Tehran, Moscow Discuss Closer Scientific Cooperation

Tehran, Moscow Discuss Closer Scientific Cooperation

Areas of further sci-tech cooperation, including cutting-edge pharmaceutical technologies, were discussed in an online meeting between the Iranian and Russian officials.

“The two countries enjoy wide-ranging and deep-rooted relations on the diplomatic front, and they need to have similar ties in the areas of science and technology as well,” said the Iranian official.

He noted Tehran-Moscow scientific and technological cooperation has gained momentum in recent years, and that the two sides are also running joint ventures as well.

Sattari then touched upon the potentialities of Iranian knowledge-based companies and research centres in the area of vaccine development and production of medications, adding the two sides can also launch joint projects to produce a vaccine for coronavirus.

The head of the Russian Academy of Sciences, in turn, underscored that the academy stands ready to work closely with Iran in the area of science and technology.

He said the two sides can cooperate in the domains of biotechnology, minerals and the ecology of the Caspian Sea as well as the production of medicines.

He suggested the two countries set up a working group to sort out priorities and define projects accordingly.

Sergeev also invited Sattari to attend a meeting of scientists of five Caspian Sea littoral states in a bid to set the stage for closer scientific cooperation between Iran and Russia.

US Not Going to Lift Anti-Iran Sanctions

After Iran started developing its nuclear program in 2002, a lot of countries expressed dissatisfaction with the issue and imposed sanctions in order to keep Tehran from developing military nuclear capability. The various economic, political, scientific, trading, and military sanctions made Iran’s international reputation worse. In 2015 a nuclear pact was reached between Tehran and world powers, but years later US President Donald Trump dismissed the nuclear pact and re-imposed the US sanctions against the country which had been lifted under the 2015 deal.

During the coronavirus pandemic, the international community called upon the United States to suspend economic sanctions as Iran’s economy was facing major challenges. The sanctions referred to restrictions on trades, a ban on providing nuclear technology and selling heavy weapons, a ban on the import, and transactions with Iranian banks and financial sectors. As the BBC reported, US sanctions made Iran’s economy go through a difficult period.

Despite Britain’s attempts to push the US to ease sanctions in order to stop the virus from spreading and save Iranian people’s lives, President Trump offered Tehran some help for dealing with the coronavirus outbreak but refused to ease sanctions on Iran which raised the death toll and pushed the virus to spread in Iran, killing more than 23,000 people officially.

The value of Rial decreases

Iran is still trying to pressure the US to lift sanctions, as it’s almost impossible to survive without medical supplies from other countries but the news won’t be pleasant for them as American lawyers just asked the UN’s highest court to dismiss a case filed by Iran to have the US sanctions lifted based on an earlier verdict by the court. This means that economic issues will continue and the Iranian business and financial sector will probably continue to suffer. The crisis will definitely affect the Iranian currency, the rial, and most likely as a result of US sanctions the value of Iran’s currency will hit the lowest level in the last years.

On account of the sanctions, Iranians can’t trade in US dollars and the most accessible way to avoid financial problems for the Iranian forex traders is to trade with forex brokers globally as FX trading is not allowed in Iran and in fact, there are very few local Iranian forex brokers in the country. One of the main reasons why Iranian investors begin to obtain money with forex trading is that oil rates have been sinking, though due to illegibility it may pose a threat and negatively impact them.

As a result of US sanctions, oil exports had fallen and Iran lost a great fortune in oil revenue.

Dropping oil rates caused a significant fall in Iran’s official currency. Since the petroleum industry in Iran plays a major part in the country’s economy, decreasing crude oil export will immerse its economy which means that the sanctions in Iran may lead to an economic crisis.

Iran’s economy has no way of surviving like this if the pandemic continues during which Iran’s currency, the rial, loses almost two-third of its value against the US dollar. However, the sanctions are not the only reason for the plummeting rial. Raising its liquidity sharply during the past two decades and constant corruption played a key role and determined the same or even higher amount of collapsing the Iranian economy as US sanctions. All this means that liquidity can be even more dangerous for Iran’s economy than previously discussed sanctions.

