Poland Commemorates Iranian Hospitality in WWII

During the ceremony, participants laid flowers at the “monument of gratitude”, a memorial to the people of Iran for generously welcoming over 120,000 Polish refugees escaping from the Soviet Union with the Anders Army in 1942.

The daughter of General Władysław Anders – commander of the 2nd Corps and a national hero – was also at the ceremony with a number of veterans, some of whom were kids at the time of the influx of refugees to Iran.

Heading a high-ranking delegation, the Iranian minister is in Poland for an official visit as part of efforts to boost bilateral relations between Tehran and Warsaw.

The Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, separately met Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Tehran. The Leader also attended a graduation ceremony at Imam Hossein University. Ayatollah Khemenei’s remarks on the three occasions were widely covered by Iranian newspapers on Tuesday.

The deal on Chabahar port, a strategic port city in south-east of Iran, was also a top story. The deal was signed between Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani, his Afghan counterpart, and the Indian PM in Tehran.

The reactions to the awards won by Iranian artists in Cannes Festival, and the poor coverage of the success by the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) were also highlighted.

The Assembly of Experts was also set to choose its new chairperson during its inaugural session on Tuesday, and the probable candidates and related developments were focused on by a number of newspapers.

Iran, Bosnia agree to expand banking cooperation

The Head of Bosnia’s Central Bank voiced his pleasure in the removal of the sanctions imposed against Iran, saying, “The Islamic Republic of Iran, because of its important status in the Middle East, has a special place for us.”

In a relevant development in February, Bosnian Foreign Minister Igor Crnadak said that his country is determined to revive its former economic ties with post-sanctions Iran.

Speaking at a joint press conference in Tehran with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif, Crnadak said the two sides have always had great ties and that today, more than ever, they are determined to expand on that.

“We discussed many ways for economic cooperation. We believe good economic relations could also lead to greater diplomatic ties. We are delighted to have our Iranian partners involved in our infrastructure development projects. This will happen soon,” he added.

The Bosnian Foreign Minister said the two sides could also cooperate in travel and tourism, adding that his country will fully support private travel agencies to this end.

“We also discussed common challenges, joint educational and cultural programs, as well as introduction of easier visa programs in order to normalize bilateral relations,” he noted.

Zarif, for his part, referred to the relations between Tehran and Sarajevo, and added that the two sides are willing to expand bilateral ties in various fields including political, economics and banking.

Iran Blasts Israel for Defying Chemical Weapons Disarmament

“Israel has no excuse to refrain from joining the Chemical Weapons Convention,” Araqchi said, addressing the 14th meeting of the CWC Asian member-states in Tehran on Monday.

The Iranian deputy foreign minister underlined that Israel is a serious threat to the region and international peace and security, especially because it shrugs off joining disarmament mechanisms and non-proliferation treaties.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran as a responsible and committed member of this international convention has resolutely decided to join the international disarmament treaties, especially those related to the weapons of mass destruction,” Araqchi added.

The 14th meeting of the National Authorities of Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) in Asia kicked off in Tehran on Monday.

Representatives from 25 Asian countries are attending the 3-day meeting.

Following the arrangements made between Iran’s Secretariat of National Authority of the Chemical Weapons Convention and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, the 14th meeting of National Authorities of State Parties in Asia is being held in Tehran from 23 to 25 May 2016.

This regional meeting of National Authorities hosted by Iran aims to consolidate the country’s active role in the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and its successful run is expected to promote Iran’s position among other state parties to the Convention.

54 representatives from 25 Asian countries are participating in the meeting where important issues in the national implementation of the CWC will be discussed.

7th World Islamic Forum Kicks Off in Yazd

Nearly 100 guests from 35 countries are attending the two-day international event. The theme of the Forum is “Strategic Communications: Reference Values, Institutions and Individuals.”  The Forum is being supported by Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC).

The reason why this Iranian city has been chosen for holding the Forum is that Yazd is the first Muslim Adobe City and also second Historical World City, according to UNESCO.

Bringing global Islamic thinktanks closer together and discussing the issue of a world free from violence and extremism are among the important goals of the Forum.

Through a proposal to the United Nations General Assembly last year, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani called for an updated version of the 2013 WAVE resolution, which seeks a world free from violence and extremism. The proposal was warmly welcomed by the UN.
