Iran Warns against Any Foreign Interference in Lebanon Politics

Ali Rabiei made the comment as he weighed in on the recent developments in Lebanon and Iran’s stance on the situation in that country.

“As for developments in Lebanon, we are waiting for the Lebanese government to conduct its examinations and announce the results,” he said.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran would like all countries not to make any opportunistic intervention in determining Lebanon’s fate,” he said.

“In particular, the United States’ hypocrisy of claiming to be helping Lebanon is a cause for concern, especially at a time when it won’t lift its inhumane sanctions in the current deplorable situation,” he said.

“We are confident that the Lebanese nation is able to weather these tough times if it maintains its unity and relies on domestic resources and forces,” the spokesman added.

“Meanwhile, the Islamic Republic of Iran maintains its close contact with the Lebanese government and will keep sending humanitarian aid and items needed by [Lebanese] people,” he noted.

Rabiei’s comments come as the Lebanese government has resigned amid angry protests following the devastating blast which struck the capital, Beirut, last Tuesday.

Lebanese President Michel Aoun accepted the resignation of the government, asking it to stay on in a caretaker capacity until a new cabinet is formed.

Iran, UN to Draw Up Natl. Tourism Promotion Plan with EU Funding

A senior official with the Ministry says phase two of the program has been approved, which will see the organization continue to work closely with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as well as with the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

“Based on an official letter sent by the deputy head of UNESCO’s regional office in Tehran to the Tourism Department of Iran, the EU funding has been approved for phase two of joint cooperation to draw up a national program on the promotion of tourism,” said Alireza Rahimi.

He said UNESCO had already announced its readiness in a meeting via videoconference to keep working with Iran on implementing the said project.

“The Tourism Department has been notified of the approval of phase two of financing for the continuation of cooperation based on finalizing the proposal of the plan with the technical help of UNWTO’s international consultants and the participation of beneficiaries in the process of drawing up the plan,” he added.

Five Spies Arrested at Iranian Gov’t Bodies: Judiciary

A spokesperson for the Judiciary said two of the spies have received final conviction verdicts.

“Masoud Mosahab, serving as the secretary general of the Iran-Austria Friendship Association, spied for Mossad (the Israeli secret service) and Germany’s secret service,” said the spokesperson.

“He has been sentenced to 10 years behind bars, and his verdict is final,” the spokesperson added.

“Shahram Shirkhani, who spied for Britain, has also received a final ruling. He tried to poison the minds of some managers and recruit elements for the UK’s secret service,” added the spokesperson.

“He had provided the enemy with information about our agreements in domains of the Central Bank, Melli Bank and the defence ministry,” said the spokesperson.

Iran Says Won’t Tolerate US Move to Extend UN Arms Embargo

Ali Rabiei said there will be zero tolerance when it comes to such moves against Iran.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran stands ready to prove that it will show no toleration when it comes to giving an appropriate and firm response to any provocative and illegal action,” he said.

His comments come as the United States is going to put to vote at the UN Security Council a resolution on the extension of the arms embargo on Iran on August 11, 2020.

“Before being regarded as a threat to Iran, the US move amounts to taking advantage of the US Security Council’s mechanism to threaten the council and ridiculing the mechanism of multilateralism,” said the spokesman.

“The United States wants to use the UN Security Council as leverage against the council itself and against international institutions and mechanisms of multilateralism,” he said.

“So, any resolution that would violate [UN Security Council] Resolution 2231 would be unacceptable and amounts to deriding international laws,” he noted.

“By the admission of its own leaders, the US has withdrawn from the Iran nuclear deal and has no rights with regards to text of the agreement or the UN Security Council resolution unless it fully returns to the deal and makes good on all of its obligations,” he said.

He underlined the US regime knows well that this destructive, law-evading and malevolent effort will beget another disastrous and isolating failure.

“Still, their insistence on the continuation of this already failed trend has no other meaning than refusal to accept realities, including the reality that the international community is determined to protect laws, agreement and regulations among countries, and it is a high and impenetrable bulwark against US efforts to destabilize the foundations of global stability and security,” he said.

“It seems that misled politicians in the US would like to keep failing to understand international realities to a point where the US and its method of leadership will be more discredited than ever,” he noted.

