FM Zarif Warns about Consequences of Siding with US

FM Zarif Warns about Consequences of Siding with US

“Whoever sides with the US and calls the heroes of regional nations terrorist will definitely have no future in this region,” Foreign Minister Zarif noted.
Foreign Minister Zarif made the remarks in a Monday speech to a ceremony marking the 41st anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution, attended by the Iranian President and foreign ambassadors in Tehran.

In his remarks, the top Iranian diplomat described the massive presence of people in the funeral of Iranian commander Lt. General Qassem Soleimani as an expression of hatred for the US policies in the region.

“Certain individuals have been dreaming about an end to the Islamic Republic for 41 years, and repeat their previous mistaken policies every day on the basis of such wrong understanding, and console themselves with a pretext every day that their expected day has come, and while the Iranian people reject such viewpoint with their presence, with the expression of views and with the support, they insist on their wrong outlook again with another excuse,” the minister added.

“If the people of Iran were to announce it to the US that ‘we oppose you and do not agree with your policies’, they could not do it any better than taking part in the ceremony commemorating Lt. General Soleimani; and if the regional people wanted to tell the US that ‘we abhor your policies and do not accept that you may define terrorism for us, because you yourselves are the leader of them (terrorists)’, they could not express this any better than by attending the commemorative service for Martyr Soleimani. The world will once again see the Iranian people’s epic tomorrow,” Foreign Minister Zarif noted.

The top Iranian diplomat finally advised the enemies to abandon their wrong dreams and not mistake the domestic quarrels and arguments in Iran for a gap between the Iranian people.

“What you considered as a rift between people became obvious in the funeral of Martyr Soleimani,” Foreign Minister Zarif told the enemies.

President Brands US Sanctions as Terrorist Act against All Iranians

President Brands US Sanctions as Terrorist Act against All Iranians

Speaking in a Monday meeting with foreign ambassadors in Tehran, President Rouhani said, “Those who are familiar with Iran’s civilization and culture know that the great Iranian nation will not yield to bullying and unjust pressures”.
An excerpt of the presidential speech is as follows, according to the president’s official website:

“In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful

I would like to extend a warm welcome to all the distinguished guests, ambassadors and heads of missions in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

For us, Bahman 22nd is reminiscent of the critical and important memories of 41 years ago and the liberation of the people from dictatorship.

Forty-one years ago, people responded positively to the call of a trusted leader and scholar who called on them to form a movement and revolution to overthrow a rotten and corrupt regime and establish a popular government.

The basis of the Islamic Revolution that achieved victory over 16 years of fight was the movement and presence of the people, not a particular party, group or ethnic group.

The Revolution that was based on national causes and goals was undoubtedly a completely popular revolution that always relied on the people.

Today, we are facing unjust sanctions imposed by the United States against the entire Iranian nation. No one doubts that the maximum pressure and the US sanctions are against each and every Iranian people. This means that not even one person is excluded from these sanctions; a single patient, a single food item is not excluded. No airplane part that is needed for flight safety is excluded. And this is completely clear; a 100-percent inhumane sanction that is against an entire nation. Such sanction may have been less seen in the history of the world.

They are putting these maximum pressures to force the officials to surrender and then the people. Americans are wrong in both of them. Our people and officials do not give in to these sanctions.

The Americans thought they could force the Iranian nation to surrender with maximum pressure on the entire imports, exports and people’s lives. Those who are familiar with Iran’s civilization and culture know that the great Iranian nation will not yield to bullying and unjust pressures.

Despite America’s all-out pressures in the past 20 months, all economic indices since the past 8 months show that Iran’s conditions are completely stable and we have successfully overcome these sanctions and that America has made a mistake. Inflation, economic growth and employment figures show that the Iranian people and government are on the right track.

Although today our people face many problems because of the sanctions, there is no queue across the country for food, medicine, or essentials, for transportation and travel, for scientific study, or for treatment in hospitals. All our conditions today are stable in this country.

We managed the country well last year and this year despite the sanctions, and we needed neither foreign loans nor borrowing from our central bank to run the country.

We are proud of the Iranian people’s resistance, and the United States has shown that it is not a country that adheres to its signature and commitments, and that it is not a country that adheres to its political and moral commitments, and this is the first damage to the dignity of the US government.

The US action is against the safeguards of the International Court of Justice in The Hague, which ordered the United States not to initiate sanctions; and also the US actions are contrary to the UN Security Council resolutions including Resolution 2231.

The assassination of a military commander on the territory of a neighboring country that was its official guest is a great crime that violates all international regulations, and no one in our region doubts that General Soleimani was after stability and peace in the region.

