Hashd al-Shaabi Releases Details of US Attack on Bases in Iraq

Hours after the US airstrike on Kataib Hezbollah positions on Sunday night, the PMU senior director, Jawad Kazem al-Rabi’ei, said dozens of forces have been killed and injured in the attack.

“Today (Sunday), the commander of Al-Jazeera operations unit and the 45th and 46th Hashd al-Shaabi brigades were targeted in US drone strikes,” he said.

The airstrikes took place in the Al-Mazra’a area, inside the Iraqi territory near the border with Syria, Rabi’ei added.

“The rescue operations are underway and the injured and martyrs are being relocated in cooperation with relief teams from al-Qa’im town,” the commander noted.

A source said that five people have been killed in the American air raid, including a commander of Hashd al-Shaabi and two of his deputies, the deputy commander of the 45th Brigade, and a photographer.

Several unidentified UAVs targeted the Kataib Hezbollah’s bases on Sunday night near the border town of Qa’im in Iraq’s Al Anbar Governorate.

The US Department of Defence also issued a statement shortly after the attack, confirming its military had targeted Hashd al-Shaabi positions near Iraq’s al-Qa’im city.

It came after a barrage of 30 or more rockets was fired on Friday at the K1 Iraqi military base in Kirkuk, an oil-rich region north of Baghdad, killing a US civilian contractor and wounding four US service members as well as Iraqi security forces, according to the Pentagon.

Since late October, several mortar and rocket attacks have targeted the American positions in Iraq, to where the US has deployed 5,200 troops.

Military sources say some have been killed and dozens wounded in the western Iraqi base.

Pentagon has released a statement claiming that the attacks targeted facilities including weapon depot and command and control centres.

“In response to repeated Kataib Hezbollah attacks on Iraqi bases that host Operation Inherent Resolve coalition forces, US forces have conducted precision defensive strikes that will degrade Kataib Hezbollah’s ability to conduct future attacks,”

Pentagon Spokesperson Jonathan Hoffman said in the statement.

A US official said on Friday the Washington was looking into the possible involvement of Kataib Hezbollah in a rocket attack on an Iraqi military base that killed a US civilian contractor and injured some service members and Iraqi staff.

Iraqi sources say Washington has put all its military bases across the country on high alert in the wake of its military attacks on PMU positions.

Kataib Hezbollah’s leader Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis has been designated a terrorist by Washington. His group has bases in Syria as well.

Iran-Russia-China Naval Drills Wrap Up in Oman Sea

The preplanned scenario consisted of receiving distress calls from two merchant ships attacked by pirates while heading from Persian Gulf to international waters.

It also included identification of and search for the operation zone by an Iranian SH helicopter, and the Iranian Frigate Alborz dividing the warships deployed in the operation zone into three groups composed of Iranian, Russian and Chinese units.

Firefighting operations were also carried out during the rescue mission.

At the end of the operation, one of the rescued ships was tugged for drilling purposes by a Russian tugboat.

Iranian, Russian and Chinese joint naval drills began on 27 December in the north of Indian Ocean and the Sea of Oman amid increasing tensions between Iran and the US, which escalated following the US withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal.

Education Minister Makes Surprise Visit to Christian School in Tehran

The ministerial visit to “Aras” elementary and high school on Sunday morning came two days before the beginning of the new Christian year.

In the visit, the Education Minister congratulated the students, the school staff and their families on the birth anniversary of Prophet Jesus (PBUH) and the new year 2020.

Presenting flowers to the students of the Christian school, mainly comprised of Armenian girls, Haji-Mirzaei said the future of Iran would be shaped by today’s students.

Asked by the minister about the bilingual education in the school, one of the teachers explained that students learn lessons in the Persian language in all classes, but are free to speak the Armenian language with each other without any problem.

In a meeting with the teachers at the school’s office, Haji-Mirzaei said his Ministry has established a task force on the revision and updating of theology at the Christian schools.

Highlighting the exemplary and peaceful co-existence of religions in Iran, the minister assured the Armenian Diocese of Iran that there is no discrimination between the Muslim and Christian schools in the Islamic Republic.

FM Zarif to Leave Tehran for Moscow Sunday

Iran’s Foreign Minister Leaves Turkey for Russia

According to Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyyed Abbas Mousavi, Zarif will visit Moscow in order to attend a new round of “regular consultations” with Russian officials.

During his trip, the Iranian top diplomat will discuss bilateral ties and the most recent international developments, Mousavi added.

The trip will come a few days ahead of his planned trip to New York, where he is going to take part in a UN Security Council meeting on multilateralism.

His trip to New York hinges on the US administration’s issuance of visa, Mousavi said on Sunday.

The visit will be made at the invitation of Vietnam, which will become the rotating president of the UN Security Council.

Iran Develops Homegrown Micromanipulator for Infertility Treatment

Precise intracellular injections are nowadays widely used in techniques for infertility diagnosis and treatment.

Intracellular injection or taking cytoplasmic samples require special devices capable of controlling different scales of movement speed and accuracy. Such apparatus can convert the movements of an operator into high precision movements with certain degrees of freedom, resulting in absolute accuracy at the micrometer scale. The cell Injection and manipulation devices are used for precise operations on a sample under a microscope.

