Iranian daily slams invitation of Taliban ‘water war theorist’ to Tehran as ‘own goal’

Iran Water Crisis

In an article published on Thursday, Jomhouri-e Eslami noted Farooq has a history of distorting the 1973 Delta Treaty, that served as the basis for both country’s water rights from the Hirmand river, and manipulating contemporary history to deprive Iran of its rights.

Farooq has been selected as the keynote speaker for the Water for Peace conference by the UNESCO Chair in Water Recycling at the University of Tehran and is expected to be commemorated in the event.

The newspaper highlighted Azam’s long-standing efforts to deceive the Afghan public opinion regarding water rights, using the treaty as a tool to link bilateral cooperation to water issues.

He has made various controversial claims, including that Iran agreed to allow Afghanistan free use of Chabahar port, provided $2 billion in aid, built railways and roads for Afghanistan, and was willing to buy additional water, it added.

Jomhouri-e Eslami argued that honoring Azam in Tehran insults the Iranian nation and endorses Afghanistan’s human rights violations regarding water and the environment.

“Given the absence of a strategy in the country’s diplomatic framework for the water dispute between Iran and Afghanistan, and the likelihood that Farooq Azam may justify Afghanistan’s dam constructions in his speech at the University of Tehran, his selection as the keynote speaker for the conference is considered a diplomatic own goal in the fields of water diplomacy and media,” the newspaper concluded.

Many cities in Iran experience continued snow, rainfall

The Caspian coastal provinces, the southern slopes of the Alborz mountains, parts of the northwest, southwest, southeast, northeast, and central areas experience adverse weather conditions.

Snowfall is also expected in the highlands and the intensity of rainfall is expected to be higher in Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad, Bushehr, and Fars provinces.

The head of the National Weather Forecasting Center has warned of avalanche risks due to the recent heavy snowfall in the northwest and Alborz highlands.

A significant drop in temperature is expected across large parts of the country, posing a risk of frostbite.

Many cities in northern Iranian province of Gilan, including Masal, experienced the first snowfall of the year.

Fariborz Moradi, Director General of Gilan’s Road Maintenance and Transportation, reported a halt in snowfall in the Talesh Highlands, where snow has accumulated to 90 cm.

He said 175 km of roads have been cleared over the past 36 hours, but some routes in the region still remain closed due to severe blizzards and insufficient safety.

Iran, China urge immediate ceasefire in Gaza, Lebanon

Pezeshkian Xi

In a meeting on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in the Russian city of Kazan on Wednesday, Pezeshkian and Xi discussed a range of issues pertaining to the relations between Tehran and Beijing and the regional developments.

Hailing China as a friend and major trade partner of Iran, Pezeshkian expressed confidence that mutual cooperation can help stand against the Western countries’ totalitarianism.

The Iranian president denounced the unconditional supports from the US and a number of Western governments for the Zionist regime as the main threat to regional peace, saying Israel has crossed all red lines and has proved that it does not respect any humanitarian or legal principles by massacring innocent people and civilians.

Iran does not seek clashes and believes that wars would not benefit anybody, Pezeshkian added, but warned that any act of aggression will draw Iran’s firm and decisive response.

For his part, President Xi voiced China’s readiness to promote relations with Iran, stressing the need to strengthen mutual trust.

Lauding the constructive interaction between the two countries at the regional and international levels, the Chinese president said the two states can cooperate fruitfully in various fields.

Pointing to the worrying situation in the region, he described an immediate establishment of ceasefire as the key to de-escalation of tensions.

China believes that Iran makes the appropriate arrangements to create peace and stability in the region, President Xi added, calling for efforts to prevent the deterioration of clashes.

Pezeshkian says martyrdom of Safieddine opening new chapter in resistance against Israel

Masoud Pezeshkian

In a message on Wednesday night, Pezeshkian expressed condolences on the martyrdom of Saffiedine in an Israeli airstrike on Beirut.

The president extended his condolences to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, the Lebanese and Palestinian people, as well as Saffiedine’s family and his comrades in the resistance front, and all the freedom-loving people in the world.

Saffiedine, who was inspired by the teachings of Ashura, courageously dedicated his entire life to defending the oppressed people of Palestine and Lebanon as well as strengthening the resistance front, Pezeshkian added.

He noted that although Saffiedine’s martyrdom is a great loss for the axis of resistance and the Lebanese nation, it will definitely open a new chapter in the resistance and struggle against the Zionist occupiers.

The president also stated that the great martyr left behind brilliant legacies of resistance and fight against oppression and tyranny, which will continue to be inspiring.