It was easy for General Soleimani to kill the American generals if he wanted, but he never did it, and I testify this as someone who was fully aware of the actions of the Quds Force and Commander Soleimani in the region.

The route of General Soleimani was not from the airport to the battlefield, not to a field of action against the United States, but from the airport to a meeting venue with the Prime Minister of Iraq, the highest official of the country, hours later. The great crime is condemned by us, by the world and by the international law.

The third crime of the United States, in addition to dozens of other crimes, is the crime against the Palestinian people and our region, with international regulations and UN resolutions in 1967 and 1973 in place.

According to the international law, the land of Palestine belongs to the Palestinian people, and the Palestinian refugees must return to their country. The US has taken anti-human rights action against Palestine, as it has done so against the Syrian people.

In Iraq, despite the decision of the Iraqi lawmakers and government, it has remained in the country in violation of the international law.

What they are pursuing via the Crime of the Century and want to keep the Palestinian nation permanently displaced from their homeland is a new scandal for the White House, for the American people, and for the American government before it has any effect.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has been a harbinger of peace since the beginning of the Revolution, and during these 41 years, we have not acted against any state. War was imposed on us, but we did not attack a country. We helped the displaced. We helped the displaced people of Afghanistan, the Iraqi people who were displaced in the war of the Coalition against Iraq. We helped the Kuwaiti people during Saddam’s invasion of Kuwait. We helped the people of Qatar who were under illegal siege. We helped the Yemeni people with food and medicine. During these 41 years, we have helped the people and the cause of Palestine. We helped the Lebanese people. We fought against the terrorists and suffered casualties.

Our people helped every government that asked us for help against terrorism. The day Iraq asked us for help against ISIS, we helped them. The day the region in northern Iraq asked us for help, we went to help them.

The day the Syrian government asked us for help, we helped them. Our nation is a peace-loving nation against terrorism. We are a nation that has been a victim of terrorism and chemical weapons.

Our nation is a victim of terrorist groups that are still supported by the United States, a victim of terrorists and chemical weapons prepared for Saddam by the Western countries. But we have always sought peace, and today we are seeking peace. What we are saying is for the benefit of the people of the region and even the American people.

What the White House is doing is against the interests of this nation, the nations of the region, against the stability of the region, and against the interests of America itself and the American people.

Our proposal since the first day (of the current administration) in 2013 was World Against Violence and Extremism (WAVE) at the UN General Assembly and in 2019 again, our proposal at the UN General Assembly was the Hormuz Peace Endeavour (HOPE). What we propose is to fight against extremism and terrorism in the region. Iran’s proposal to the whole world is dialogue and negotiation.

Let the whole world know that we have used our missiles two times; once against ISIS when they killed our innocent people in Khuzestan and Ahwaz and around the Islamic Consultative Assembly. The second time was against Ain al-Assad Air Base in Iraq because of the crimes they committed and assassinated our military commander.

So, our precision-guided and modern missiles are to be used against terror and crime; we have never built missiles for aggression, and will never do so.

We assure all of our neighbors and regional people that we want peaceful coexistence. We are willing to negotiate with all our neighbors, without exception, to settle the issues. We have brotherly and friendly relations with most of our neighbors and countries around the world today.

What we want is brotherhood, friendship and negotiation. We want the end of wars, the end of aggression, the end of supporting terrorism, and the end of sanctions. We favor living together, which is the message of our Revolution.

This is the message of our imam. We have been with this Revolution for 41 years, and we will always stand by it because it has brought us freedom, independence and national sovereignty and has set us on the path to ethics and peace.”

“What was important about the missile attack on the US base in Ayn al-Assad was that it broke the US apparent awe and prestige, as no one had dared to attack their bases for 70 years, but the IRGC’s slap in the US face … brought them to their knees,” General Sharif said on Monday.

He made the remarks in an address to a commemorative ceremony for General Qassem Soleimani at the Centre for International Conferences at Damghan University.

Referring to the US casualties in the aftermath of the missile strike, General Sharif said “they will talk about their casualties and destroyed equipment over their coming presidency election campaigns.

“A total of 13 missiles hit different spots within the US base, though our priority was not to kill the US troops. But the casualties were definitely more than they have announced to date,” he added.

Stressing the necessity for the US to leave Iraq he said “in the country … tens of millions of people took to the streets to … confirm the Iraqi parliament resolution to expel US military from their country.

Americans know this reality, but they brazen it out.”

Iran Leader Grants Clemency to 2,315 Inmates

The 2,315 inmates who were granted Islamic clemency through the Leader’s approval had been convicted at the country’s public and Islamic Revolution courts, the Judicial Organization of the Armed Forces, and the State Discretionary Punishment Organization.

