Thousands in Iraq Attend General Soleimani’s Funeral

Mourners were out on the streets of Kadhimiya carrying pictures of Qassem Soleimani, the commander of the Quds Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the second-in-command of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), who were killed in a US drone attack near the International Baghdad Airport early Friday.

The procession, attended by Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi, received extensive coverage by many media outlets around the world.

Mourners were chanting slogans against the US and Israeli, vowing to avenge the assassination of the two martyrs.

The bodies were then taken to Baghdad for another funeral there.

Soleimani’s body is to be transferred to Iran after the funeral processions in Baghdad, Najaf and Karbala.

His body will then be transferred to Iran, where ceremonies will be held for the commander in Ahvaz and the holy city of Mashhad.

A procession will also take place in Tehran on Monday, January 6, 2020. During the procession, Leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei will lead in a prayer ceremony for the late general.

The body will then be taken to the city of Kerman, Soleimani’s birthplace, where the he will be laid to rest.

Speaking in a televised interview on Friday night, Mohammad Javad Zarif touched upon a message from the US relayed to Iran via the Swiss embassy.

“The Swiss, who represent US interests [in Iran], brought a very unwise message from the Americans, which received a firm response,” he noted.

“The Americans made a wrong move and are now worried about its consequences,” said Zarif.

“Mr. Pompeo has made several phone calls to say they are not seeking tension, but seeking diplomacy,”

“[But] you were seeking tension, and no one buys these US gestures. It seems that the Americans will eliminate themselves from the region with their miscalculation,” he said.

Zarif’s comments came after IRGC Lieutenant Commander Brigadier General Ali Fadavi suggested on Friday that the Americans had asked Iran via Switzerland to give a response ‘proportional to the US attack’.

In his interview, Zarif stressed that Iran will not be trapped by Washington’s alarmism and chantage.

“The United States made a miscalculation and received extremely inappropriate consultations from some reactionary and puppet heads of state in the region as well as officials of the Zionist regime [of Israel] whose terrorist-breeding policies had been foiled thanks to the vigilance and bravery of General Soleimani,” he said.

“They had a deep grudge against the general,” said Zarif.

Zarif also said the US assassination of general Soleimani amounted to the violation of Iraq’s territorial integrity and national sovereignty.

He said the assassination ordered by US President Donald Trump was an election ploy as well both for Trump himself and for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“The assassination was also aimed at relieving the pressure of impeachment on Trump,” the top diplomat noted.

He described the US assassination of General Soleimani as a cowardly act. “They could not hit the Iranian commander [in normal way]. They had but to kill the general in that manner …. It is a coward way to use state terrorism.”

The assassination of General Soleimani also hurt Iraqi people’s feelings, as he was a messenger of peace who fought terrorism and violence, he added.

FM Zarif Pledges Cooperation with New IRGC Quds Force Chief

Foreign Minister Zarif on Friday released a message after Leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei appointed Brigadier General Esmaeil Qa’ani as the new commander of the IRGC Quds Force.

In the message, the top Iranian diplomat paid tribute to late commander of the IRGC Quds Force Major General Qassem Soleimani as a “glorious general of Islam and Iran” who was assassinated in a US airstrike in Baghdad in the early hours of Friday.

Foreign Minister Zarif also wished General Qa’ani success in his new post, emphasizing that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was prepared to keep working in cooperation with the incoming commander and with the IRGC Quds Force like the past.

Deputy Commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Brigadier General Ali Fadavi said vengeance for the assassination of top Iranian General Qassem Soleimani is sure to take place.

“The Americans should be waiting for that severe revenge; that vengeance is not to be taken by Iran only. …The great resistance front covering a vast geographical area stands ready to take revenge, and that is sure to happen,” said the top commander.

“They resorted to such means as diplomacy this morning [Friday] and even told us ‘if you want to take revenge, do it in a way that’s proportional to what we did; but they cannot decide anything [for us],” he added.

“That will take place at the most opportune time and in the best manner possible,” he added.

General Fadavi underlined that all people around the world as well as many countries in the Middle East hate US officials.

“Soon we will see that the Americans will not be there in the region,” he said.

General Fadavi noted that the US has suffered defeats in the Middle East region.

“The Americans, with all their regional and trans-regional allies, suffered defeats in all cases in the West Asia region; these defeats were so big that they seriously began to think of resorting to official terrorists such as ISIS and al-Qaeda,” he noted.

In a statement released on Friday evening, the Supreme National Security Council of Iran expressed condolences over the martyrdom of Major General Soleimani and the other commanders of the war against terrorism, including deputy head of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, in an American airstrike in Baghdad.

Paying tribute to General Soleimani as a source of pride and dignity for the Iranians, the whole Muslims and the oppressed people across the world, the statement emphasized that his loss would have no impact on the activities of the Iranian Armed Forces and the country’s defense capabilities. 

“The US must know that the criminal attack against General Soleimani was that country’s biggest strategic mistake in the West Asia region, and the US will not get rid of the consequences of such miscalculation easily,” the SNSC added.

Making a reference to the warning from Leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei that a harsh revenge awaits the criminals behind killing of the late commander, the statement said, “Those criminals will face harsh retaliation from those seeking to revenge the blood of General Soleimani at the appropriate time and place.” 

The statement further underlined that the axis of resistance would further grow following this American crime, noting that such “cowardly and blind measures” could by no means weaken the Islamic Republic of Iran’s resolve to continue the policy of active resistance without any decline.

The Iranian council also described the assassination as a revenge that the US has taken for the defeat of ISIL and other Takfiri terrorist groups in Iraq and Syria at the hands of the great commanders of the war on terrorism.

The simultaneous martyrdom of the revered Iranian and Iraqi commanders in the attack signifies the “unbreakable bonds between the Iranian and Iraqi nations in future,” the statement added.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council has made the necessary decisions in today’s extraordinary meeting by studying various aspects of this incident and, hereby, announces that the United States of America’s regime will be held accountable for all consequences of such criminal adventurism,” the statement added.

The council finally noted that the blood of General Soleimani, like the other martyrs of the Islamic Revolution, will be a source of blessing for the great Iranian nation and those pursuing liberty across the world.
