Iranian Newspapers Headlines
Iranian Newspapers Headlines

On January 19, 2016only two days after sanctions removal, what grabbed most of the Press headlines, surprisingly enough, was not Iranian market’s recovery, plunging prices and promises by authorities of a better life for Iranian people as it was long hoped by the nation during the course of the nuclear talks. Instead, screening results of the qualities of Parliament and Assembly of Experts hopefuls by the Guardian Council which disqualified 60% of the candidates, among who were outstanding applicants like the Imam Khomeini’s grandson of Seyed Hassan Khomeini and many others, made many headlines.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani’s bid to talk the Guardian Council into reconsidering its vetting results also prompted a lot of stories by newspapers on the day.

The new US sanctions on Iran’s missiles program only one day after the implementation day was also taken up by most Iranian dailies on Tuesday.

Iran to present ‘golden opportunities’ for foreign businesses

Following the implementation of the nuclear agreement between Iran and the 5+1 group of countries and the consequent removal of nuclear and economic sanctions against the Islamic Republic on Sat. 16 January, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif attended a meeting with Iran’s ambassadors and heads of diplomatic missions to other countries on Monday, outlining his views on the results of the nuclear deal and the outlook of international and regional developments in the light of Tehran’s relations with other countries.

Referring to the attempts made during the course of 12 years of negotiations, Zarif added “during this time we were in a situation where we had to overcome difficult challenges in order to prove our capabilities and achieve our basic rights to peaceful nuclear energy.”

“What our people rightfully proved to the world was that pressure and sanctions will have no effect and efficacy,” he said.

Elsewhere, the Iranian top diplomat referred to the current developments in the Persian Gulf region, saying “we wish for security and stability and deem any form of tension in opposition to the security and stability of Iran and the region.”

Zarif called for closer cooperation with neighboring countries based on understanding, goodwill, negotiation and wise diplomacy in a bid to improve the process of peace and stability in the Persian Gulf region.

Iran ready to meet Europe’s gas need

Managing Director for International Relations of the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) Azizollah Ramezani welcomed the idea of the European Union officials travelling to Iran for reinvigorating mutual relations in the fields of energy and natural gas; “Iran, with the largest gas reserves in the world, is well-placed to sell gas to all countries.”

Ramezani emphasized that gas exports should not be merely limited to neighboring countries or the region asserting “accordingly, supplying gas to far-reached countries particularly EU-member countries need to be put on the agenda.”

The official further stressed that gas exports to Europe brings about international and political advantages in addition to economic achievements; “currently, Russia is selling gas to Europe via a 3000-kilometer pipeline and so can Iran.”

“We welcome holding of talks with EU authorities on expansion of ties in gas and energy areas,” noted the Ramezani adding “various routes have been planned for transferring natural gas to European countries.”

NIGC managing director for international affairs said Iranian gas can be supplied to Europe through the Black Sea, Syria, Iraq, Turkey or several pipelines.

The official deemed low production cost as one major advantage of gas exports to Europe reminding “Iran’s trade policy during the post-sanction era would be diversifying of gas export markets.”

European Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy Miguel Arias Cañete had stated yesterday that in February 2016, the European Commission will accomplish the first technical assessment mission aiming to investigate venues for gas cooperation with Iran.

An official at the European Union has also announced that 15 EU officials will make a 14-day technical visit to Iran.

According to the official, one of the objectives of the Europe Commission is to make efforts to promote the export of Iranian gas via pipeline and LNG shipments within the framework of the project called the European Union’s Southern Gas Corridor.

Praguians give standing ovation to ‘Risk of Acid Rain’

Sanaiha, the director of the film, welcomed the warm reception of the film by Praguians. Among other Iranian films in the festival were ‘Tales,’ ‘Taxi,’ ‘What Time Is It in Your World?’ ‘Melbourne,’ ‘Thirteen,’ ‘Today,’ and ‘Jumping from Low Height.’

‘Risk of Acid Rain’ won the Crystal Simorgh for Best Script in last year’s (33rd) Fajr International Film Festival. The film have in its repertoire of foreign honors ‘Risk of Acid Rain’ was also nominated for Best Film, Best Script, and Best Actor awards and actually won the Best Brilliant Talent Award (Best Debutante Film) in festival of Iranian Association of Film Critics. The film has been present in the 17th Mumbai Film Festival, 11th Zurich Film Festival, and Colombo Film Festival, winning the Jury Special Prize of the festival. The film also won Netpac Award in Australia. Mohammad Atebaei is manager of international screening of the film.

Canada signals openness to restoring Iran diplomatic ties

Such a move would be a reversal of the foreign policy set by the previous Tory administration, which had vowed to keep its sanctions regime against Iran after a preliminary deal on the Islamic republic’s nuclear program in 2013.

Trudeau said Iran had made ‘significant movement towards respecting international expectations’ regarding its nuclear program, Western media reported.

‘That is something positive and I expect there will be (diplomatic) links now between Canada and Iran,’ he said.

‘We will certainly be discussing that further at a cabinet meeting in the coming weeks,’ he added, according to the AFP report.

Canada broke diplomatic ties with Iran in September 2012.

At the time, then foreign affairs minister John Baird did not cite a specific incident for the breakdown in relations but issued a strongly worded attack.

In July, Iran and global powers reached a deal in Vienna that saw sanctions lifted this weekend.

