The comment was made by Reza Najafi, the director general for international peace and security at the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who represented Iran at a meeting of senior officials of member states of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA).

The event chaired by Kazakhstan was held via video conference on December 11, 2020.
The meeting was themed on reviewing the situation of the region and using member states’ experience in fighting the coronavirus pandemic aimed at boosting their development and cooperation with one another.

Iran’s delegate at the meeting congratulated Kazakhstan on assuming the presidency of CICA for the years 2020-2022 and wished its new Secretary General Kairat Sarybay success.

Najafi also appreciated efforts by CICA member states to tackle existing challenges.

Iran Urges CICA to Counter US Economic Terrorism amid Pandemic

In his speech, the Iranian representative touched upon hot-button issues such as fighting the COVID-19 pandemic as the biggest global crisis, the importance of constructive and efficient cooperation in the regard, countering unilateralism and boosting multilateralism, the necessity of making sure that all humans across the world have equal access to the COVID-19 vaccine, opposition to pursuing any illegal moves, countering the destructive effects of the United States’ coercive and unilateral moves and economic terrorism on the campaign against the coronavirus pandemic.

He also appreciated relentless efforts by different state and private institutions which are seeking to find a way to end the coronavirus crisis.

Elsewhere in his remarks, he referred to the assassination of top Iranian scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, saying most CICA members have already condemned the terrorist act.
Najafi said the assassinated scientist played a key role in medical and peaceful nuclear activities, especially in the development of the first Iranian coronavirus diagnosis kit and supervising the production of the vaccine.

He highlighted the perpetrators and the terrorist regime behind Fakhrizadeh’s assassination will pay the price for their crime in due time.

He also said Iran is fully prepared to work with other CICA members in exchanging expertise and knowhow on all issues of mutual interest, especially the COVID-19 pandemic.
A meeting of senior officials of CICA is held biannually aimed at making decisions on the implementation of agreements reached and decisions adopted at meetings of CICA heads of state and ministers.

Iranian, Afghan Diplomats Hold Bilateral Talks in Kabul

In the Saturday meeting, the Afghan deputy minister expressed gratitude to Iran for hosting the Afghan refugees uninterruptedly and for supporting the peace talks in Afghanistan.

Nab also congratulated the Iranian and Afghan governments and people on the recent inauguration of Khaf-Herat railroad in an online ceremony attended by the presidents of Iran and Afghanistan, describing it as a major step in strengthening and enhancing relations between the two neighbours.

For his part, Araqchi praised the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan for its warm hospitality during his stay in Kabul.

The Iranian deputy foreign minister also condemned the rocket attacks that have killed and injured a number of Afghan citizens earlier on Saturday.

Araqchi also expressed hope that a comprehensive document on long-term cooperation between Iran and Afghanistan would be soon finalized and signed.

The two diplomats further discussed the issues relating to the comprehensive cooperation document.

They also talked about the peace negotiations between the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the Taliban, Iran’s role in creating regional consensus on the political and security conditions in Afghanistan, the expansion of political, economic and trade ties between Tehran and Kabul, and other issues of mutual interest.

Iran Starts Mass Producing Gate Valves in Defiance of Sanctions

The production line was established by two major companies and was inaugurated in a ceremony by Vice President for Science and Technology Sorena Sattari.

The gate valves are used in a pipeline almost 1,000 km long taking oil from the Goreh area to the port of Jask.

It is one of important national projects transferring some 2 million barrels of crude oil daily.
Speaking at the ceremony, the vice president said good cooperation exists between knowledge-based start-ups and major corporations, which has seen innovation and creativity finding their way into old big companies.

“It is very important to support knowledge-based companies at a time of sanctions,” he said, adding the Science and Technology Department of the Presidential Office is doing so by supporting domestic production of goods.

“Currently, there are more than 5,500 knowledge-based firms in the country, which have created more than 300 thousand jobs,” he said.

Coronavirus Vaccination to Begin in Iran in Late December: Official

Mohammad Mokhber, an official in charge, said Iran is in the final stages of developing its own vaccine for COVID-19.

“We are confident that we will produce the best vaccine in the country,” he said on Saturday.

Mokhber said he and his colleagues are ready to be injected with the vaccine.
“This vaccine will be developed from the dead virus and will have the minimum consequences,” he added.

He said each of the three phases of the vaccination will take 28 days.
“First, this vaccine will be injected into 56 people, and it will be tested on different genders,” the official noted.

“In the second phase, some 500 people will receive shots, and there will be no limitations for phase three and we can mass-produce it,” he said.

“Three to four months after the human test, we will reach a point where the country won’t need to import the vaccine,” said the official.

He said the vaccination gets underway in late December, 2020.

COVID-19 Infections, Deaths Declining Thanks to Restrictions: President

In comments on Saturday, President Hassan Rouhani further warned people against taking the COVID-19 lightly.

“One important issue that media should always highlight is the danger of regarding the coronavirus outbreak as something ordinary,” he said.

“Whenever we feel that it is over and there are no problems and dangers anymore and that we have weathered the coronavirus crisis, a resurgence of the disease and a rise in figures will immediately start in the coming weeks,” the president noted.
He said the first priority is to protect people’s health.

