Satellite images show Iran dust layer developed along Syria-Iraq border

Air Pollution

The National Cartographic Center made the announcement after Iran’s Meteorological Organization issued an orange alert of storms from the west and southwest of the country.

Accordingly, the thick layer of dust reached Iran after blanketing large swathes of land in Iraq and Syria.

The phenomenon then affected many Iranian provinces and the capital Tehran.

The air quality was hazardous and visibility was very low throughout Friday and also on Saturday in Tehran when a white and grey fog engulfed the entire city.

This prompted global air quality monitoring company IQAir to declare Tehran the most polluted city in the world on the day, with a “very unhealthy” average real-time air quality index of 236.

On Sunday, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi ordered Iran’s Department of Environment to work with other relevant bodies and also neighboring countries to tackle and resolve the problem.

Raizi noted that the dust had disrupted people’s livelihoods and all relevant organizations must fulfill their responsibilities in this regard.

Data released by the Iranian government indicate that Tehran only enjoyed two days of “clean” air during the entirety of the Persian calendar year 1400 that ended on March 20.

Parkinson

He noted that the primary symptoms of Parkinson’s are tremors, slow motion of movement and difficulty in walking.

The neurosurgeon added that following the diagnosis of Parkinson’s, medical intervention starts in order to reduce the intensity of these symptoms and prevent the rapid advance of the disease.

While stressing that patients with advanced Parkinson’s undergo this type of surgery, the doctor said Shiraz is the only city after Tehran where the DBS procedure is used for treatment with the assistance of state-of-the-art tools and equipment.

In this technique, two electrodes are inserted deep into the patient’s brain without opening it, he said.

According to the surgeon, the function of the electrodes is then controlled by placing a battery in the chest.

Razmkan said 80 percent of the symptoms of Parkinson’s go away and medication decreases by 50 percent following the DBS procedure. April 11 has been named as the International Day of Parkinson’s

Karzai: Iran-Afghanistan longstanding ties must be preserved

Hamid Karzai

In a meeting with Iran’s Ambassador to Kabul Bahador Aminian, Karzai and the Iranian envoy discussed the long-standing and amicable relations between the two neighbors, the current developments in the region and images circulating on social media platforms purportedly showing Afghan refugees being mistreated in Iran.

The Iranian ambassador called the images unreal. He earlier warned that the images are part of a complicated plot hatched by Afghanistan’s former occupiers and the enemies of Iran.

The images began circulating soon after a stabbing attack against several clerics in the Iranian city of Mashhad last week which left two dead and another injured.

The assailant was an illegal Afghan refugee who had arrived in Iran via Pakistan and was residing in Mashhad.

Iran is a major destination for Afghans leaving their country amid worsening poverty and hunger. The Islamic Republic currently hosts over five million Afghan refugees. Some sources put the number at 8 million

The 70-year-old cancer survivor was pivotal in the opposition’s push to topple Khan’s government.

“$7bn in frozen Iranian assets to be released”

Dollar Rial

Speaking to the Islamic Republic News Agency’s reporter, Khatibzadeh said a framework has been put in place for the unlocking of the Iranian assets.

Meanwhile, Al Jazeera news channel cited an anonymous Iranian official as saying the assets will be soon released and will be deposited at a bank in Oman so that it will be transferred to Iran in due course.

Huge sums of assets belonging to the Islamic Republic of Iran are frozen outside of the country due to US sanctions. Iran has objected to the freezing of its assets and condemned the US bans repeatedly as oppressive and part of an economic war.

Earlier Tasnim News Agency reported a regional official, identified as “possibly Oman’s foreign minister”, will travel to Tehran on Tuesday to finalize the mechanism for the release of seven billion dollars in frozen Iranian assets.

According to the report, the framework for the release of Iranian assets is similar to the recent agreement with Britain for the transfer of some 470 million Euros in Iranian funds.

The amount was Britain’s debt to Iran, which was also transferred to Iran’s account through the Central Bank of Oman

Iran suspends controversial Miankaleh petrochemical project

Miankaleh petrochemical project

The department’s deputy for human environment Masood Alikhani, in a letter to the managing director of Amir Abad Petrochemical Plant in the northern Iranian Province of Mazandaran, said the permit to resume the project will hinge on complementary studies and authorization of the Department of Environment.

Alikhani also reiterated the necessity of employing environmental consultants and getting assistance from a local university in carrying out the studies.

He said these should cover the assessment of the ecological capacity of the area to construct petrochemical and water desalination units as well as other relevant projects.

The study, the official said, should also assess the effect of the desalination plant on the areas, managed by the Department of Environment and the marine ecosystem of the Caspian Sea, as well as the industrial swage and other pollutants from the petrochemical project, among other things.

“Issuance of the environmental clearance will hinge on the outcomes of the mentioned study and examination of them by the evaluation committee of the Department of Environment. Therefore, it is necessary that any executive operation before complementary studies and issuance of the environmental permit is avoided,” he said.

Earlier, the government spokesman had announced that officials “will not back down on the implementation of the project”, but will make sure all environmental authorizations are secured before going ahead.

Miankaleh is home to many species of birds and environmental activists believe it’s highly vital to the ecosystem of the region