On Sunday, Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Stephane Dion told the Globe and Mail newspaper that Ottawa would decide ‘in a timely fashion’ whether to also lift sanctions in order to allow Canadian companies to join US and EU firms rushing to do business in Iran.

‘Because if other countries move before us, it’s not a way to help our industry,’ he said, adding that Canadian sanctions alone would not be very effective.

Russia eyeing Iran military helicopter market

“The lifting of sanctions gives an opportunity to provide the Iranian side new helicopters,” the TASS news agency quoted the Russian Helicopters company as saying on Monday.

The Moscow-based company had initially announced in December the possible delivery of several Russian-made military helicopters to Iran following the removal of anti-Iran sanctions.

“Russian Helicopters possesses the production capacity needed to meet Iran’s needs for modern helicopters in the shortest possible time,” the company’s deputy CEO, Alexander Shcherbinin, said on December 22.

On Saturday, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini announced that sanctions imposed on Tehran have been lifted as the nuclear agreement between the country and world powers came into force after the International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed that Iran had met its commitments under the historic deal.

Iran and the P5+1 countries — the United States, Britain, Russia, China, France and Germany — finalized the nuclear agreement, dubbed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, in Vienna on July 14, 2015.

Iran sanctions removal to raise trade: Russia

An unnamed official at Russia’s Central Bank told the country’s TASS news agency on Monday that a number of areas, including energy, agriculture and the military could experience an expansion in relations.

“Lifting the sanctions against Iran, on the one hand, it may contribute to the development of Russian-Iranian cooperation in energy, agriculture, defense industry and other areas, and thus have a positive impact on the economies of both countries,” the official said.

Iran-Russia trade reached over 7 billion dollars last year and is thus expected to hike in 2016.

Tehran has also announced readiness to attract foreign direct investment following the recent implementation of its nuclear agreement with six world powers.

On Saturday, Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council – the United States, Britain, France, Russia and China – plus Germany (P5+1) started to implement the nuclear agreement, aka the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), they had reached in the Austrian capital, Vienna, on July 14, 2015.

The deal was implemented after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said the Islamic Republic had taken the “necessary preparatory steps to start the implementation of” the nuclear agreement.

After the JCPOA went into effect, all nuclear-related sanctions imposed on Iran by the European Union, the United Nations Security Council and the United States were lifted. Iran in return has put some limitations on its nuclear activities.

The JCPOA was struck after two and a half years of intensive talks between Iran and the P5+1.

President praises nation’s resistance, patience during nuclear talks

Rouhani

Speaking in an economic forum, he called the nuclear negotiations between Iran and P5+1 as tough and complicated.

Rouhani referred to certain states efforts to sabotage the process of nuclear talks between Iran and world powers and thanked the Iranian nuclear negotiating team’s difficult work which resulted in the final nuclear deal.

Speaking about the so-called ‘we are concerned’ political groups who are critical of the nuclear deal, he said that many tried to disappoint people about success of talks but the negotiators’ hard efforts led to removal of anti-Iran sanctions and in the meantime, recognition of peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program.

On Saturday (Jan 16), Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini read out a joint statement in the Austrian capital, Vienna, announcing that the JCPOA had come into force.

According to the statement, all nuclear-related sanctions imposed on Iran by the European Union, the UN Security Council and the US are lifted.

The announcement was made hours after the IAEA chief confirmed in a report that Iran has remained committed to the nuclear agreement with the world powers.

Yukiyano Amano said in the report that Iran had taken the necessary preparatory steps to start the implementation of the JCPOA.

The report was made after ‘inspectors on the ground verified that Iran has carried out all measures required under the (July deal) … to enable Implementation Day to occur,’ Amano said in a statement on January 16.

Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council – the United States, Britain, France, Russia and China – plus Germany finalized the JCPOA in Vienna, on July 14, 2015.

New US bans have no intl. legal ground: Zarif

“No measure against the Islamic Republic of Iran will go unanswered and we will respond proportionally to any move,” Zarif told the IRIB 1 television channel late Monday night.

Zarif said US claims about Iran’s missile activities are unlawful, citing UN Resolution 2231 which only bans development of missiles capable of nuclear warheads.

“While Resolution 1929 banned any missile-related activities, this restraint in Resolution 2231 only includes missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads. This is while we basically do not need such missiles,” he said.

“This US claim has no international ground and, as per the directive of President (Hassan Rouhani), we will continue our missile activities more than before with the aim of deterrence,” Zarif added.

On Sunday, the US Department of the Treasury announced new sanctions on several individuals and firms over Iran’s missile program, a day after similar bans were officially lifted against the Islamic Republic.

The new sanctions were in response to Iran’s successful test of its first guided ballistic missile, Emad, in October.

Reacting to the bans, President Hassan Rouhani ordered Iran’s Defense Ministry to expedite boosting the country’s missile capabilities.

On Monday, Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan said Iran would unveil new homemade missiles in the near future.

“Any attempt to impose new sanctions under irrelevant pretexts is indicative of continued US hostile policy and antagonism with the Iranian nation, and a futile effort to undermine Iran’s defense might,” Dehqan said.

In recent years, Iran has made great achievements in its defense sector and attained self-sufficiency in producing essential military equipment and systems.

The Islamic Republic has repeatedly said its military might poses no threat to other countries, reiterating that its defense doctrine is based on deterrence.