Ayatollah Khamenei issued the approval on the occasion of the 41st anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution in response to a letter from Iran’s Judiciary Chief Ebrahim Raisi who had asked for clemency for a large group of eligible convicts.

Article 110 of the Constitution grants the country’s Leader the right to pardon or reduce the sentences of convicts upon a recommendation from the head of the Judiciary.

The clemency, however, does not apply to all types of convicts, including those who have been sentenced for their role in armed struggle against the country, armed or organized drug trafficking, rape, armed robbery, arms smuggling, abduction, bribery and embezzlement.

Each year in February, when Iran marks the victory anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Khamenei grants an amnesty for a number of prisoners.

On Tuesday, Iran will mark the 41st anniversary of the Islamic Revolution, which put an end to the monarchical rule of the US-backed Pahlavi regime.

Iran Out of Recession Now: Economy Minister

Iran Out of Recession Now: Economy Minister

He made the remarks when elaborating on the Rouhani administration’s economic performance in the run-up to the 41st anniversary of the Islamic revolution in an interview with the Iranian state TV on Sunday.

“When the eleventh cabinet [Rouhani’s first term] started its work in 2013, the economic growth was minus 7 percent because of the sanctions imposed at the time. From September 2013 to March 2014 the trend of the negative growth slowed down and it stood at minus 3.2 percent.”

“The growth rate finally became positive as of March 2013 until March 2017, which it reached 12.5 percent, which was partly accounted for by the possibility of oil exports after JCPOA,” he noted.

“The economic growth without taking oil production into account was 6.5 percent from March 2016 until March 2017 according to Statistical Centre of Iran, and 4.5 percent according to Iran’s Central Bank,” he added.

Referring to Iran’s experience of negative economic growth from March 2018 to March 2019 due to the return and intensification of US sanctions after its withdrawal from JCPOA, the minister said “it was estimated that the economic growth would sink into between minus 8 percent and minus 15 percent, yet thanks to the measures and policies adopted it stood at minus 4.2 percent with oil and minus 2.2 percent without oil.”

He added “the predictions made in 2018 about economic growth in 2019 was very concerning, but, fortunately – according to the Central Bank’s statistics – non-oil economic growth was 0.4 percent from March to June, 0.5 percent from March to September, and 0.9 percent from March to November, which indicates that non-oil section of the economy has managed to thrive.”

Describing Iran’s agricultural section “at the height of economic growth”, the minister said “the industrial section has also shown a positive 7.5% growth, and other indexes also signify positive economic growth in the non-oil section.”

He mentioned that although the Rouhani administration “tried not to borrow from the banking system, our debt to the banking system has increased. But the borrowing was not aimed at offsetting the budget deficit, but at bartering.”

Iranian officials say the US sanctions imposed by Donald Trump since 2018, when he pulled out his country from the deal between Iran and major world powers, have failed to stop Iran from developing its economic capabilities.

Iran Opens Comprehensive Stem Cell Research Centre

Iran Opens Comprehensive Stem Cell Research Centre

Addressing the Sunday ceremony held at the TMUS, Sattari said “the inauguration of this centre has opened a new aperture in medical sciences, accelerating the technology’s entry into this area.”

“[Now] the youths and researchers active in the fields of engineering and medicine can do joint research,” Sattari noted.

He added “many technologies will be developed in the centre and thanks to the installation of cleanroom equipment we will also see the infrastructure created for youth activities in the fields concerned.”

Referring to “commercialization of stem cells” as “the matter at hand”, he said “the number of products licensed by the Ministry of Heath has increased and the number of the knowledge companies operating in this area has reached 100, which is an appropriate figure, as not every country enjoys this number of such companies and products.”

On the margins of the ceremony, a total of 25 types of intermediates in the fields of tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, chemistry and biology were unveiled by the knowledge-based company Jarf-Andishan.

The intermediates are used in making a whole variety of products such as natural and synthetic polymer substances and their derivations.

The import price of the intermediates, which have a high added value, amounted to over $740 per gram, and indigenization of their production is expected to have a huge impact on the development of a variety of sciences and industries in Iran, and to result in the industries’ self-sufficiency in the relevant areas.

Coronavirus as Scary as You’ve Heard about It: Eyewitness

Iranian students pose for a photo during a flight that evacuated them from the Chinese city of Wuhan, the epicentre of the novel coronavirus
Iranian students pose for a photo during a flight that evacuated them from the Chinese city of Wuhan, the epicentre of the novel coronavirus

The Chinese city of Wuhan is currently in quarantine and its 11 million citizens are cordoned off at homes. When the coronavirus broke out, there were 80 Iranian students living in this city.

