UN Chief Says Ready to Work With Raise for Peace, Human Rights

Antonio Guterres congratulated Raeisi on his victory in the June presidential election and said the UN is ready to work with Iran to achieve peace, security, and development in the world.

“Simultaneously with your presidency, your country, region, and the world are at a critical juncture”, he said, adding, “Today, we face many common challenges, including the Covid-19 pandemic, climate change, and long and devastating conflicts in the Middle East.”

He also said Iran has remarkable human and natural resources and this can improve the well-being of Iranians, as well as other world nations.

The UN chief said, “The United Nations and I personally are interested in working with the new government under your administration to achieve peace and security, sustainable development and human rights around the world”.

“I count on working with your administration to advance the values and principles of the United Nations Charter”, he added.

At the end of his message, Guterres said, “Your Excellency, please accept my best wishes and best regards”.

Some foreign based anti-Iran groups including the MEK have waged a campaign against the Iranian president, claiming he committed human rights violations in Iran in the 1980s. They say Raeisi should not be allowed to attend the upcoming UN General Assembly summit. The Iranian President denies involvement in any rights abuses. He says whatever he did was to defend human rights.

Offences Committed by Evin Prison Guards, Inmates: Iran Judiciary

“Some of the scenes in these videos are related to the offences committed by prison officials and guards. They are regarded as crimes and can be prosecuted,” said Zabihollah Khodaian.

“And some of the scenes are related to inmates harming or killing themselves. So, one cannot say prison guards are always to blame,” he added.

“Anyway, the prison itself affects individuals mentally and makes them angry, which, in turn, leads to many fights inside the prison,” the spokesman explained.

“So, some inmates may get into a fight. We should pay attention to this point. Such incidents happen in prisons both in the country and in other parts of the world,” he added.

Elsewhere in his remarks, he said the leaked footage is a montage.

“Those who have released the videos have actually edited them. These videos may date back to previous months and years, and they have pieced these images together. Accordingly, we should not think that such incidents happen in prisons on a daily basis,” the spokesman said.

Iran Jewish MP: US policies in line with Israel interests

Siamak Mereh Sedgh told Fars News Agency that those policies are regulated in line with the interests of pro-Israeli lobbies and capitalists.

He invoked remarks by Iran’s leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei that change of presidents doesn’t cause any change in Washington’s policies.

The Iranian MP added that the US policy on Iran has not changed since the victory of the 1979 Islamic Revolution and that they have sought to undermine the Islamic Republic and then bring about regime change.

Mereh Sedq also referred to Washington’s decision to leave Afghanistan alone in the midst of a war, saying all people should draw a lesson from what happened in Afghanistan and note the US doesn’t care an iota about other nations nor will it help anyone.

He added that the US only cares about those who fight or spy for them.

Elite Afghan Students Handed Scholarship in Iran’s Yazd University

“With the cooperation of the Iran’s National Elite’s Foundation and ambassadors of Iran and Afghanistan, university students, who are among the scientific elite of Afghanistan, and have been admitted on scholarships, will be the guests of the Islamic Republic of Iran for seven years, to study general medicine at four top universities of Iran,” the chancellor Mohammad Reza Mir Jalili said.

The official added that 20 applicants, including 6 male and 14 female students, have been admitted.

“These students have been housed in student dormitories after being tested for Covid-19 and receiving vaccination cards,” Mir Jalili said.

“Currently, 94 non-Iranian students are studying at Yazd University of Medical Sciences.”

According to the UN, Iran has hosted millions of Afghan refugees in the past four decades. Following the recent Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, thousands of Afghans have flocked to the borders with Iran.

Envoy: Next Round of Iranian-Saudi Talks to Be Held in Baghdad

“We have had three rounds of talks with the Saudi side, so far, and the fourth round will be held now that the new Iranian administration has been formed,” Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA) quoted Iraj Masjedi as saying.

Iran and Saudi Arabia have had no diplomatic relations following the attack on the Saudi embassy in Tehran in January 2016 after Saudi Arabia executed Shia Muslim cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr. Tehran-Riyadh ties have been strained over several issues such as oil export polices, Yemen war and relations with the United States.

Masjedi added during talks with senior Iraqi officials and politicians, Tehran reiterated its unflinching support for Baghdad with regards to its reconstruction and development.

“We have strong bonds with Iraqi people, and we have officially announced that Iran will firmly stand by Iraq to help rebuild damaged areas,” the top diplomat added.

He underlined that Iran-Iraq trade has reached $13 billion a year, saying, “Iraq is grappling with an electricity [shortage] crisis, and Iran has been the only country to stand by Iraq throughout this crisis,” Masjedi added.

He noted Iran exports some 47 million cubic meters of natural gas to Iraq for its power stations.

“Iraq pays for these gas exports erratically,” he added.

The ambassador further said that tens of thousands of Iraqi students are studying at Iranian universities.

He also underlined that Iran stood by Iraq in the fight against the ISIS terrorist group, adding several Iranians were martyred on Iraqi soil in the war on terror.

