran has constantly “advocated an immediate ceasefire and an end to the bloodshed” and “dialogue between the Syrian government and the opposition groups who reject terrorism.”

The foreign-sponsored conflict in Syria, which started in March 2011, has claimed the lives of some 470,000 people and left 1.9 million injured, according to the Syrian Center for Policy Research.

Saudis, Israel after Shia-Sunni split: Nasrallah

Hassan Nasrollah

In a televised speech on Tuesday, he also said that Hezbollah will not resign from the government. ‘We are partners and holding on to it is a national responsibility.’

‘I assure to you that today we are in a very strong status … stronger than any time in the past five years, we are not worried, and we are concerned about the security, stability, and civil peace,’ he added.

Referring to the sarcastic video on the Saudi-financed MBC against the Hezbollah, he downplayed its effect and said, ‘Anyone can wage a media campaign against us … this is an indication to their weakness.’

‘Since Saudi Arabia announced the halt of its military assistance to Lebanon, a major campaign was launched,’ Nasrallah added.

He also offered condolences to the families of Hezbollah martyrs who were killed while securing Aleppo city against terrorists in Syria.

Leader’s Letters to Western Youth, Initiative to Introduce True Islam

Addressing a conference here in Tehran on Tuesday, Velayati said the Westerners, including Americans and Europeans, have been using any means to counter Iran’s Islamic Revolution, and are now spreading extremism to distort the image of Islam and counter the cultural waves of Islamic Awakening.

The twin letters by Ayatollah Khamenei to the Western youth, however, directly told the young generation that the biased image introduced by Westerners is not the true image of Islam, he noted.

Ayatollah Khamenei in January 2015 in a letter introduced the true image of Islam to youths in Europe and North America, and elaborated on the reasons behind the West’s attempts to spread Islamophobia.

The Leader wrote his second letter to the youth in the West on November 29, following a series of terrorist attacks in Paris.

In that letter, the Leader underlined that it is only the “youth , who by learning lessons from today’s hardships, will be able to find new solutions for building the future, and block off-roads which have led the West to this current position.”

Iran Eyes Investment in Zimbabwe Ostrich Breeding

“Recently, I was in Iran where I met an investor who’s keen to venture into a partnership to breed ostriches here (Zimbabwe). The investor has indicated that he is prepared to bring in about 2,000 ostriches into the country,” said Nyoni as cited by Chronicle on Tuesday.

It is believed that Zimbabwe is losing about $9 million in potential ostrich exports due to the collapse of the industry over the last decade owing to economic challenges and disease outbreak.

“In the past, Zimbabwean farmers used to produce about 30,000 ostriches per year,” she added.

At present, Zimbabwe’s ostrich population has drastically dwindled with a few birds being kept in private wildlife parks.

Syrian Developments on Good Track: Iranian Deputy FM

“If countries contribute to the fight against terrorism and the ceasefire process with firm determination, then it can be said that developments in Syria are on a good path,” Amir Abdollahian said Tuesday in a meeting with Director of Swiss Foreign Ministry’s Middle East and North Africa Division Wolfgang Amadeus Bruelhart in Tehran.

In that case, there would be a better prospect for dialogue and political resolution of the Syrian crisis, the Iranian diplomat added.

During the meeting, the two sides also exchanged views about other developments in the region and the world, including the Saudi-led war against Yemen and the humanitarian crisis in the Arabian Peninsula country.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with various terrorist groups, including Daesh (ISIL), currently controlling parts of it.

According to a new report by the Syrian Center for Policy Research, the conflict has claimed the lives of over 470,000 people, injured 1.9 million others, and displaced nearly half of the country’s pre-war population of about 23 million within or beyond its borders.

Yemen’s defenseless people have also been under massive attacks by a coalition led by the Saudi regime for nearly a year but Riyadh has reached none of its objectives in Yemen so far.

Since March 2015, Saudi Arabia and some of its Arab allies have been launching deadly airstrikes against the Houthi Ansarullah movement in an attempt to restore power to the fugitive former President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh.

More than 8000 Yemenis, including many women and children, have died in the Saudi-led aggression so far.

Iranian President Urges Enhancement of Ties with Romania

“Given the extensive capacities and capabilities of the two countries in the majority of economic areas including such fields as energy and industry, the level of mutual cooperation and the volume of economic exchanges should be enhanced, and efforts should be doubled in this field,” Rouhani said.

He made the remarks in a meeting with Romanian Foreign Minister Lazar Comanescu here in the Iranian capital.

“Tehran and Bucharest should open a new chapter of accelerated reinforcement of ties and mutual political, economic, cultural, and regional cooperation,” he added.

The Iranian president further underlined the need for activation of both countries’ private sectors on the path towards the development and deepening of Iran-Romania economic cooperation, saying that there are great opportunities for public and private sectors in the two countries, which should be tapped into.

Rouhani also referred to Iran’s distinguished geographical location, which connects the north to the south and the west to the east, saying that Tehran attaches great significance to the development of railroad corridors.

Romania can play an important role in the economic relations on the two poles of this transit corridor, he added.

Comanescu, for his part, underscored Bucharest’s resolve to promote the level of its cooperation with Tehran in all political, economic, cultural, and scientific fields.

The Romanian minister, who is leading a high-ranking economic delegation in his three-day visit to Tehran, went on to say that the visit by such a huge and unprecedented delegation from Romania shows that the European country insists on expanding its bilateral relations with Iran.

“Iran’s private and public sectors can consider Romania as a gate for exporting their productions to Europe,” he added.

Rouhani vows to privatize Iran’s car industry

President Rouhani in his remarks emphasized that people should be happy about the quality of cars in Iran, adding that the only way for this to happen is to have private sector corporations produce cars.

“The satisfaction of people has a special important for the government. The fact that we …produce cars and impose them on the people and tell them that this is only thing you can choose … is something that this government can never accept,” he told a conference of auto producers.

“Everyone should struggle for the satisfaction of the people and we need to take serious steps toward this direction in the car industry. Iran’s car industry should be completely privatized and become competitive.”

Rouhani said that the government has over the past few years strongly supported the state corporations that produce cars by devising heavy tariffs on imports of cars. He specifically mentioned a government plan to provide loans to people as another key step that the government had taken to encourage consumers to purchase cars.

However, the president emphasized that the government’s abilities to support the state car producers are limited and cannot continue eternally.
