Russia eyeing Iran military helicopter market

“The lifting of sanctions gives an opportunity to provide the Iranian side new helicopters,” the TASS news agency quoted the Russian Helicopters company as saying on Monday.

The Moscow-based company had initially announced in December the possible delivery of several Russian-made military helicopters to Iran following the removal of anti-Iran sanctions.

“Russian Helicopters possesses the production capacity needed to meet Iran’s needs for modern helicopters in the shortest possible time,” the company’s deputy CEO, Alexander Shcherbinin, said on December 22.

On Saturday, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini announced that sanctions imposed on Tehran have been lifted as the nuclear agreement between the country and world powers came into force after the International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed that Iran had met its commitments under the historic deal.

Iran and the P5+1 countries — the United States, Britain, Russia, China, France and Germany — finalized the nuclear agreement, dubbed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, in Vienna on July 14, 2015.

Iran sanctions removal to raise trade: Russia

An unnamed official at Russia’s Central Bank told the country’s TASS news agency on Monday that a number of areas, including energy, agriculture and the military could experience an expansion in relations.

“Lifting the sanctions against Iran, on the one hand, it may contribute to the development of Russian-Iranian cooperation in energy, agriculture, defense industry and other areas, and thus have a positive impact on the economies of both countries,” the official said.

Iran-Russia trade reached over 7 billion dollars last year and is thus expected to hike in 2016.

Tehran has also announced readiness to attract foreign direct investment following the recent implementation of its nuclear agreement with six world powers.

On Saturday, Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council – the United States, Britain, France, Russia and China – plus Germany (P5+1) started to implement the nuclear agreement, aka the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), they had reached in the Austrian capital, Vienna, on July 14, 2015.

The deal was implemented after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said the Islamic Republic had taken the “necessary preparatory steps to start the implementation of” the nuclear agreement.

After the JCPOA went into effect, all nuclear-related sanctions imposed on Iran by the European Union, the United Nations Security Council and the United States were lifted. Iran in return has put some limitations on its nuclear activities.

The JCPOA was struck after two and a half years of intensive talks between Iran and the P5+1.

President praises nation’s resistance, patience during nuclear talks

Speaking in an economic forum, he called the nuclear negotiations between Iran and P5+1 as tough and complicated.

Rouhani referred to certain states efforts to sabotage the process of nuclear talks between Iran and world powers and thanked the Iranian nuclear negotiating team’s difficult work which resulted in the final nuclear deal.

Speaking about the so-called ‘we are concerned’ political groups who are critical of the nuclear deal, he said that many tried to disappoint people about success of talks but the negotiators’ hard efforts led to removal of anti-Iran sanctions and in the meantime, recognition of peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program.

On Saturday (Jan 16), Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini read out a joint statement in the Austrian capital, Vienna, announcing that the JCPOA had come into force.

According to the statement, all nuclear-related sanctions imposed on Iran by the European Union, the UN Security Council and the US are lifted.

The announcement was made hours after the IAEA chief confirmed in a report that Iran has remained committed to the nuclear agreement with the world powers.

Yukiyano Amano said in the report that Iran had taken the necessary preparatory steps to start the implementation of the JCPOA.

The report was made after ‘inspectors on the ground verified that Iran has carried out all measures required under the (July deal) … to enable Implementation Day to occur,’ Amano said in a statement on January 16.

New US bans have no intl. legal ground: Zarif

“No measure against the Islamic Republic of Iran will go unanswered and we will respond proportionally to any move,” Zarif told the IRIB 1 television channel late Monday night.

Zarif said US claims about Iran’s missile activities are unlawful, citing UN Resolution 2231 which only bans development of missiles capable of nuclear warheads.

“While Resolution 1929 banned any missile-related activities, this restraint in Resolution 2231 only includes missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads. This is while we basically do not need such missiles,” he said.

“This US claim has no international ground and, as per the directive of President (Hassan Rouhani), we will continue our missile activities more than before with the aim of deterrence,” Zarif added.

On Sunday, the US Department of the Treasury announced new sanctions on several individuals and firms over Iran’s missile program, a day after similar bans were officially lifted against the Islamic Republic.

The new sanctions were in response to Iran’s successful test of its first guided ballistic missile, Emad, in October.