Pezeshkian referred to the Zionist regime’s assassination of Hezbollah Leader Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah in September, stressing the Zionist enemy thought that it could stop the resistance by assassinating Nasrallah, but Hezbollah will continue to grow and has remained stronger than before, powerfully pursuing its goals and inflicting heavy blows to the occupiers.

Over 770 killed in 19 days of Israeli siege on Gaza’s Jabalia: Gov’t media office

It said in a statement that more than 200 civilians, including women, have been “kidnapped”, and dozens more remain missing amid communications issues.

“We express our fear that they may have been executed in the field, as has been done on many previous occasions,” it added.

More than 100,000 wounded and sick people in the northern parts of Gaza are in “urgent need” of assistance, which remains elusive due to the Israeli military’s destruction of the health system and four hospitals in the area, according to the office.

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres expressed deep concern Wednesday for civilians suffering under Israel’s siege in north Gaza.

“People suffering under the ongoing Israeli siege in North Gaza are rapidly exhausting all available means for their survival,” Guterres wrote on X.

Emphasizing the need to protect civilians and ensure they receive the necessary humanitarian assistance, he reminded Israel of its obligations under international law, saying “that’s what international humanitarian law requires”.

The Israeli army has intensified its assault in northern Gaza amid a suffocating siege that has left tens of thousands of people without food and water.

The onslaught, which began on Oct. 5, is the latest episode in Israel’s brutal offensive that has killed nearly 42,800 people, mostly women and children, and injured more than 100,400 since last October following an attack by the Palestinian resistance group Hamas.

The Israeli onslaught has displaced nearly the entire population of the territory amid an ongoing blockade that has led to severe shortages of food, clean water and medicine.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its actions in Gaza.

Iran urges UN Security Council to force Israel into stopping aggression in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria

Iravani made the remarks during a Security Council meeting on Syria on Wednesday, amid deadly Israeli airstrikes on the Arab country as well as the regime’s bloody war on Gaza and Lebanon.

“We once again urge the Council to take swift, decisive action to compel the Israeli regime to end its aggression and atrocity crimes in Gaza, Lebanon, and Syria, and to ensure full compliance with international law and relevant UN Security Council resolutions. The time for action is now,” he said.

“Now, more than ever, this regime poses a grave and undeniable threat to international peace and security. Its relentless acts of terror are pushing the region to the brink of full-scale war. ”

Since early October 2023, Israel has killed at least 42,700 people in the besieged Gaza and 2,500 others in Lebanon.

Over the same period, the usurping entity has launched more than 116 aerial assaults on Syrian territory in blatant violation of international law and the UN Charter.

Iravani stated that Israel’s terrorist attacks on Syria have claimed the lives of over 100 civilians, including 12 children, and caused widespread destruction of civilian infrastructure such as schools, hospitals, and airports.

“The occupying regime is deliberately pursuing a systematic policy to cripple the infrastructure of the Syrian Arab Republic, exacerbating Syria’s security challenges and undermining critical humanitarian efforts,” he added.

The Iranian envoy also expressed deep concerns about Israel’s blatant disregard for red lines and shameless strikes on humanitarian convoys, facilities, and relief workers.

“These actions are flagrant violations of international law … The protection and support the regime receives from the United States emboldens its continued acts of violence across the region, allowing it to act without consequence,” he emphasized.

He further called for respect for Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in order to ensure lasting peace and stability in the country and the entire region.

Additionally in his remarks, Iravani highlighted the suffering of the Syrian people amid economic instability, and foreign occupation and terrorism, saying the nation is also subject to hostile policies of the Western countries.

The humanitarian situation remains dire in Syria, which is grappling with a sharp decline in donor contributions for UN programs and the influx of refugees from neighboring Lebanon, he noted.

The Iranian envoy also assailed the United States for its use of sanctions as collective punishment, its politicizing of humanitarian aid, and obstruction of international efforts to support Syria’s reconstruction process.

“The United States and its allies continue to pursue their failed policy of inhumane, unilateral sanctions, effectively using them as a tool for the collective punishment of the Syrian people,” he said.

“Such harmful policies and practices have only prolonged the conflict and worsened the suffering of the Syrian people,” he added.

Iran dismisses claim of embassy involvement anti-Israeli attack by Hezbollah

Esmail Baghaei

Baghaei rejected a claim by the spokesperson of Israel’s army that the embassy of Iran in Lebanon was involved in a military operation by Hezbollah against the regime.

