UK Ambassador Returns to Iran, Calls for Bilateral Talks

UK Ambassador Returns to Iran, Calls for Bilateral Talks

“I have recently returned from London to Tehran. It was an important trip that was planned some time ago,” Macaire said in an Instagram video posted on Thursday in Farsi.

He added that during the visit, he had meetings with Britain’s Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Dominic Raab and other senior officials and discussed ways to advance issues that are important to Iran and Britain.

Iranian media said on January 15 that the British envoy had left Tehran for London a few days after his brief detention. Macaire’s departure has taken place with prior notice and based on diplomatic protocol.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Abbas Araqchi later said Tehran has sternly warned the British ambassador for attending an “illegal” gathering and advised him to avoid such a behavior.

“We summoned the ambassador and he was reprimanded severely,” Araqchi said.

He added that the Iranian Foreign Ministry later issued a statement warning that in case of repetition of such a behavior, the ministry will adopt measures tougher than just summoning the ambassador.

Macaire further said in the video posting that Britain wanted to cooperate with Iran, France, Germany, Russia and China as the remaining signatories to a 2015 nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), after the US unilateral withdrawal from it.

US President Donald Trump, a stern critic of the landmark deal, unilaterally pulled Washington out of the JCPOA in May 2018, and unleashed the “toughest ever” sanctions against the Islamic Republic in defiance of global criticism in an attempt to strangle the Iranian oil trade.

On January 5, Iran took a final step in reducing its commitments, and said it would no longer observe any operational limitations on its nuclear industry, whether concerning the capacity and level of uranium enrichment, the volume of stockpiled uranium or research and development.

In response to the US move, Tehran has so far rowed back on its nuclear commitments five times in compliance with Articles 26 and 36 of the JCPOA, but stressed that its retaliatory measures will be reversible as soon as Europe finds practical ways to shield the mutual trade from the US sanctions.

The British diplomat further added that his country seeks to use the dispute resolution mechanism in the nuclear deal — which Britain, France and Germany triggered last month — to find a path forward in order to be able to “allay international concerns about Iran’s nuclear program and also allay Iran’s concerns about the economic benefits” of the JCPOA.

He also reiterated London’s full commitments to the JCPOA and a non-dollar direct payment channel — officially called the Instrument in Support of Trade Exchanges (INSTEX) — aimed at facilitating trade with Iran in the face of US sanctions even after Britain’s official withdrawal from the European Union.

“In recent weeks, we held important talks with Iranian officials on a number of other issues, including the danger of lack of stability in Iraq and the region, support for families of the victims of the downed Ukrainian plane and some important mutual issues like trade and visa,” Macaire said.

Defence Ministry Helping Iranian Carmakers against Sanctions

Defense Ministry Helping Iranian Carmakers against Sanctions

Brigadier General Amir Hatami paid a visit to Iran Khodro factory on February 5 at the invitation of the Ministry of Industry, Mine and Trade, and visited an exhibition of self-sufficiency in the car components.

During the visit, the Defence Minister lauded the Iranian automaker for the continuous manufacturing of cars in spite of the foreign sanctions, saying the Iranian defence industries have begun to assist the country’s automotive sector.

Highlighting the great technological capacities of Iran’s defence industry, the general said efforts are underway to utilize the defence technologies in order to resolve the problems in the automotive industry.

Denouncing the sanctions that the hegemonic powers have imposed on Iran’s defence industry over the past four decades, the minister said Iran’s defence industries have gained the experience of turning the threats into opportunities and have “shattered the dam of cruel sanctions” by manufacturing more than 3,300 products.

The defence industry has rushed to help the Iranian carmakers since a year ago, Hatami added, saying such cooperation has resulted in the production of various automobile components with modern technologies.

The Iranian defence experts and knowledge-based companies have managed to supply the automakers with many sensitive auto parts such as turbocharger, anti-lock braking system, electronic control units, various types of sensors, safety belt, and airbag, the minister noted.

“The Defence Ministry would by no means get involved in the production of the components and systems which could be manufactured by the private sector,” Brigadier General Hatami emphasized.

He further highlighted the Defence Ministry’s efforts to ensure national calm and security, and described the supports for the automakers or any other industry facing the cruel sanctions as a duty.