Reacting to the bans, President Hassan Rouhani ordered Iran’s Defense Ministry to expedite boosting the country’s missile capabilities.

On Monday, Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan said Iran would unveil new homemade missiles in the near future.

“Any attempt to impose new sanctions under irrelevant pretexts is indicative of continued US hostile policy and antagonism with the Iranian nation, and a futile effort to undermine Iran’s defense might,” Dehqan said.

In recent years, Iran has made great achievements in its defense sector and attained self-sufficiency in producing essential military equipment and systems.

The Islamic Republic has repeatedly said its military might poses no threat to other countries, reiterating that its defense doctrine is based on deterrence.

Saudis’ Iranophobia creating tensions in Middle East: Zarif

Zarif made the remarks during an interview broadcast on Iranian TV on Monday, adding that the Saudis’ actions result from their fear over the implementation of Iran’s nuclear agreement with world powers.

Zarif noted that among other actions, Saudi Arabia executed top Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr and reduced oil prices to stoke regional tensions.

“Cutting oil prices harmed them more than it harmed us,” he said, adding that the “Saudis cannot further their policies by propagating Iranophoic lies.”

Iran does not seek to create regional tensions and has never done so, he noted, adding that, “As a powerful country, Iran will move past all these desperate actions” but will not allow anybody to disrespect its people.

“Enmity with Iran has never had any benefits for anyone, including the regional powers, and the interest of our friends in the region is in treading the path of friendship,” he stated.

Iran to test new missiles despite US sanctions: Defense minister

“[Any] attempt to impose new sanctions [against Iran] under irrelevant pretexts is indicative of the continued US hostile policy and acrimony toward the Iranian nation, and a futile effort to undermine Iran’s defense might,” Dehqan said on Monday.

He added that the Islamic Republic of Iran’s missile industry is fully domestically-manufactured and anchored in science and expertise of the country’s defense sector.

“Hence, sanctions against [certain] people and companies will have no impact on the development of the industry, and we will actually demonstrate [their ineffectiveness] by displaying new missiles,” he added.

Earlier on Monday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the country will continue to enhance its missile capabilities in defiance of the “destructive” US sanctions over the Islamic Republic’s missile program.

“We will respond to such propaganda stunts and disruptive measures by more robustly pursuing our lawful missile program and promoting our defense capabilities and national security,” the statement added.

It further noted that Iran’s missiles serve defensive and deterrent purposes and have not been designed to carry nuclear warheads.

“The Iranian missile program has by no means been designed to carry nuclear weapons and is not in contravention of any international principle,” the statement pointed out.

The US Department of the Treasury said in a statement on Sunday that it has imposed new sanctions on several individuals and firms over Iran’s ballistic missile program, claiming that the program “poses a significant threat to regional and global security.”

The statement said five Iranian citizens and a network of companies based in the United Arab Emirates and China were added to a US blacklist.

On October 11, Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) successfully test-fired its first guided ballistic missile dubbed Emad. Washington slammed the test, claiming the projectile is capable of carrying a nuclear warhead. It vowed to respond with more sanctions.

In recent years, Iran has made great achievements in its defense sector and attained self-sufficiency in producing essential military equipment and systems.

Iran’s President Briefs Supreme Leader on Nuclear Achievements

In the letter which was written on Saturday and published on Monday, Rouhani pointed to 12 years of resistance the Iranian nation showed to threats and sanctions, and underlined 11 achievements of this resistance.

Recognition of Iran’s rights to have peaceful nuclear activities, continuation of the country’s enrichment program in a more developed way, and considerable increase of Iran’s strategic uranium stockpile are among the achievements mentioned by Rouhani.

He also explained that Iran will henceforth become one of the few countries that exports such sensitive materials as enriched uranium and heavy water.

Among the economic, political, and legal achievements of the nuclear deal mentioned by the president are the termination of six anti-Iran United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Resolutions as well as twelve resolutions and five decisions by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors.

Termination of economic and financial sanctions imposed on the country by the UNSC, the European Union, and the United States were also removed, Rouhani said in the letter, adding that the grounds are now prepared for Iran’s powerful presence in global economy.

