EU’s Schmid Due in Iran for Talks on JCPOA, Energy

Helga Maria Schmid, the secretary general of the European External Action Service, plans to pay an official visit to Tehran in November to discuss a range of issues with Iranian officials.

Speaking in a Saturday conference on non-proliferation in the Russian capital of Moscow, Schmid declared that she will visit Iran in November to discuss the nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers, officially known as Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Schmid said she also plans to confer with Iranian officials on energy issues, the Interfax reported.

Meanwhile, she emphasized Iran’s missiles are not a subject of discussions on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, and this issue should be discussed in a different format.

She also referred to the claims by US President Donald Trump about Iran’s non-compliance with the nuclear deal, and described it as a consequence of the US inner political situation.

“It cannot influence implementation of the agreement,” she stressed.

There is no alternative to the nuclear deal, and repudiating the deal would “negatively impact European security”, she was quoted as saying by Interfax news agency.

Brussels will do its utmost to preserve the landmark agreement, Schmid said.

Schmid also posted photos of her participation in the Moscow non-proliferation conference in a post in her Twitter, and said, “Clear message: Iran nuclear deal is working and delivering, this is why the EU will continue to support and protect.”