At the conclusion of the visit, the Defence Ministry and the Ministry of Industry, Mine and Trade signed a cooperation agreement on the domestic production of auto parts in Iran.

Iran Sympathizes with Thailand after Fatal Shooting

Iran Condemns US Oil Deal with Syrian Kurdish Group

In a message on Sunday, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyyed Abbas Mousavi expressed regret at a shooting rampage that has killed and injured dozens of Thai citizens.

He also offered sympathy for Thailand’s government, nation and the families of victims of the bitter incident, and wished the injured a speedy recovery and health.

A soldier went on the shooting rampage in northeastern Thailand, killed at least 29 people, and was finally shot dead by security services after he holed himself up in a shopping center.

Jakraphanth Thomma on Saturday killed his commanding officer before stealing weapons from a military camp.

The Thai police and military sources said they had killed the 32-year-old soldier on Sunday morning, a few hours after a failed raid on the Terminal 21 complex in Nakhon Ratchasima left one member of the security forces dead and two injured.

Iran Launches Zafar Satellite, 90% of Research Objectives Achieved

Iran Launches Zafar Satellite, 90% of Research Obj

Speaking with the Islamic Republic of Iran’s New Network, the spokesperson for the space sector of the Iranian Defense Ministry said the Zafar satellite has been successfully launched with the Simorgh satellite carrier from the Imam Khomeini National Space Center.

Ahmad Hosseini added that, however, the satellite carrier has failed to reach the required velocity for the orbit injection phase, but gave an assurance that the necessary modifications will be made to the process for the next launch.

He explained that the pre-launch preparations have been carried out over the past days at the space center, and the satellite was finally launched at 7:15 pm local time.

The satellite carrier performed the first task completely and the launch was carried out flawlessly, he added, noting that the second stage was also performed, when the engines were switched on successfully.

The satellite carrier travelled around 90 percent of the planned trajectory, reached an altitude of 540 kilometers above the Earth, and reached a velocity of 6,500 meters per second, Hosseini noted.

The satellite carrier flew for about 9 minutes, he stated, saying the main objectives for research in the project have been accomplished, and the whole data have been collected.

Unfortunately, the satellite carrier could not reach the needed velocity at the last moments, the spokesman added, but gave an assurance that the necessary modifications will be made to the next operation.

The data received during the launch are going to be processed and analyzed for the optimization of the research project, he noted.

Hosseini said the Iranian scientists have carried out the necessary optimization techniques at the space center and at the satellite carrier, and have made the necessary changes in the engines and the control systems. “The bulk of the changes that have been made gave positive results.”

“As announced before, it was a research launch, and our expectations were satisfied in the respective sectors,” the spokesman explained, saying the main purpose of the research launches is to collect data and optimize the designs.

“We consider the launch as a successful one, because the research launch is not aimed at the injection phase,” Hosseini added, noting that despite the failure to reach the planned orbit, the satellite could connect with the Earth bases for a couple of minutes, transmitted signals, and its performance was tested.

The satellite carrier’s engines were tested for 375 seconds in vacuum conditions, at high velocities and accelerations, he noted, saying it was the first time that the homegrown engines worked for such a period of time in vacuum.
“The data analysis and modifications will be carried out at the shortest time possible and the next launch will be performed soon,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Minister of Information and Communications Technology Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi announced on his Instagram account that the Zafar-II satellite will be launched in the Iranian month of Khordad (May / June 2020).

Hosseini, the spokesperson for the space sector of the Iranian Defence Ministry, says the infrastructures of the space centre have been prepared for the launch after the necessary operations.

“200 main processes have been carried out by 30 teams and the necessary communications have been established with six provinces for the operation.”

The Zafar satellite and the Simorgh satellite carrier are part of a research project, he added, explaining, “The nature of the research and technological projects is such that this process includes a plan, and the steps in the process are taken according to planning, and on the basis of the results produced at each step and the analysis of the data and the results, the necessary decisions about the rest of the work would be made.”

“As soon as all conditions are set, the launch operation will be carried out,” Hosseini added.

“The process of launching the Zafar satellite with the Simorgh satellite carrier has complicated conditions due to the testing of new technologies,” he added.