Most importantly, the Iranian president added, years of efforts by the enemies of Iran and Islam to portray a scary image of the Islamic Revolution failed, and Iran’s humane and peace-seeking image sparkled throughout the world.

President Rouhani further congratulated the Leader on the “great success”, and appreciated Ayatollah Khamenei’s leadership and guidance throughout the negotiations.

This victory was the result of the Iranian nation’s resistance to all pressures and deficiencies as well as thirty months of long and breathtaking negotiations, he added.

The settlement of the country’s nuclear issue, and the successful interaction with six world powers, consolidated Iran’s regional and international might, President Rouhani added.

He finally reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to tap into the opportunity and use the removal of sanctions to pave the way for Iran’s economic prosperity through serious and effective implementation of “Resistance Economy” policies.

Spokesman: Improvement in Tehran-Riyadh ties needs change in Saudi policies

Jaberi Ansari said Iran welcomes all efforts being made by the friendly countries to solve the problem, but all those endeavors need change in the Saudi wrong policies.

By such policies, Saudi Arabia sees its interests in aggravating crises in the region, he added.

On January 2, Saudi Arabia executed Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr, a Shia Muslim cleric known for his sermons criticizing the kingdom’s government and for his support of political protests in the country’s oil-rich Eastern Province.

At that day, the Saudi Interior Ministry said 47 people have been executed on charges of what it referred to as terrorism.

Prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr was among those executed.

The Saudi move triggered mass protests in Iran and other countries.

After execution of Sheikh al-Nimr, a group of youth gathered ‘illegally’ in front of Saudi Embassy in Tehran and damaged the embassy’s building.

The Police forces arrested a number of demonstrators.

On the pretext of the issue of its embassy, Riyadh has formed a so-called anti-Iran coalition and is trying to add members to that coalition by taking unwise measures.

A day after the event, Saudi foreign minister announced on January 3 that Riyadh severed its diplomatic relations with Tehran.

Iran’s First Vice-President Eshaq Jahangiri commented on the Saudi announcement saying cutting ties with Iran is detriment to Riyadh not to Tehran.

In a statement released on Monday, the foreign ministry noted that the US administration was forced to succumb to the will of the Iranian nation and admit Iran’s drive for economic progress and better political interaction with the world by agreeing to lifting of nuclear sanctions, removal of illegal bars on trade and economic cooperation with Iran and releasing Iran’s blocked assets which were worth tens of billions of dollars, all in the course of just one day.

More importantly, the fact that it agreed to settle part of a 37-year old problem about Iran’s military purchases by paying a sum of 1,700 million dollars – which was the original amount – as well as compensations, release or lift restrictions on 28 Iranians who were living in the US in return for freedom of 4 people in Iranian prisons and also instant removal of sanctions on Iran’s Sepah Bank indicate that the US has in practice admitted the failure of its policy of pressures and sanctions.

The statement went on to note that selecting the very day, in which the process of removal of unfair nuclear sanctions against Iran started, to announce the names of another group of individuals and companies for imposition of yet new sets of sanctions by the US Treasury because of their alleged involvement in Iran’s defense program is nothing but an attempt to please power circles and lobbies both in and out of the US.

This kind of behavior has taken the US foreign policy apparatus as hostage for decades now and war-mongers feel dismay with the failure of their Islamophobia policies, the statement said.

Unfortunately, the statement stressed, the US government has decided to feed its long-standing addiction to imposing inefficient sanctions by adding the names of a number of Iranian individuals and companies to the list of its sanctions.

It went on to stress that Iran’s missile program is in no way designed to carry nuclear warheads and thus violates no international regulations.

As stated before, the statement underlined, the Islamic Republic of Iran will go on to monitor the precise implementation of the JCPOA by the US government and the same time try to response to its populist offensives by pursuing its lawful missile program, enhancing its military might and promoting national security by more zeal.

The global community and economic institutions, too, have already proven their indifference to such propaganda attempts by the US government which is taking place to silence the war-mongers in and outside America, the statement added.

It stressed that these companies are keen to take the opportunity of post-sanctions situation to cooperate with Iran.

The foreign ministry statement underlined that the structure of sanctions has fallen apart and is absolutely impossible to be mended.

It said the Islamic Republic of Iran is determined to use the post-sanctions opportunities to promote its policy of constructive interaction.