Micromanipulators are mainly employed in intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), a technique performed as an additional part of an IVF (in vitro fertilization) treatment cycle where a single sperm is injected into each egg to assist fertilization.

Micromanipulators are also utilized in microbiology, research on human, animal and plant cells, stem cell research, genetics studies and breeding programs, optical device industry, micro-lens arrays, optical tweezers, micro-assembly technologies, nanotechnology, and microelectronics.

The foreign micromanipulators are sold at a cost of between $40,000 and $60,000. Importing the device from abroad would also incur an additional cost, as much as 20 to 50 percent of price of the machine. Moreover, the after-sales service would incur even more expenses on the medical centres.

Since the micromanipulators used in Iran have been imported from foreign countries, only the research and medical centres with great financial capabilities were the main customers of such sophisticated device.

In order to address the problem, Iran Biotech Fund –a fund established under the auspices of the Iranian Vice Presidency for Science and Technology- made an investment in a program to design and manufacture a homegrown micromanipulator with the purpose of supporting the local industries.

Iran Biotech Fund offered expert advices about the business fields and also financed part of the program during a 2-year plan to design and manufacture the homegrown device.

Finally, the Iranian researchers at the Sharif University of Technology managed to manufacture a micromanipulator which is half the price of the foreign device.

For a brief review of Iran’s achievements in various fields of science and technology, check the book “Science and Technology in Iran: A Brief Review – 2019

The Iranian research team has gained the technical know-how and the necessary practical experience to develop the key technologies used in micromanipulators, such as hyper-accurate movement technology, piezoelectricity, and servo control. Accordingly, the indigenous production of such device in Iran would face no technical risk.

At present, only Germany, the UK, Japan and the US have the technical know-how to produce micromanipulators.

Traditional Seafaring in Iran Revived after 50 Years

Traditional Seafaring in Iran Revived after 50 Years

On Saturday, December 28, 2019, seafarers managed to launch a wind-powered boat.

Seafaring with sail boats in Iran dates back three thousand years, according to the Iranian Ports and Shipping Organization. However, the practice has begun to slip into oblivion over the past 50 years as wind-powered launches have lost their popularity.

Ali Parsa, the author of the book “The Sails of the South,” drew on the cooperation and experience of the local community to revive seafaring through sail boats as part of the country’s intangible heritage.

He was able to make locals interested in traditional seafaring in the port city of Kong in Hormozgan province. On Saturday morning, a wind-powered launch was made seaworthy fifty years after traditional seafaring began to lose its appeal.

Also present at the launching ceremony was Captain Abdorrahman Babo, the last generation of traditional seafarers.

Locals were also happy to see a wind-powered launch was made seaworthy. They also performed traditional Iranian seafaring rituals as the vessel was launched at the Persian Gulf.

Iran Urges US to Leave Region on 3rd Day of Drills with China, Russia

“Today, the era of American free action in the region is over, and they (US forces) must leave the region gradually,” Rear Admiral Khanzadi told reporters on Sunday on the sidelines of a joint naval exercise of Iran, Russia and China, which is underway in the Sea of Oman and the northern parts of the Indian Ocean.

“We believe that regional security does not require the presence of those (foreign) countries, and that regional countries themselves can ensure security together,” he added.

The Iranian Navy commander also expressed hope that more regional states would join Iran in the efforts to ensure security.

“We believe that maritime security definitely needs collective action,” Khanzadi added.

He went on to say that friends of Iran and those favoring regional security have welcomed the joint naval drill, while the US and its proxies who seek to impose inappropriate security arrangements on the region would receive “significant messages” from the war game.

Iran, Russia and China are holding a four-day joint naval exercise, dubbed Marine Security Belt, in the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Oman.

The war game comes amid US efforts to woo countries into a maritime coalition for patrols in the Persian Gulf, which have received lukewarm welcome from its allies.

Iran Slams France’s Stance on Iranian, French Detainees

Seyyed Abbas Mousavi made the reaction on Sunday when asked about the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs’ move to summon the Iranian ambassador to Paris and its recent statement.

Mousavi said, “The French Foreign Ministry’s statement about an Iranian national is an interventionist measure, and we deem that France’s request lacks legal basis, because the concerned individual (Ms. Adelkhah) is an Iranian citizen and has been taken into custody on a charge of ‘committing an act of espionage’, while her attorney has been informed of details of the case, and her case is being handled by the Judiciary.”

On a French citizen who is in custody on a charge of “assembly and collusion against national security”, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman said, “He has had access to consular services several times, and his lawyer is informed about his charges and is in contact with the Judiciary authorities.”

“The smear campaigns could not prevent the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Judiciary from dealing with these cases, particularly concerning the security charges against those two individuals,” Mousavi concluded.

Adelkhah, a 60-year-old anthropologist and researcher at Sciences Po’s Center for International Studies (CERI) in Paris, and her colleague Roland Marchal were arrested in Iran in June on espionage charge.