These students were repatriated last week and are currently quarantined by the Health Ministry for a two-week period. They say people should not be afraid of them because they are not sick. That’s what the Health Ministry says, too.

Ahead of the evacuation, Iranian journalist Taraneh Bani-Yaghoub conducted interviews with two of these students. What follows are excerpts of Bani-Yaghoub’s report and interviews with these students:

Today, Wuhan goes through a story similar to Jose Saramago’s novel Blindness; a city in quarantine, 11 million confined populations, empty streets, smoke, closed shops, disinfectant odors, bodies that no one dares to approach and 80 Iranian students who are trapped there. They have a health record and they are going to be quarantined for a while after return, but what can they do with their fear?

Sina Safavardi is a business student and representative of Iranian students in Wuhan. He has lived in the city for four years and says Wuhan is his second home.

“Before the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, Wuhan was a quiet student city, but the things I see these days really seem strange to me. I think this situation will continue for the next few months and it will take time to eradicate the disease.”

Sina says the disease is as scary as people have heard about it or seen in movies and photos.

“Just a few days ago, I delivered the food packages that the [Iranian] embassy had provided for our fellows. On the way, I saw a sick person who fell to the ground. I have witnessed how they move the dead and wrap something like a plastic bag around them. It is even hard to see. The guys, who live in the Hankou area, are in a worse situation, especially medical students whose dormitories are near the hospital and can’t get out of the house at all.”

Chinese People - the epicentre of the novel coronavirusQ: Aren’t you scared to go out and deliver the packages?

A: I have no fear at all. Many of the students were stressful and told me not to go. Believe me; this stress in the quarantine is even worse than the fear of disease. When the Chinese themselves understand someone is from Wuhan they treat him badly. They even beat him and forcibly expel him from the restaurant and hotel. Of course, it has been thirteen days now that the city is under military rule and everywhere is closed.

Q: Do you mean the whole urban area when you are talking about the quarantine?

A: The whole city is quarantined. The [Iranian] Embassy has to give permission to you to go to a part of the city. Many of our colleagues can’t even go out to buy food, especially those in the Hankou area. All supermarkets are closed or empty. Of course it’s been three days that they have been feeding the hostels, but unfortunately we are not living at hostels and have to prepare our own meals.

Q: What do you do for food? Does the embassy provide you with the foodstuff?

A: Yes. Packages containing food, vitamin C and masks. They also introduced us to a warehouse. The warehouse was in the suburbs of Wuhan. They also gave us a car for transportation. This warehouse is not owned by the Chinese; it belongs to Muslims and its owner is an Arab. The embassy has helped us a lot and they want to help us return now.

However, the situation is tougher for Mohammad Alizadeh, a medical student who has been in Wuhan for four months.

“We have to stay in our neighbourhood for the first year and move to Hankou the following year, which is the centre of the virus epidemic. We as the newcomers are even more frightened because we are not familiar with the Chinese people, their culture, their language and their customs,” says Mohammad.

Mohammad lives out of the dorm and has not left home these days and has been living with the embassy’s foodstuff, which he says is about to end.

“There is no traffic, no taxis, and no buses. The ban has been imposed. Wuhan has become a ghost town. Even now we have the stress of going back to Iran and the kind of reaction people have.”

Iran Evacuates Its Citizens from China’s Wuhan

Q: Mohammad! Have you been insulted?

A: If you look at different news and social networks, you will find out. Believe us. We are in good health and have had tests and will be re-tested when we return.

Sina also confirms Mohammed’s words that Iranian students are more mentally and psychologically pressured than feared by Corona.

“Some went out of the town, but when they saw their visas and realized that they had come from Wuhan, they didn’t let them in. They were displaced. Please tell people that we will take the tests before leaving Wuhan, and we will be quarantined for 15 days when we arrive in Iran. They said we would stay at a hotel. We needed a lot of permissions from different authorities to be allowed to fly. Mahan Airline’s flight is to return us.”

“The embassy guys really helped out. We were the first country to distribute food packages among the students. They were in constant contact with us, and they resolved the students’ military service issue to facilitate our return. Many countries have returned their nationals, except for the Iraqis, Yemenis and Syrians who cancelled their return and said they would not assist their nationals to return. Iraq was supposed to send a plane, but then said they should stay here. Our biggest fear is the people’s treatment. Tell people we are not a harm to our country.”

The people of “Blindness” novel did well in the end. On the day they realised they could regain things through public empathy, they gained their vision. Many are afraid of the arrival of Corona in Iran these days. Many ask whether this disease can affect us too. Perhaps the only way to prevent the disease in the country is through empathy and accurate information-giving.