He described the allegation as unfounded, a lie and deception on part of the Israeli regime, the ministry’s website reported.

The spokesman referred to the continuation of the Israeli regime’s aggression and crimes against regional countries over the past year and warned against any assault on Iran’s interests.

His remarks came after the Israeli army’s spokesman Daniel Hagari accused Iran of sending “suitcases of cash and gold” to the Iranian embassy in Beirut, alleging that the money goes “directly to Hezbollah”.

Nuclear chief dismisses concerns about potential Israeli attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities

Iran Nuclear Program

Asked about the Israeli regime’s threat of military attack on Iran’s nuclear sites, Mohammad Eslami told reporters on the sidelines of a weekly cabinet meeting on Wednesday that such hostile threats have always been posed against the country.

He gave an assurance that the country’s nuclear facilities are protected vigilantly against all threats amid the Israeli regime’s rhetoric of military action.

Iran’s defense and security capabilities have always been maintained at a level to deal with every threat vigilantly, Eslami stated.

He added that the country’s nuclear facilities are under protection and safeguarded in accordance with the defensive arrangements.

The official warned that any hostile action against Iran’s nuclear sites would be met with a “crushing response”.

The Zionist regime issued threats of an attack on Iran after the Islamic Republic launched a retaliatory missile strike on Israel. This was in response to Israel’s assassination of former Hamas political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, in Tehran, as well as an Iranian military advisor and Hezbollah leader Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah during an air raid in Southern Beirut, Lebanon.

Tehran has warned that any attack by Israel will be met with a severe response, “beyond the Israeli regime’s imagination”.

Iran strongly condemns Israel’s assassination of Nasrallah successor

Iranian Foreign Ministry

The Iranian Foreign Ministry offered condolences and congratulations on the martyrdom of Safieddine and a group of his companions during a criminal attack by the Zionist regime.

It said in a statement that Safieddine was one of the leaders and founders of the Lebanese resistance and one of the close and loyal companions of Martyr Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah, who spent his whole honorable life pursuing the freedom of al-Quds and the defense of Lebanon’s honor and territorial integrity against the aggression and crimes of the Zionist occupation regime, and he was finally martyred on this holy path.

The foreign ministry also strongly condemns this unforgivable crime committed by the Zionists and emphasizes the direct complicity of the US government and other governments supporting the occupying regime in this crime.

“Without a doubt, the martyrdom of the leaders of the resistance will not weaken an iota the determination, faith and will of their leaders, the zealous fighters of the resistance front, and the free Muslim nations of the region to fight against the occupation, oppression and aggression of the Zionist regime until the end of the sinister phenomenon of the Zionist occupation and the realization of the rights of the Palestinian people and region nations, especially the fundamental right to self-determination,” it added.

Hezbollah has confirmed the martyrdom of Safieddine, one of the candidates possibly slated to take charge of the group following the assassination of Nasrallah.

Hezbollah said in a statement Wednesday that Safieddine was martyred in an Israeli airstrike, without specifying the date.

“His Eminence Seyyed Hashem Safieddine has devoted most of his life to serving Hezbollah, the Islamic Resistance and its society,” the Lebanese group’s statement added.

The group has yet to name a successor to Nasrallah.

Iranian president, Egypt’s Sisi hold landmark meeting on sidelines of BRICS summit

Pezeshkian and Sisi

They talked about the most important regional issues and also weighed plans to stop the war on Gaza and Lebanon and prevent a spread of clashes to the other parts of the region.

Highlighting his administration’s policy of rapport and efforts to strengthen friendly relations with the other nations, Pezeshkian stressed that Iran is not seeking war and conflict at all.

Deploring the Western governments’ double standards and their support for the Zionist regime’s atrocities, the Iranian president warned that any Israeli mistake will certainly draw Iran’s painful response.

He added the Zionist regime might intend to harm Iran, but the retaliatory harm that Israel will receive will be “beyond imagination”.

For his part, the Egyptian president described unity as the main pillar of Muslim power.

There are several diverse components of power, the most important of which is unity and solidarity among Muslims, President Sisi stated.

He also stressed the need for cooperation to end the war on Gaza and Lebanon and avert a spread of clashes to the other parts of the region.

The Egyptian president also called for the advancement of issues on the basis of friendship and mutual understanding, noting that he has never adopted a stance against Iran throughout the years that the relations between Cairo and Tehran have been strained.

Sisi finally urged his Iranian counterpart to rectify the incorrect image of Iran that has been displayed in the region and world over the past 40 years.
