Disabled war veteran hoists Iranian flag underwater on Islamic Republic Day

A disabled veteran of Iran’s defense campaign against the Iraqi army under ex-dictator Saddam Hussein during the 1980s war has hoisted a national flag at the bottom of the sea to commemorate the Islamic Republic Day.

On April 1, 44 years ago, an Islamic republic was officially declared in the country based on the results of a referendum in which Iranians overwhelmingly voted for the establishment of that political system.

The referendum was held some two months after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, which toppled the US-backed Pahlavi monarchy in the country.
