Spokesman Denies Reports on Taliban Leader’s Iran Visit

“Relevant authorities in the Islamic Republic [of Iran] deny that such a person crossed into Pakistan from the Iranian borders on such a date,” Jaberi Ansari said in his weekly press conference, as reported by Iranian media and translated by IFP.

He also referred to the killing of the Taliban leader, stressing that “the Islamic Republic of Iran welcomes any move towards peace and stability in Afghanistan.”

Mansour, who was elevated to the leadership of the Taliban after a bitter power struggle, was killed on Saturday May 21 in a remote part of Pakistan’s western Balochistan province.

The raid was the first known US assault on a top Afghan Taliban leader on Pakistani soil, and dealt a heavy blow to the militant group, which had expanded its operations under Mansour’s guidance.

Riyadh Hindering Iranians’ Hajj Pilgrimage: Spokesman

“With the continuation of Saudi Arabia’s obstructionism on the issues of the security of (Iranian) pilgrims, transportation and issuing visas, the subject of Hajj has been hindered practically,” the spokesman said at his weekly press conference in Tehran on Monday May 23.

He also slammed Riyadh for adopting an “intensification of tensions” as its main policy, stressing that Tehran, on the contrary, seeks stability and calm in the region.

There has been an interruption in Iranian trips to Saudi Arabia for Hajj after Riyadh severed its diplomatic ties with Tehran in January.

While Iran insists that the safety of travelers to Saudi Arabia must be ensured, given a disaster that killed many Iranian pilgrims in last year’s Hajj, the Saudis are dragging their feet over facilitating the trip for the upcoming Hajj season.

More than 460 Iranians were among the thousands of pilgrims who died on September 24, 2015, in a crush in Mina, near Mecca. The incident marked the worst ever tragedy during Hajj.

Iran Marks 34th Anniversary of Liberation of Khorramshahr

Photo: Iranian forces celebrate the liberation of Khorramshahr at the city’s Grand Mosque, May 24, 1982.

Iranian forces recaptured the southwestern city in a landmark operation code-named Beit ol-Moqaddas.

Iran launched the operation in April 1982 and liberated Khorramshahr on May 24 of the same year. In retaking the city, the Iranians captured some 19,000 troops from the Iraqi army.

Some 6,000 Iraqi forces were also killed and thousands of others injured during the operation.

During an open session of Iran’s Parliament on Monday, speaker Ali Larijani said, “The liberation of Khorramshahr marked a turning point in the military history of the revolutionary Iranian nation.”

The imposed war began in 1980, a year after the Islamic Revolution, with Iraq invading Iran with the support of major powers and their allies in the region.

The war drew to a close in August 1988, when Iran accepted UN Security Council Resolution 598, which declared Saddam as the initiator of the conflict.

During the eight years of war, Iraqi forces received economic, military and intelligence support from more than 20 countries, led by the United States.

Stained-Glass Museum in Tehran

The property of the museum, with an area of over 1000m2, dates back to the Qajar period, and was originally owned by a man named Dr. Shaqaqi.

This museum is only the second of its type in the world, and contains a huge collection of Iranian stained-glass windows.

Stained-glass is an art which was imported to Iran from Eastern Europe, India, and China. It was soon imbued with a strong local flavor, however. Stained-glass windows displayed in this museum include paintings of human figures, birds and flowers, animals, geometrical figures, historical buildings, urban landscapes, nature, Quranic calligraphy, religious figures, courtiers and ordinary citizens.

Food as Recreation in Tehran: Study

In an interview with Mehr, Majid Abhari explained that the study included public and recreational areas, such as parks; tourist attractions like the Persian Gulf Lake; and riversides. The study surveyed families visiting these areas, and was conducted by the Department of Social and Behavioural Sciences Foundation. It revealed that 65% of them considered eating in restaurants and fast food outlets, as well as eating homemade food outdoors (especially during the night), to be their favourite pastime.

“People tend to spend time preparing food to be eaten in a place outside the home because they believe it to be a very wholesome form of entertainment, as a result of which they can enjoy an intimate family gathering. This is their main goal,” he explained.

“The costs of travelling outside the city, as well as problems like the lack of consecutive days off work, transportation, and accommodation were among the reasons for which some families preferred not to travel.”

According to Abhari, creating a culture of spending leisure time with family in local picnic spots and parks was seen as an appropriate way to spend leisure time.

