Iraqi Foreign Minister in Tehran for High-Level Talks

Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein arrives in Tehran on Sep. 26, 2020

During the two-day trip, Fuad Hussein will meet with Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and other Iranian officials.

The Iraqi foreign minister’s visit to Iran comes in response to his Iranian counterpart’s recent trip to Baghdad.

In his July trip to the Iraqi capital, Zarif held talks with Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi, Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi, Judiciary chief Fayek Zidan, Foreign Minister Hussein, President Barham Salih, Fatah Alliance chief Hadi al-Amiri, and National Wisdom Movement chief Ammar al-Hakim.

He also paid tribute to assassinated commanders of the anti-terrorism fight in Iraq.
Zarif later visited Erbil, the capital of Iraq’s Kurdistan Autonomous Region, and held two rounds of plenary and private meetings with Nechirvan Barzani, the president of the Kurdistan Regional Government.

He also held talks with Masrour Barzani, the prime minister of the Iraqi Kurdistan region, and Masoud Barzani, the former President of the Kurdistan Region and the leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).

5.2-Magnitude Quake Hits Iran-Turkmenistan Border

The Seismological Centre of the Geophysics Institute of the University of Tehran says the earthquake occurred at 09:16 am (local time) at a depth of 10 km underground.
The epicentre of the quake was located at 55.98 degrees longitude and 38.09 degrees latitude.

No report has been released yet on the likely casualties or damages.
Iran’s Red Crescent Society says it has sent two teams to the quake-hit areas for preliminary assessment of the damages.

Iran sits on major fault lines and is prone to near-daily earthquakes.

Iran Berates Europe for Interference under Pretext of Rights Violations

Iran Berates Europe for Interference under Pretext of Rights Violations

Esmaeil Baqaei Hamaneh said some Western countries are using human rights as an excuse to reach their goals.

“Western countries’ approach toward human rights issues will only create discord and standoffs between countries and downgrade human rights to be used as a tool to achieve political objectives,” he said.

“Some European countries have turned the Human Rights Council into an arena to meddle in the affairs of developing nations,” the top diplomat added.

“It is regrettable that some countries preach about respecting human rights while they have forgotten the crimes that they have committed in the past and present, and they cover up the fact that a great part of the predicaments that others are facing is the fallout from their own colonial policies and domineering mentality,” he noted.

“The rule of law is a prerequisite to the protection of, and respect for human rights,” he said.

“Exerting pressure on other governments under the banner of human rights in order to change domestic legal systems or interfere in judicial cases is unacceptable,” he underlined.

“The best way to realize the objectives of the [Human Rights] Council is dialogue and cooperation based on the principle of neutrality and avoiding stigmatizing and stereotyping others,” the ambassador said.

Official Blasts EU for Joint Statement on Iran’s Human Rights Situation

No Change in Iran’s Borders as Karabakh Peace Deal Unfolds: Spokesman

“The Islamic Republic of Iran considers the European Union’s move to issue a joint statement at the Human Rights Council to be unacceptable,” Khatibzadeh said on Friday.

Such a statement with a selective and baseless stance lacks validity and credibility, the Iranian official said, adding that the EU statement fundamentally runs counter to the approach to promotion of human rights.

Any abuse of the human rights mechanisms and interference in the internal affairs of Iran would be unacceptable, Khatibzadeh noted.

“’It’s not anything new that some European states are silent and indifferent in the face of the gravest violations of human rights by themselves and their allies. They are competing with each other for the sale of billions of dollars in arms to Saudi Arabia and the region’s despots for the massacre of defenceless people of Yemen,” he added.

“They (certain European states) describe the suppression of protestors, killing of black people, massacre of minorities, particularly the Muslims, the harassment and torture of prisoners and putting pressure on the migrants inside the EU borders as the enforcement of law, but at the same time call the judicial measures on the basis of the penal law made by the competent courts of the other countries a violation of human rights,” the Iranian spokesman stated.

“Such double standards show that this group of countries is not sincere in advocating human rights and reveals the political employment of such concept,” he said.

“The development and promotion of human rights at the national, regional and international levels within the framework of religious commitments and in compliance with the Constitution, the domestic law and the international treaties have been always among Iran’s priorities, and it has practically committed itself to observing them,” the spokesman added.

