Birjand Castle in eastern Iran (PHOTOS)

The adobe castle protected people against invaders, especially Turkmens, during the Safavid and Qajar eras.

Birjand Castle is a major tourist attraction in the city of Birjand in South Khorasan Province.

The mud and brick structure is 3,000 square meters in area and dates back to the Safavid era. It is said to have protected residents against invasion, especially by Turkmens, during the Safavid and Qajar eras.
