Intelligence Ministry: Takfiri Terrorists Planned Attacks in Several Iranian Provinces

Intelligence Ministry Official Website

According to the Ministry’s Public Relations Department, a series of bombings had been planned for different parts of Iran for upcoming occasions in Ramadan.

However, the statement added, Intelligence Ministry Forces in Tehran and some other provinces managed to foil the “satanic” measures of Takfiri terrorists. Several bombs, which were ready to explode, and a huge amount of explosive ingredients were seized, it noted.

The Intelligence Ministry further noted that field investigations are underway inside and outside the country, and the terrorists are being interrogated. “The Iranian nation will be informed of further details once security conditions are appropriate,” the statement added.

The statement came after the Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), Ali Shamkhani, announced on Sunday that Iranian security forces had recently captured a group who wanted to launch a suicide attack in the capital city of Tehran during the holy Islamic month of Ramadan.

Certain moves were planned to be made in recent days, but a “brief report” led to the discovery of a network, which was disbanded by Iranian security forces during Ramadan, Shamkhani said in a ceremony in Tehran. “The group had plans to launch suicide operation in Tehran.”

Rouhani Praises Iranian Sports Stars

President Rouhani underlined the importance of exercise and sport in society and said, “Athletes are the ones who bring honour to the nation while representing Iranian culture and identity to the world. Professional sport, once merged with Islamic values and humane morals, could serve as the greatest shield against global Iranophobia and present the true image of Iran and Iranians to the world.”

“I’m pleased to live in a country where the young generation reach great achievements in scientific fields as well as sport competitions. We also have great heroes in the arena of diplomacy who managed to win over the international community and claim Iran’s nuclear rights last year.”

Noting Iran’s history “which is full of pride and honour”, Rouhani hailed the prominent role of martyrs during the Islamic Revolution and the Iraq-imposed War, underlining that Iran would never forget these heroes.

The President also lauded Iranian female athletes, “Who take part in sport competitions observing the Islamic rules [of hijab], which is a unique characteristic of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” and underlined that “this is an honour for the whole Islamic world, and marks our fidelity to our culture and identity.”

Rouhani meanwhile pointed to the efforts his government had made so far to support Iranian sportsmen and sportswomen on their way to the Olympics and Paralympics, and emphasized that the government will keep helping Iranian athletes in international competitions.

“Let’s Adorn Footbridges with Flowers”

Unlike most urbanites, who merely feel grief and sorrow when seeing the scene of a suicide, a number of photo-journalists from the capital city of Tehran have launched an anti-suicide campaign entitled Ba Omid be Khoda Khodkoshi Mamnou (roughly meaning: With Hope in God, Preventing Suicide), and have initiated the “photography-on-a-footbridge-with-a-flower” challenge.

The campaign started two weeks ago when the organizers published a video clip on Instagram with a comment that read: “People have overlooked footbridges, even those equipped with escalators, for the past few years. Now, however, the structures are gaining publicity; they are no longer disused, but are being used as jumping-off spots for you! Your death is suicide and is tantamount to the death of all of us. Dear fellow citizens! Trust in God, so we can move beyond despair and build a bridge to life. We shall shout: Viva Life!”

The campaigners call on their fellow photographers to take pictures of flowers on footbridges for five days and share them on their Instagram pages.

“We are not taken in by fantasy,” says Mojtaba Heidari, freelance photographer and one of the founding members of the campaign. “We are well aware that taking pictures with a flower cannot be a cure-all for all the economic, mental, and psychological troubles of the victims. We are not also speaking down from positions of luxury – everybody knows how photographers live in this country and how little they make. So it is all about carrying out our social responsibility toward our fellow citizens.”

57303587 (1)Regarding the campaign’s original philosophy, Heidari said, “This is a symbolic move. We want to tell the potential victims that their lives and their happiness are important to other citizens. We believe that the death of an Iranian citizen is the death of all other Iranians, and the same goes for saving the life of a fellow citizen. The founders of this campaign agree on an important notion: aside from recognizing all the economic, social and cultural problems that lead people to end their lives, we maintain that a lack of belief in God and losing hope in his support are the prime reasons for one to kill themselves, not only in Tehran, but in all other major cities in the world.”

He said social and economic shortcomings will not be resolved overnight and such difficulties have always been and will be the case [in society]. “We believe that the only thing that can help people entrapped in the modern world’s hardships is trust in God and his support. This is the only factor that can uplift a negative life. We want to remind the potential victims to trust in God and hope for his support.

The social photographer also said, “The campaign has sparked so much interest among professional and amateur photographers. All citizens may join the campaign with their mobile phones, a flower and a pinch of creativity, then share their photos on social media.”

Heidari further said that a collection of the best photos will be released as a photo report by various news agencies across the country. In further steps, the pictures will be put on display in a gallery in the future.