Khatibzadeh finally advised the European governments that seek to propose their intentions in the guise of the European Union to put on their agenda serious efforts to improve human rights among themselves and their regional allies.

Iran, Russia Refute US’ Bid to Reinstate Sanctions

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Seyyed Abbas Araqchi, who was accompanying Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in a trip to Moscow, held a meeting with Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Sergei Ryabkov on Thursday.

In the meeting, the two diplomats emphasized that the United States’ attempts to re-impose the anti-Iran sanctions lifted by the UN Security Council are illegal.

Araqchi and Ryabkov also discussed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and the efforts by the remaining parties to save and implement the agreement in full.

Iran Says Ready for Swap Deal with US on Prisoners with Dual Nationality

Iran Says Ready for Swap Deal with US on Prisoners with Dual Nationality

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Sputnik on Thursday, the Iranian minister noted that at present Iran is not detaining any American prisoner with single citizenship.

Zarif made clear that Iran was not yet ready for direct negotiations with the US government and would be using other governments, such as the Swiss, “that wish to play a positive role in this regard”, as an intermediary.

He said the United States must compensate the damage that Iran suffered if it wants to return to the nuclear deal.

“The return of the United States to the nuclear deal is the first step that they should take. For this return, [the US] must compensate for damage that it caused to the Iranian nation, as well as for measures taken by the US to undermine the nuclear deal and promise to not do it again,” Zarif added.

The top diplomat noted that every country has a right to peaceful use of nuclear energy, but the West has double standards about different states’ nuclear programs.

“We believe that all of the countries have the right for a peaceful use of the nuclear energy, including [uranium] enrichment, and this right must be exercised in a transparent manner in line with regulations issued by the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency).”

“The Western countries have double standards in this regard. If a similar control, which is carried out towards Iran, is introduced on other countries that want to have an advanced nuclear program, the international community will be in peace,” Zarif said, apparently referring to the Saudi and UAE bids to launch their own nuclear programs.

He further pointed to the move by Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates to normalize their relations with Israel, saying the two countries backstabbed Palestine by reaching the deals with Israel.

However, he added, the ceremony in the White House was not a big issue anyway, since Israel and the Arab nations have maintained contacts in the past 20 years.

“What happened in the White House was not a major development, but rather a photo opportunity that uncovered the relations that have existed for 15 or 20 years between the Arab countries along the southern coast of the Persian Gulf and the Zionist regime. These relations indicate that the slogans voiced by these countries in support of the Palestinian people are untrue, but are in actual fact a stab in the back for the Palestinian cause,” Zarif said.

The Iranian foreign minister expressed the belief that Israel’s relations with Bahrain and the UAE would “surely hurt peace in the region and the Middle East”, as they encouraged Israel to “oppress the aspirations and rights of the Palestinian people.”

“For this reason we have disputed these relations considering that they are at the expense of the region and its peoples,” Zarif added.

At the same time, the foreign minister noted that Iran was ready to improve relations with the neighbours.

“Iran’s relations with neighbouring countries are based on mutual respect, and the policy of the Islamic Republic is built on neighbouring policy, and so long as these countries wish to build good relations with Iran, these relations will remain ongoing. However, unfortunately, there are some states in the southern section of the Persian Gulf, such as the UAE, KSA [Kingdom of Saudi Arabia], and Bahrain, who do not wish to establish durable relations with Iran,” Zarif explained.

According to the foreign minister, should the Persian Gulf states at any time be ready to build good relations with Iran, Tehran will wish for that as well.

“Their relations with Israel are certainly a strong point in our relations, but they will not impede our relations with them either,” Zarif concluded.

Iran Summons Tajik Envoy to Protest Baseless Accusations

The Tajik envoy was summoned on Friday afternoon by the head of the Foreign Ministry’s Central Asia Department, and received Iran’s strong protest at the irresponsible behaviour of the Tajik state TV and its move to level false and biased charges against Iran.

It was underlined in the meeting that the Islamic Republic of Iran seeks friendly and brotherly relations with Tajikistan based on mutual respect, but the continuation of such conduct by the Tajik government is against the norms of friendly relations.