“What matters in performing such project is collecting data and conducting the analyses step by step, so that our scientists could analyze the collected data to take the next steps for the future projects,” he stated.

The spokesman finally noted that a successful launch of the satellite will mark an important achievement, expressing hope that it would result in achieving the main purpose, which is placing the satellite into the orbit successfully.

Iran Unveils New Homegrown Missile

Iran Unveils New Homegrown Missile

The new achievements were unveiled in a Sunday ceremony attended by Chief-Commander of Islamic Revolution Guards Corps.

Major General Hossein Salami and Brigadier Genneral Amir Ali Hajizadeh.

Using the technology of carbon fibre engine bodies has opened the way for enduring 100 bars of pressure and 3,000 degrees C, and for building very light missiles.

Ra’ad 500 missile weighs half as much as Fateh 110 (which had a steel body), while its range has increased as much as 200 km compared to the latter.

The two missile achievements, composite engine body and moving nozzle have laid the groundwork for using solid-fuel engines outside the atmosphere.

Qatar to Become First PG Arab State to Operate Submarines

Qatar to Become First PG Arab State to Operate Submarines

The American business magazine Forbes reported that a new memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Italian company Fincantieri, Europe’s largest shipbuilder, covers the “supply of cutting-edge naval vessels and submarines” to the Qatari Emiri Navy.

“Qatar may become the first Arab Persian Gulf state to operate submarines,” the report said, adding that currently Iran is the only submarine operator in the Persian Gulf.

According to the report, the Qatari submarines, which are likely to be relatively small light ones, may be part of a much larger 5-billion-euro deal with Italy which was agreed in 2017.

The accord, it noted, included a large helicopter carrier, called a Landing Platform Dock (LPD), four warships and two patrol boats as well as shore support and help with a new offshore naval base.

It further said that Saudi Arabia and the UAE, two of Qatar’s neighbors embroiled in a diplomatic crisis with Doha, have both stated needs to acquire submarines.

Qatar has difficult relations these countries so the submarine acquisition could be seen, at least in part, as a response to these moves,” the report added.

In June 2017, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Bahrain, and the UAE imposed a land, naval and air blockade on import-dependent Qatar, accusing Doha of supporting terrorism; an allegation strongly denied by Doha.

The Saudi-led bloc presented Qatar with a list of demands and gave it an ultimatum to comply with them or face consequences. Doha, however, refused to meet the demands and stressed that it would not abandon its independent foreign policy.

Countdown Begins for Launch of Iranian Satellite

Countdown Begins for Launch of Iranian Satellite

In a post on his Instagram account on Sunday morning, Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi said Zafar will be launched in coming hours.
The young minister had announced in late January that the Iranian satellite would be launched before February 11 – the anniversary of victory of the Islamic Revolution.
Zafar is going to be sent into the orbit with a homegrown satellite carrier, dubbed Simorgh, from the Imam Khomeini National Space Centre.
Zafar weighs 113 kilograms, is planned to be sent into an orbit at the altitudes of above 500 km, and will be utilized for telecommunication, taking images, and picking up space signals.

8 Million Tourists Visit Iran in 10 Months: Minister

8 Million Tourists Visit Iran in 10 Months: Minister

In a meeting with a senior Iranian cleric in the city of Qom on Sunday, Ali-Asghar Mounesan said eight million tourists have arrived in Iran during the past ten months.

The minister also noted that the number of visiting tourists would have exceeded 10 million if the recent incidents had not happened.

He was probably referring to a decline in the number of foreign visitors after the January downing of a Ukrainian passenger plane near Tehran.

Mounesan further said that Iran generates $11.7 billion in revenue from the tourism industry, noting that the figure could rise in future with proper planning.

Pointing to a decrease in the number of foreign tourists after the outbreak of the novel coronavirus in China, the minister said Iran’s domestic tourism capacities are so diverse and strong that a drop in the number of foreign travelers would not deal a significant blow to the tourism industry.

The Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts has formulated policies to promote religious tourism and organize the old and new markets, Mounesan explained, referring to the suitable agreements that Iran has signed with Iraq to promote religious tourism.