“Children and teenagers showed the biggest interest in ready-to-eat foods. They preferred to eat at restaurants with their family, a fact that points to lifestyle changes,” the professor added.

Iran and New Zealand to Boost Agricultural Ties

Hojjati, who was speaking at the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Iran and New Zealand, said “Fortunately, a good deal of cooperation has been fostered between the two countries in the agriculture sector as well as in trade of goods and products.”

“Fruitful measures will be taken in order to strengthen relations between the private sectors of the two sides, and to exchange knowledge and technology with New Zealand,” highlighted Hojjati, adding “Also, plans will be made for good cooperation in areas of education, scientific research as well as emerging issues and capabilities of both countries.”

He went on to express his hope that “Existing ties between the two parties in livestock will continue.”

“The newly signed document pertains to numerous agricultural fields, including commercial, educational and promotional ones, as well as strengthening the private sector and conducting joint ventures,” the official concluded.

No More Barrier to Trade with Iran in Euros: Diplomat

“Restrictions on our country’s banking transactions in euros have been removed,” Hamid Baeedinejad, the director general for political and international affairs at Iran’s Foreign Ministry said in a post at a social network.

Hailing the developments in Iran’s financial interaction in recent days, the diplomat said India’s move to pay the first installment of its outstanding oil debts to Iran via an account in Turkey demonstrates that restrictions on transferring large sums of money and exchanging that money, for example Indian rupee to euro, have been lifted.

According to a recent report by the Business Standard, Indian refiners have cleared part of their $6.5 billion debt to Iran in euros through Turkey’s Halkbank.

It was the first payment to Iran by India since the removal of anti-Tehran sanctions.

The sanctions were terminated after Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) on July 14, 2015 finalized a comprehensive nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), and started implementing it on January 16.

Iran Eyes Attracting 2.5 Million Chinese Tourists Annually

Speaking in a televised program, Soltanifar, also a vice-president, said the country seeks to increase the current number of 150,000 Chinese tourists visiting Iran per annum to some 2.5 million visitors.

While Iran needs to prepare the necessary infrastructures for a huge rise in the number of foreign tourists, China has expressed willingness to invest in Iran and construct hotels and restaurants, he added.

Noting that China sends more than 120 million tourists to the other countries every year, Soltanifar said Iran attaches great significance to attracting tourists from the populous country.

The top official had announced earlier that Tehran has drawn up a long-term plan to boost revenues from the tourism industry to $30 billion.

According to a road map, Iran will be hosting 20 million tourists annually by 2025, generating a $30 billion income, Soltanifar said in March.

He noted that the country has the potential to satisfy the needs of all types of tourists, given its diverse climate, the huge number of historical sites, pilgrimage destinations, and great opportunities for health tourism.

According to Soltanifar, the costs of medical treatment in Iran are one fifth of those in European countries.

With a large number of attractive natural and historical sites, Iran is one of the most favorable destinations for tourists.

More foreign tourists are starting to arrive in Iran after a lasting nuclear deal between Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) came into force and nuclear-related anti-Iran sanctions were terminated in January.

India PM in Tehran to Strike Agreement on Chabahar Port Development

Modi landed in Tehran on Sunday for a two-day visit with Iranian officials. He was welcomed by Iran’s Economy Minister Ali Tayebnia at Tehran’s Mehrabad Airport.

He is expected to meet Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Monday morning. The two heads of state will discuss the enhancement of trade, economic, cultural and political cooperation.

During Modi’s stay, Iran and India are set to sign 14 cooperation agreements, including an agreement to develop the southern Iranian port of Chabahar, which lies in the Gulf of Oman.

Modi, who is on his first official visit to Iran, will also meet with the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

Meantime, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani will travel to Tehran to join Rouhani and Modi for the signature of the agreement on Chabahar Port.

Iran and India agreed to develop the strategic Chabahar Port in 2003. The project, however, was suspended following the imposition of sanctions against Iran over the country’s nuclear program.

In May 2014, India and Iran signed an MoU to jointly develop the port once the international sanctions against Iran were lifted. Iran received sanctions relief after its nuclear deal with six world powers took effect in January this year.

The Chabahar route will allow Indian goods to reach Afghanistan via the Iranian port of without crossing Pakistan’s territory.

Chabahar is located in the Gulf of Oman on the border with Pakistan. It is Iran’s closest and best access point to the Indian Ocean and Iran has devised serious plans to turn it into a transit hub for immediate access to markets in the northern part of the Indian Ocean and Central Asia.
