Iranian, Russian Diplomats Discuss Promotion of Media Cooperation

In the videoconference meeting on Tuesday evening, Mousavi and Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova discussed the ways to enhance cooperation between the two countries in the media sphere and countering the untrue atmosphere the Western states have created.

The two spokespersons dismissed the claims raised by the Western states that the media is impartial and independent, stressing that unfortunately the media in the West has currently turned into an instrument for psychological warfare and propagating false news against the independent countries.

Mousavi and Zakharova also highlighted the growing relations between Iran and Russia in all fields, describing the close ties between the two countries and their common stances on various issues, including the regional cooperation and the opposition to the cruel Western sanctions, as an opportunity for closer cooperation between the Foreign Ministry spokespersons of the two nations.

They also talked about other issues such as the exchange of media delegations, preparing the ground for interaction between the media communities of the two countries, facilitating the interviews that the two countries’ media conduct with each other’s officials, and the plans to keep holding bilateral consultations between the Foreign Ministry spokespersons of the two countries and with the Foreign Ministry spokespersons of the other friendly and like-minded nations.

Iran Denies Report of Partial Sanctions Removal

Iran Condemns US Oil Deal with Syrian Kurdish Group

Asked by reporters on Tuesday, Seyyed Abbas Mousavi rejected the media reports citing an anonymous source about the temporary removal of part of the so-called non-targeted sanctions on Tehran.

Such comments are unreal fabricated reports whose purpose is not clear, he added.

“It is not unlikely that the failure of the US’ policy of sanctions would be a source of quarrel between Europe and the US, but what relates to the Islamic Republic of Iran is that the US’ unilateral sanctions are illegal and cruel, and according to the JCPOA and the (UNSC) Resolution 2231, the US must remove and nullify the whole sanctions it has re-imposed after its withdrawal from the JCPOA,” Mousavi said.

Iran’s COVID-19 Cases Exceed 330,000: Ministry

Some 9,000 Iranians Contract Coronavirus in Single Day

In a press briefing on Tuesday, Sima-Sadat Lari said the virus has killed 184 patients since Monday noon, increasing the overall death toll to 18,800.

So far, she added, 288,620 patients have recovered from the disease or been discharged from the hospital.

Lari said 3,983 patients are also in critical conditions caused by more severe infection.
The spokeswoman noted that 2,736,514 COVID-19 tests have been taken across the country so far.

She said the high-risk “red” zones include Tehran, Mazandaran, East Azarbaijan, Isfahan, Ardabil, Khorasan Razavi, North Khorasan, Gilan, Alborz, Semnan, Golestan, Markazi, Kerman, and Yazd provinces.

The “orange” zones also include West Azarbaijan, Bushehr, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari, Hormozgan, Zanjan, Hamadan, Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad, Lorestan, Ilam, Fars, Qazvin, and Qom provinces, according to the spokeswoman.

Aims, Dimensions of Saudi Nuclear Program Lack Transparency: Iran

Seyyed Abbas Mousavi made the comment in response to reports suggesting Riyadh is running a covert atomic program.

“A cause for concern about Saudi Arabia’s nuclear program is that inspectors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are not present in this country,” said the spokesman.

“As a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), Saudi Arabia is entitled to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, but, at the same time, it should make good on its commitments under the treaty,” he noted.

The spokesman touched upon Saudi Arabia cashing in on the weakness of the system of the Safeguards Agreement over the past 20 years.

“Despite the fact that Saudi Arabia is running an extensive nuclear program at the moment, it still refuses to accept inspections by the IAEA,” he added.

“Such behaviour has given rise to meaningful suspicions about Riyadh’s intentions with regards to using nuclear energy,” he said.

He also weighed in on why the IAEA does not use tools at its disposal to hold Riyadh accountable.

“The IAEA director general and its Board of Governors have a duty to put an end to this situation and to Saudi Arabia taking advantage of an old monitoring loophole,” added Mousavi.

“The IAEA chief knows better than anyone else what tools are available to follow up on and tackle this safeguards fault,” he said.

Mousavi fulminated against the IAEA for failing to utilize these tools.
“We don’t understand why no voice is heard from the IAEA in this regard,” he said.

“This situation brings to mind a double standard, especially given the unjustifiable rush at the agency over Iran’s nuclear program,” the spokesman said.

“The formation of such an idea about the IAEA’s approach toward safeguards issues will harm the principles of neutrality, independence and professionalism of the IAEA,” he said.

“As for developments in Lebanon, we are waiting for the Lebanese government to conduct its examinations and announce the results,” he said.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran would like all countries not to make any opportunistic intervention in determining Lebanon’s fate,” he said.

“In particular, the United States’ hypocrisy of claiming to be helping Lebanon is a cause for concern, especially at a time when it won’t lift its inhumane sanctions in the current deplorable situation,” he said.

“We are confident that the Lebanese nation is able to weather these tough times if it maintains its unity and relies on domestic resources and forces,” the spokesman added.

“Meanwhile, the Islamic Republic of Iran maintains its close contact with the Lebanese government and will keep sending humanitarian aid and items needed by [Lebanese] people,” he noted.

Rabiei’s comments come as the Lebanese government has resigned amid angry protests following the devastating blast which struck the capital, Beirut, last Tuesday.

Lebanese President Michel Aoun accepted the resignation of the government, asking it to stay on in a caretaker capacity until a new cabinet is formed.