“Of course, coronavirus has not only affected people’s health, but their economy, culture, lives and social issues as well, and everybody should help to contain the disease,” he said.
President Rouhani noted Iran has never denied the risk posed by COVID-19.

“Unlike some countries such as the United States where its president kept saying, for weeks, that there was nothing [dangerous],” Iran publicly announced the outbreak of the disease as soon as the first infections were reported, he said.

He thanked people, medical personnel, and relevant institutions for their cooperation in the campaign against the disease.

The president called for health protocols to be observed more seriously in places like barracks and garrisons where, inevitably, more people are staying.

The president urged people to keep abiding by health protocols.

“All of us should know that it is not enough to simply comply with some health instructions such as wearing masks, observing social distancing rules and washing hands; rather, all existing health protocols must be observed, especially in the current cold season when people naturally spend most of their time in closed spaces and indoors,” he explained.

He noted the government has adopted the necessary measures to purchase the coronavirus vaccine, expressing hope people will prevent another surge in the disease by conforming to health protocols until the vaccine is distributed on a large scale.

Iran Urges IAEA Not to Be Swayed by US Pressure

Iran Sees ‘Positive Outlook’ for Ties with IAEA after Latest Report

Kazem Gharibabadi made the comments in response to remarks by Washington’s special representative on Iran Elliott Abrams, who had said the United States would keep pressuring the IAEA in coordination with Europe.

In a tweet, Gharibabadi quoted late IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano as saying that efforts to put pressure on the agency with regards to nuclear verification activities have been counterproductive.

“Now, it is evident which country Amano was referring to,” added Gharibabadi.
“We should all dismiss this pressure against the agency which is detrimental to the whole international community,” he added.

In an interview, Abrams had said the Trump administration was putting pressure on Iran to bring the country to the negotiating table.

He had also said it would be important to work with Europe to pressurized the IAEA with regards to Iran as well.

Iran Executes Rouhollah Zam on Charge of ‘Corruption on Earth’

Rouhollah Zam

He was executed on Saturday morning, according to Iranian official media.

Amad News was notorious for disseminating incriminating content against the Islamic establishment, insulting the sanctity of Iranian Muslims and publishing fake news in order to drive a wedge between the Iranian people and government.

Zam faced charges of having “committed offenses against the country’s internal and external security” and “espionage for the French intelligence service,” alongside “corruption on earth” as well as insult to “the sanctity of Islam” according to an indictment released in February.

He was arrested in October 2019 by the Intelligence Organization of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corp (IRGC).

The meticulous intelligence operation involved outmaneuvering the intelligence services of certain Western countries, especially France, which offered Zam guidance and protection for his operation.

“Intelligence forces had been keeping a watchful eye on Rouhollah Zam’s movements for a long time and he stepped into the intelligence trap set by IRGC some two years ago. Ultimately, we were able to arrest him through cooperation with other intelligence services,” Second Brigadier General Mohammad Tavallaei, a high-ranking IRGC official, said at the time.

Iran Strongly Blasts Erdogan’s ‘Interventionist’ Remarks

In a tweet on Friday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said the Turkish ambassador to Tehran was notified of Iran’s dismay over Erdoğan’s comments in Baku.

“The Turkish ambassador was reminded that it is not wise to base [a country’s] foreign policy on delusions,” the tweet read.

“There are many in Turkey who know history well. It is necessary that they remind their statesmen of the main reason for which poems were written,” he added, referring to the Araz poem recited by Erdogan in a victory parade in Baku.

Iranian lawmakers also reacted to Erdoğan’s comments.

“Erdoğan should pay attention to the fate of those who had an eye on Iran such as [former Iraqi dictator] Saddam Hussein,” said an MP, adding Iran will give them a strong slap in the face.

“The last ruler who wished Iran to be annexed to his country’s territory was smoked out. Mr. Erdoğan! Read some history instead of poetry,” said another legislator.

Yet another lawmaker noted the Turkish president is delusional.

Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, the special aide to Iran’s parliament speaker, also expressed surprise at Erdoğan’s move.

“I was surprised by Mr. Erdoğan’s remarks. I think the Turkish president himself doesn’t know what he said,” he noted.

“Mr. Erdoğan! There is a difference between being a neighbour and having an eye on a neighbouring country for conquest. Please review the history of Iran, especially that of the Islamic Republic of Iran, carefully,” he said.

In the meantime, representatives of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei in northeastern Iranian provinces of West Azerbaijan and East Azerbaijan said Erdoğan’s comments “targeted Iran’s territorial integrity.”

“The poem recited by the Turkish president were originally composed by Iranians separated from their motherland,” read the statement.

During his visit to Baku on December 10, 2020, Erdogan attended a military parade that saluted Azerbaijan’s recent victory in the bloody Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

At the ceremony, which was also attended by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, the Turkish president recited a poem which bemoans the separation of Azerbaijan under the Tukmenchay Treaty during the Russo-Persian War (1826–28), but Erdogan referred to it in the context of the occupation of Azerbaijani territories of Lachin and Karabakh.