Suicide Attack Foiled in Tehran during Ramadan: Security Official

Shamkhani

Certain moves were planned to be made in recent days, but a “brief report” led to the discovery of a network, which was disbanded by Iranian security forces during Ramadan, Shamkhani said in a ceremony in Tehran.

“The group had plans to launch suicide operation in Tehran,” he went on to say, as reported by ISNA and translated by IFP.

He further noted that Iran is safer than European states thanks to people’s participation in establishment of security.

“Iran’s security and police forces have great experiences in all types of war, and this has well prepared them for the fight against terrorists,” he noted.

“When Europeans and Westerners visit Iran, they wonder why they feel safer in Tehran than Paris,” Shamkhani added.

Paris, the First Leg of Zarif’s Third European Tour

Zarif-to-Europe

Consultations and reciprocal visits of senior Iranian and European officials following the nuclear deal have created a major current in diplomacy. In one of the most recent examples, in her visit to Iran back in May, EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini was accompanied by seven commissioners, which was a rare move in the history of the European Union.

Meanwhile, the foreign ministers of many European countries have visited Tehran in the aftermath of the JCPOA, which was finalized back in July 2015.

Now, Iran’s diplomatic efforts are focused on removal of obstacles in the way of the country’s banking and financial interactions with other parts of the world.

During the previous rounds of his European tour, Zarif held a wide range of discussions with senior officials of Poland, Sweden, Latvia, Finland, Norway and Germany, and this will continue in the third round starting in Paris, the first leg of the tour, which will later take him to Amsterdam.

After the European tour, he is due to visit Tashkent, Uzbekistan, to attend Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) meeting. Iran currently has observer status in the SCO. Its full membership is expected to be discussed during the upcoming summit. The anti-Iran sanctions were one of the main obstacles in the way of full SCO membership.

India and Pakistan were accepted as members of the SCO last year.

Iran’s President Urges Efforts to Utilize JCPOA for Economic Development

President Rouhani

“The JCPOA has just provided a proper and good atmosphere for various [economic] activities,” Rouhani said at an iftar (fast breaking) ceremony in Tehran on Saturday, June 18.

He was referring to the removal of economic anti-Iran sanctions after the country and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) started implementing the JCPOA back in January, as reported by Tasnim.

“If we do not utilize this atmosphere in various areas, we will gain no benefits,” Rouhani said, adding that the good climate should therefore be used for the country’s development and economic activities.

Iranian Media ‘Have Poor Influence’ On Global Scene: Rouhani

Elsewhere in his remarks, President Rouhani highlighted the importance of Iranian media presence in regional and global arenas, and called on the country’s outlets to have a stronger role.

The presence should be strengthened so that the country’s voice can reach the world through mass, cyber and written media, he noted during the ceremony, which was attended by journalists and media representatives.

“The world today needs to hear the words and logic of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and thus, we should improve and strengthen the position and influence of our media on the global scene so that our words can be heard against the [anti-Iran propaganda of] enemies and rivals,” he went on to say, as reported by Mehr.

The Iranian President described any weak point in the relations between the government and the media as ‘a great deficiency’, highlighting the need for bridging the gap and strengthening the links.

He further noted that his government honours the freedom of press in the country, saying any obstacles hindering the full realization of such freedom should be removed.

Elsewhere, he maintained that his administration is a non-partisan government, and as such, does not have the full support of certain newspapers and organizations. “In this case, every time the government achieves certain progress, various factions claim in the achievement, but once there are difficulties, they pull aside and deny any involvement.”

Rouhani also referred to one of his meetings on economic issues with the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, saying “Ayatollah Khamenei underscored that one of the greatest achievements of the 11th government [Rouhani’s administration] was the establishment of peace and calm in the economy and society, and stressed that such peace should not be disturbed.”

Foreign Ministry Tasked with Pursuing Dust Pollution Issue

Dust pollution

Chaired by Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli, the latest developments regarding ongoing dust pollution in a number of cities and provinces in Iran were considered in the meeting.

The officials discussed the moves that can be made against the crisis, which is mainly caused by dust coming from Iraq, Syria, and Saudi Arabia.

According to an ISNA report, as translated by IFP, Esmaeil Najjar, the head of Crisis Management Organization, announced after the meeting that Ilam, Kordestan, Khuzestan, Kermanshah, Hamadan, Lorestan, Qom, and Tehran are the provinces currently gripped by the pollution.

“One of the issues discussed in this meeting was whether international organizations should control the dust in other countries. Unfortunately, Iraq, Syria, and Saudi Arabia are the origins of the dust pollution in Iran. Iraq and Syria have particular problems, and Saudi Arabia lacks a serious will to fight the issue.”

