Residential Building Fire in Iran’s Qom Kills 5, Injures 66

Sahar Residential Building, with 228 apartments, caught fire early Friday. The fire brigade was called at 3 am, according to a local official.

The fire had started in the minus-one and minus-two stories of the building, and killed two men, two women, and a child who succumbed to the wounds at the hospital.

Abbas Jafari, the head of Qom’s Fire Brigade, says over 160 residents were evacuated from the building, 38 of whom were hospitalized for respiratory problems, and 28 others received outpatient treatment.

The fire comes as the city of Qom is already grappling with a deadly novel coronavirus, which started to spread across Iran from the holy city.

According to Kianoush Jahanpour, the kits will be mass produced and delivered to laboratories across the country once they receive the final approval.

Earlier, Iran’s president had vowed that the coronavirus testing kits developed inside the country will enter the mass-production stage in the near future.

All the initial tests on the package have proven to be “positive and credible,” Rouhani told a cabinet session in Tehran on Wednesday, saying the equipment would undergo final examination over the next couple of days.

“Shortly, we will be able to make hundreds of thousands and even millions of these kits, and place them at the disposal of all of the country’s hospitals” he said, noting that the package would enable medics to easily diagnose new cases.

Iran’s Former Ambassador to Vatican Dies of Coronavirus

Khosroshahi on Thursday died of respiratory complications, one day after he was transferred to a hospital in Tehran and tested positive for the COVID-19.

Following the 1979 Revolution, Khosroshahi first served for two years as the representative of the founder of the Islamic Republic, Imam Khomeini, in the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance.
Then he was appointed as Iran’s ambassador to the Vatican.

Before the Revolution, Khosroshahi was a member of Fadā’iyān-e Islam (Devotees of Islam) group which struggled against the Shah’s monarchy.

While in the Vatican, Khosroshahi founded “Europe’s Islamic Culture Centre,” which is still active today in many western European capitals.

After serving in the Vatican, Khosroshahi was sent to Cairo, where he represented Tehran for two years at the Islamic Republic’s Interest Section.

Returning to Iran, Khosroshahi preferred to stay out of the centre stage, and focused on compiling theological books related to Shiism.

He had extensive talks and interactions with the top religious authorities of the Catholic Church in Vatican and the Muslim scholars of Al-Azhar University in Cairo, which is known as the world’s centre of Sunni Islam learning.

Namaki made the remarks in a letter addressed to the Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei on Thursday. The letter came after Ayatollah Khamenei thanked Namaki and all medical personnel across Iran for their efforts to contain the spread of coronavirus.

In his letter, the minister said that all government departments had joined in the fight against coronavirus in a “unique show” of solidarity.

He wrote “this, without any question, would surprise the entire world when the disease is brought to its knees.”

The health minister said that Iran’s swift response to the coronavirus outbreak had come despite the growing economic pressure on the country due to the American sanctions.

Medical personnel across the Iranian healthcare system are replicating heroic efforts shown during the massive floods that affected parts of the country in March and April, Namaki added.

Iran, Red Cross Discuss Battle with COVID-19

In a meeting in Geneva Wednesday, the Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister and the IFRC Secretary General discussed the ways the Federation could help Iran by providing and delivering the medical equipment for the fight against the novel coronavirus.

The two officials also talked about the plans on how the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies can help deliver the necessary medical supplies to Iran, including the coronavirus diagnostic test kits and the personal protective equipment for the medical staff.

In the meeting, Baharvand said the Islamic Republic of Iran has always tried to decouple the humanitarian and specialized issues from political differences, “while the current US administration, particularly the US secretary of state, seeks to take political advantage of a humanitarian issue in an immoral and unprofessional measure, and is even spreading lies about it.”

The Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister finally noted that the novel coronavirus epidemic is not confined to a specific nation and could turn into a global challenge. “Thus, it is necessary to combat and contain it globally.”

Iran Says Flights to/from UAE Will Resume Soon

Iran Condemns US Oil Deal with Syrian Kurdish Group

In comments on Thursday, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Mousavi answered a question from reporters about an abrupt and unannounced suspension of the flights from the United Arab Emirate to Iran, and vice versa, which has caused problems for a number of the Iranian citizens trying to return home.

He said the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Iranian diplomatic missions in Abu Dhabi and Dubai have made ceaseless efforts to make arrangements with the authorities at Iran Civil Aviation Organization and the UAE Embassy in Tehran in order to obtain permission for the resumption of flights operated by the Iranian airlines.

“According to the latest information, the basic approval has been granted to give permission for the flights, and the related flights will be operated soon,” Mousavi added.

The spokesman finally noted that the Foreign Ministry has been doing its utmost to resolve the problem, expressing hope that the coordination among the whole relevant organizations would allow for the repatriation of the Iranian citizens.

His comments came after the United Arab Emirates decided to suspend all flights to and from Iran for at least a week over the outbreak of the new coronavirus.

The UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority made the announcement on Tuesday via the country’s state-run WAM news agency, just hours after Dubai International Airport, the world’s busiest for international travel, said there would be restrictions on flights there.

‘US Sanctions Impeding Coronavirus Treatment in Iran’

‘US Sanctions Impeding Coronavirus Treatment in Iran’

In an interview with Khabar Online, Dr. Mohrez said the situation in the most important coronavirus treatment hospital in Iran is not favourable due to US bans. Excerpts from the interview follow.
“Unfortunately, we have a lot of shortages as a result of sanctions. Today, I was giving consultation at a section of the hospital when I found out all disinfectants there had run out. I was told that people had emptied the containers into cola bottles [and taken the bottles with them].
There is so little equipment under the current situation. Masih Daneshvari hospital, where patients confirmed to have been infected with the coronavirus are kept, should have a lot of facilities, but that’s not the case; rather, due to sanctions, were are short of many supplies at a time when we do need disinfectants.
We have been under sanctions for a long time and need raw materials to produce some pieces of equipment, and we face problems when demand rises. In this year’s flu epidemic, none of the medicines were supplied on time, and we were short of vaccine, too. We are really under sanctions.
We don’t have as many problems as we did in the past, but we have been short of coronavirus diagnosis kits over this time. If it weren’t for the sanctions, all this equipment would be available.
The European company producing the diagnosis kits does not sell its equipment to Iran fearing US sanctions. The World Health Organization recently sent the kits to Iran, and after that we were able to diagnose the disease in people infected with the coronavirus.
Still, that European firm refuses to sell rapid diagnosis kits to Iran. The World Health Organization recently procured and sent the kits to Iran. We need thousands of kits to test everybody, and that’s why we should import them via the company which produces them.