On Monday, Iranian athletes snatched two gold medals and one silver at the Paralympic Games in Tokyo.

Iran FM: Nuclear Talks Real Only If Producing Tangible Results.

Amir Abdollahian dismissed the US recent threats against Iran over the nuclear negotiations, and said, “They’re like ‘our offer will not remain on the table forever’ and ‘if Iran does not negotiate, we have other options’. Such statements are old and tiresome. I told the European negotiators very clearly that the US must talk to the Iranian people politely, or their threats will yield them nothing”.

Amir Abdollahian was speaking to IRIB’s channel Two.

He also also brushed off foreign criticism of his move to stand in a place reserved for officials for a photo-op at the Baghdad summit.

Amir Abdollahian said he stood in Iran’s rightful place. Reports from the Saturday summit say the Iranian foreign minister skipped his Saudi counterpart and stood there, which made the UAE’s diplomat unhappy.

The foreign minister noted that he exchanged pleasantries with the Saudi FM, saying Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud told him Riyadh was waiting to hold talks with the new Iranian administration.

Amir Abdollahian added that French President Emmanuel Macron also asked for negotiations with him in Paris.

He spoke of the 25-year treaty between Iran and China, saying the deal is on top of Iran’s agenda and Tehran will seriously pursue the matter.

The foreign minister underlined that Iran considers striking similar agreements with Russia and India given their capacities.

On the upcoming Shanghai summit, Amir Abdollahian described the Shanghai Cooperation Organization as a huge capacity as it involves a population of 2.6 billion.

He said Iran, as an observer member of the organization, is making arrangements for President Ebrahim Raisi to attend the summit. He added that some good developments are going to happen at the summit as it’s the organization’s policy to expand economic cooperation with all members.

He also turned to Afghanistan, saying the US is to blame for all the problems in the country. The Islamic Republic supports a stable Afghanistan where people live in peace alongside neighbors.

He said that Afghanistan’s future must be decided by its own people, adding Iran is consulting with other countries like Pakistan over how to improve the situation in Afghanistan.

Dasht-e Naz Wildlife Reserve: Conserving Persian Fallow Deer

Dasht-e Naz wildlife reserve is home to 447 different plant species including European hornbeam, beech tree, alder and the Persian ironwood.

It was designated a protected area in 1967 and was named a wildlife reserve in 1975.

The endangered Persian fallow deer is kept at the reserve and the deer born in captivity are released to their natural habitat on the banks of Dez and Karoun rivers in western and southwestern Iran, every year.

Amid worrying reports on the environment, coming out of media outlets and social media, it is heartwarming and interesting to know the number of the endangered Persian fallow deer has increased by around 60 percent in Iran in less than two years.

The reserve had only 33 Persian fallow deer in 2018. But, thanks to conservation measures to prevent the animals from dying and being hunted by predators, their number now tops 50.

Since two years ago, round-the-clock patrol and protection teams have become active at the 55-hectare reserve. They have worked to best protect this endangered species including through the use of closed circuit cameras.

Dasht-e Naz wildlife reserve is the first breeding center for Persian fallow deer in Iran and has been established with the aim of reviving and increasing the population of the valuable species and protecting them.

“Evin Prison Guards Committed Offences”, Two Arrested

The leaked footage shows authorities at the Evin prison in Tehran mistreating inmates.

According to the report, six individuals have been prosecuted and interrogated so far, two have been detained and the rest have been released on bail.

The report concludes that one of the possible motives behind the release of the leaked video was to tarnish the Judiciary’s efforts to ameliorate the conditions of inmates and prisons in general.

The prosecutor general also said in the report that more time is needed for a thorough investigation into the case, adding complementary reports will be presented accordingly.

Recently, a video went viral on social media seemingly showing some prison guards manhandling prisoners and even mistreating one another.

The footage also showed some inmates hurting themselves and committing suicide.

Afterwards, the judiciary chief instructed the prosecutor general to immediately look into the issue and report the findings of the probe.

Accordingly, the prosecutor general formed a team of experts and stationed them at Evin.

Then another team was set up to inspect different parts of the penitentiary and talk face to face with a number of inmates as well prison authorities.

After the different dimensions of the issue were investigated, the prosecutor general presented its first report to the judiciary chief.

It was also found during the probe that some of the obvious offences evident in the footage had already been dealt with, and the individuals involved had been punished, removed from their posts or fired.

Chinese nationals sentenced in Iran over videos

The lawyer for the Chinese citizens confirmed the report. He refused to give further details. The lawyer however said the verdict is not final yet and that he planned to appeal it. The identities of the two Chinese nationals are unknown.

Recently a Chinese man posted alleged footage of his relationships with some Iranian girls on video sharing website YouTube.

Some 59 videos were published showing the girls, mostly under 18, with the man. The girls were said to have warned the Chinese national to remove the clips.

Some YouTube users also harshly criticized the postings, calling the Chinese man an “abuser”. Immediately after the clips were published, Iranian police arrested the man in the central city of Kashan.