“The origins of the dust coming from Iraq to Iran are mainly located in ISIS-held regions; therefore, Iraqis have naturally considered the issue of security as their first priority, and have no time to control the dust issue,” Najjar noted.

Therefore, he added, it was decided that the Foreign Ministry, in cooperation with international bodies, tries to control the dust pollution.

The dust has disturbed daily life in western and south-western parts of Iran, even cancelling flights at Abadan international airport on June 17. In addition to flight cancellations, dust storms have also prompted health warnings and resulted in closure of schools and offices in some areas.

A new wave of storms began on Thursday, June 16, but the authorities expect the situation to improve in the coming days, IRNA reported.

Iraq has long suffered from periodic, blinding sandstorms, but several years of drought have aggravated the situation there.

Environmental Issues Top JICA To-Do List

13_JICA_0

Speaking at a meeting in Rasht, Gilan Province, Kohei Sato stressed JICA’s commitment to improving quality of life and tackling environmental issues before highlighting Tehran’s air pollution and Anzali Wetland’s struggle with a host of issues as examples of the agency’s main concerns, Mehr reported.

Tehran’s Department of Environment and JICA have reportedly launched a study into the contribution of mobile and stationary sources of contaminants to the pollution problems in the capital. Although mobile sources such as vehicles are responsible for 80% of Tehran’s air pollution, officials maintain that the contribution of stationary sources is grossly underestimated.

On the topic of the Anzali Wetland (in Gilan), Sato said JICA has been involved in a project with local environment authorities to devise a comprehensive management plan for the imperilled wetland. “The project will not have any tangible short-term results, but it will be effective in the long run,” he told an audience that included senior provincial officials and members of NGOs.

The wetland is besieged by invasive plant species, namely water hyacinth—a floating plant with thick, glossy, round leaves, inflated leaf stems and very showy lavender flowers. Water hyacinths can swiftly and aggressively cover the entire wetland, dramatically impacting water flow, blocking sunlight from reaching aquatic plants in the depths of the water and starving the wetland of oxygen, killing whatever marine life it hosts.

The wetland also suffers from high levels of sedimentation and has become a dumping ground for urban and industrial waste, which have reduced the depth of the wetland by nine meters in 40 years.

Reduction of the wetland’s depth has increased the lagoon’s flood risk by hampering its ability to hold water. In case of heavy rainfall, it will be unable to perform its natural function and Anzali will face a major environmental crisis.

Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s Case under Preliminary Investigation: Spokesman

Mohseni-Ejei

Speaking in his weekly press conference, Mohseni Ejei noted that he is not allowed to provide details on Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s case, but her case is of a security type, and its investigation is being conducted in Tehran.

“The case is in its preliminary investigations phase,” he noted, as reported by ISNA and translated by IFP.

“One of the important issues for the Judiciary is to confront those who have made or are making inroads into the country,” Mohseni Ejei said, adding that preemptive measures and confrontation are very important in such cases.

The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) base in Iran’s southern province of Kerman confirmed on Wednesday, June 15, that its intelligence department had arrested Zaghari-Ratcliffe back on April 3.

In a statement, the IRGC provincial base said Zaghari-Ratcliffe was arrested at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport by the IRGC intelligence forces and taken to the city of Kerman.

The statement described her as “A main ringleader of institutes affiliated with foreign intelligence agencies” and an employee of “foreign media and intelligence services”.

According to the IRGC statement, she had been “involved in planning and performing media and cyber projects with the purpose of the “soft overthrow” of the Islamic Republic Establishment.”

Iranian Firm Building First Catamaran Passenger Ship

Work on the construction of the new 26-metre vessel that has a capacity to carry 158 people on board has already begun at Qeshm Island’s Madkandaloo’s shipyard, according to Tasnim, quoting Reza Almasi, a senior company official.

The watercraft features two parallel aluminium hulls of equal size with double decks. It also enjoys the state-of-the-art navigation and safety systems. The company official said there are already negotiations for the construction of three such vessels.

Catamarans have a smaller hydrodynamic resistance than comparable mono-hulls, requiring less propulsive power from either sails or motors. These ships range in size from small to large such as naval vessels and car ferries.

Iran has recently taken steps to increase its maritime shipping capacity. Earlier this month, media reports said the country had placed orders worth nearly $2.4 billion with South Korean shipyards for the construction of ships to carry Iran’s oil and petrochemical products. The orders were placed by the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL) and the oil producer Iranian Offshore Oil Company (IOOC).

The Korean companies were said to be Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, which is a subsidiary of shipbuilding giant Hyundai Heavy Industries Group, as well as Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Company.Meanwhile, China’s Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Company is also reportedly in talks with IRISL over new ship orders.

The agreements are part of Iran’s efforts to make a comeback in global shipping after the lifting of international sanctions earlier this year.