The government in Dushanbe should be mindful of the consequences of such behaviours, the ambassador was told.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran expects the Tajik government to correct its approach, especially by stopping the Tajik state TV’s false propaganda against the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the Iranian official said in the meeting.

The ambassador of Tajikistan, in turn, said he will convey the Islamic Republic’s protest to his respective government as soon as possible.

It was the second time this week that the Tajik ambassador was summoned to the Foreign Ministry to receive Tehran’s strong protest against the same issue.

The Tajik envoy had earlier been summoned by the Iranian assistant foreign minister and head of the Foreign Ministry’s Eurasia Department.

Iran-Tajikistan relations have seen tensions since 2015, when the leader of Tajikistan’s Islamic Renaissance Party, Muhiddin Kabiri, attended an international conference in Tehran.

Tajikistan has banned the party as an “extremist and terrorist organization” after it blamed IRPT for 2015 attacks on a police station and an arsenal near Dushanbe that killed 26 people.

In 2017, bilateral relations between the two countries were further strained by a documentary aired by the Tajik state TV which accused Tehran of stoking the 1992-1997 Tajik Civil War by providing funds to the Islamist opposition and training militants.

The program reportedly featured three Tajiks confessing to a string of assassinations in the mid to late 1990s.

Over 5,300 Iranian Knowledge-Based Firms Opened in 6 Years: VP

Over 5,300 Iranian Knowledge-Based Firms Opened in 6 Years: VP

During a Thursday visit to the Pardis Technology Park, a scientific centre affiliated with the Vice Presidency for Science and Technology, Sattari said governmental supports for the domestic enterprises have resulted in the opening of over 5,300 knowledge-based companies in the past six years.

The Vice Presidency for Science and Technology is currently offering more than 140 various service packages to the knowledge-based and technological companies, he noted.

Stressing the need for plans to market the domestic knowledge-based, innovative and technological products for the local consumers, Sattari said the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) can help promote the local innovation ecosystem and knowledge-based economy.

Advertising the products of small and medium knowledge-based companies on television would dramatically contribute to their growth, he added.

The vice president finally reminded the inventors and researchers that the private sector would be eager to purchase and invest in a new product only when it is worth being commercialized and would solve a problem in the society.

Iran, Syria to Form Strategic Committee of Water Cooperation

Iran, Syria to Form Strategic Committee of Water Cooperation

In a meeting held via videoconference, Iranian Energy Minister Reza Ardakanian and Syrian Minister of Water Resources Tammam Ra’ad weighed plans to carry out a water cooperation agreement that Tehran and Damascus have inked in December 2019.

They also agreed on the formation of the strategic committee on water cooperation, co-chaired by the deputy ministers, via a videoconference within the next two weeks.

In the online meeting, the Syrian minister of water resources called for the promotion of cooperation with Iran in the water and wastewater treatment projects.

Expressing satisfaction with the involvement of strong and experienced Iranian companies in the water projects in Syria, Ra’ad said his country requires the experience and technical know-how provided by the Iranian companies for reconstruction of the water and sewage treatment plants.

Iran Rejects US Envoy’s Comments on Its Role in Afghanistan

Iran Rejects US Envoy’s Comments on Its Role in Afghanistan

In comments on Thursday, Mohammad-Ebrahim Taherian said the untrue and irresponsible remarks made by the US special representative about Iran’s role in the current developments of Afghanistan clearly demonstrate Washington’s inaccurate understanding of the developments in Afghanistan.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran has officially and openly supported the launch of negotiations between the Afghan government and the Taliban and has expressed readiness to help advance the process of real and sustainable peace in that country,” he added.

“Stability in Afghanistan is an indispensable and permanent part of our policy on that country,” the Iranian envoy noted.

“The remarks made by the American official result from the gradual revelation of the mistake that architects of the Doha deal made in advancing the peace process and their resort to the blame game in order to justify the ineffectiveness of this policy by accusing the other countries,” he concluded.

His comments came after the US negotiator on Afghanistan, Zalmay Khalilzad, accused Iran of seeking to bog down its archenemy in its longest war in Afghanistan.

In remarks at a virtual event of the US Institute of Peace, Khalilzad said the United States would target any Iran-backed groups “taking action against us,” saying Washington was “monitoring them very closely.”