GCC Chief’s Anti-Iran Stance Not Shared by All Members: Tehran

“Saudi Arabia sent a letter to the UN Security Council expressing support for the extension of an arms embargo on the Islamic Republic of Iran most probably without the coordination of other GCC members,” said Seyyed Abbas Mousavi on Monday.

“According to informed sources, the letter signed by the GCC secretary general on Sunday and handed over to UN Security Council member states had been written without some GCC members being privy to the contents of the letter,” he added.
“We seek cooperation with regional countries, including GCC member states, and we presented the Hormuz peace plan in line with the same policy,” he said.
“Meanwhile, it would be unacceptable to hear [some countries expressing] concern over the lifting of an arms embargo on Iran. We believe it is you that have turned the region into a depot of Western and American weapons, and if someone is supposed to express concern, that will be Iran,” he noted.
The spokesman said the GCC secretary general was, in fact, “kissing up to the US” by expressing misgivings over the lifting of the arms ban on Iran.
“Some GCC member states may adopt a position against this letter,” Mousavi said.

Hook’s Resignation Triggered by Failure of Anti-Iran Efforts: Analyst

In an interview with Etemad newspaper, Kourosh Ahmadi weighed in on the reasons behind Brian Hook’s recent resignation from his position at the US State Department.

“There are no signs indicating that Hook’s resignation was due to differences between the State Department and the White House,” said the analyst.

“Pompeo is one of [US President Donald] Trump’s few associates who, at least tactically speaking, are on board with Trump, and who has had a free hand in putting pressure on Iran over the past two years,” the expert noted.

He said there are no signs, either, that would indicate any differences between Trump, Pompeo and Hook over Iran.

“Of course, it is a significant issue that Hook’s efforts against Iran failed to produce any tangible results and to bring Iran even one step closer to the negotiating table, which may be among the reasons behind his disappointment with making headway with his work which led to his resignation,” he noted.

The analyst touched upon Brian Hook’s consultations with different countries against Iran over the past weeks.

“One may specifically guess that Hook stepped down as he fell into despair after the failure of attempts by him and his superiors to win the approval of UN Security Council members to renew the arms embargo,” he said.

He said Hook travelled to 11 countries over the past month to talk the officials of those countries into supporting the extension of an arms embargo on Iran.

“While China and Russia stress that they are opposed to the extension of the embargo, most of the United States’ European allies have shown no signs, either, that suggest they see eye to eye with Washington. All this comes as the existing window to that is closing,” said the expert.

“In accordance with Resolution 2231, arms embargoes [on Iran] will be lifted on October 18, i.e., a little more than two months from now. The trend of discussions at the UN Security Council and putting to vote a US-drafted resolution on the extension of the embargoes may take two to three weeks,” he said.

He also touched upon a possible change in Washington’s approach on Iran with the resignation of Hook.

“It is unlikely that Hook’s resignation and replacing him with a more radical person would mean a change for the better in US policy on Iran,” he added.

Iran Urges UNSC to Show Its Independence on Arms Embargo Vote

‘US Bid to Restore UN Sanctions on Iran Has Dire Legal Consequences’

In a tweet on Monday, the Iranian president’s chief of staff Mahmoud Vaezi said the upcoming session of the UN Security Council to vote on the US-drafted resolution is a “big test” for the Council’s member states.

“The member states of the Security Council are on the verge of a big test to show their independence by giving a negative vote to the US regime’s pressures, which are aimed at imposing its will against Iran, violating the UN Security Council Resolution 2231 and leading the 2015 nuclear deal (JCPOA) to collapse,” he said.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Wednesday that the United Nations Security Council will vote this week on a US bid to extend the arms embargo on Iran, despite warnings by some diplomats that the measure lacks support.

“We have an objective to extend the arms embargo,” Brian Hook, special envoy for Iran, told reporters in a press call Thursday morning. “That can be done the easy way or it can be done the hard way, but it’s going to be extended.”

If the United States is unsuccessful in extending the embargo, it has threatened to trigger a return of all UN sanctions on Iran under a process agreed in the 2015 deal.

The US has been lobbying for months to get an extension of the Iran arms embargo, which expires in October as one of the conditions of the 2015 Obama-era Iran nuclear deal- formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

But this week’s Security Council resolution is likely to fail. Even if the US is able to drum up the nine votes for it to pass the chamber, it would likely face a veto from China and Russia.
In May, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani threatened a “crushing response” if the embargo on Iranian trade of conventional arms was extended.