Sultana Production; A 1,000-Year-Old Career in Iranian Village

Sultana Production; A 1,000-Year-Old Career in Iranian Village

These days, the roofs and yards of homes in the 1,000-year-old tourist village of Doolab (or as locals call it Doolaw or Boolaw) have turned gold as they are full of sultanas produced in old local vineyards.

These raisins are produced with a very special and traditional method and in cooperation with all villagers.

Fewer than 500 households live in the village, which has around 70 vineyards, producing nearly a hundred tonnes of grapes and hundreds of kilograms of sultanas, which are unique in the country.

What has made these golden raisins unique is the method used to produce them, a method registered on the list of the National Intangible Heritage in 2015.

The quality organic sultanas produced in Doolab are well known across Iran as a traditional method is used to produce them. Every year, all families are invited to take the grapes picked in the vineyards to the furnace. Then they boil the grapes in big pots during a special process. Afterwards, the grapes are taken to rooftops of houses and spread on the roofs to remain in the sun. The sultanas are ready for use after almost 10 days.

The ceremony to produce sultanas in this region is a much-revered event attended by a host of families and friends.

Iran Condemns Attack on British Diplomatic Mission in Iraq

Khatibzadeh made the remarks on Thursday in reaction to reports that a roadside bombing has targeted a convoy of diplomatic vehicles in Baghdad.

The Iranian spokesman condemned any attack or assault against diplomatic missions.

He pointed to cases of attacks on Iran’s diplomats and diplomatic sites in Iraq, calling on the Iraqi government to intensify and step up the protection of diplomatic places and guarantee the normal activity of diplomatic missions in that country.

His remarks came after the British embassy in Baghdad and Iraqi officials reported a bombing attack on British diplomatic vehicles on Tuesday.

The attack has reportedly targeted an embassy convoy on a Baghdad highway close to the Umm al-Tabool Mosque, but has left no injuries.

Iran’s President Congratulates Suga on Appointment as Japan’s PM

Iran’s President Congratulates Suga on Appointment as Japan’s PM

In a message on Thursday, President Rouhani warmly congratulated Suga on taking office as Japan’s new prime minister.

The president also paid tribute to former Japanese prime minister, Abe Shinzo, for his “major and influential role” in promoting relations between Iran and Japan.

“The constant consultations between the officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran and Japan, especially in 2019 on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of establishment of political ties which was marked by reciprocal visits by the heads of the two states to their respective capitals, have opened a new chapter in the expansion of relations in all fields of mutual interest,” President Rouhani added.

He further expressed hope that the friendly relations between Iran and Japan and their mutual cooperation in various fields, particularly the economic and trade ties, would further grow during Prime Minister Suga’s tenure.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran’s policy has been always based on helping advance peace and security, respect, and mutual commitment to the international undertakings and agreements. Accordingly, I hope that consultations and joint efforts of the Islamic Republic of Iran and Japan over the regional and international subjects would continue like before,” the president concluded.

He finally wished health, success and prosperity for the Japanese leader and people.

Yoshihide Suga was elected as Japan’s new prime minister by the country’s lower house of parliament on Wednesday, replacing Shinzo Abe who resigned because of poor health and promising to continue his signature economic policies.

71-year-old Suga won the leadership contest of the governing Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) on Monday.

The former Chief Cabinet Secretary and Abe loyalist appointed a new cabinet shortly after he became prime minister, keeping about half of the familiar faces from his predecessor’s lineup.

UAE, Bahrain Rulers Accessories to All Israeli Crimes: Iran Speaker

UAE, Bahrain Rulers Accessories to All Israeli Crimes

The comment by Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf came in a statement issued in reaction to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain normalizing relations with Tel Aviv.

“Many regional governments have, for years, been lovingly kissing the hands of despotic Zionists who have blood on their hands, and clawing at the haggard faces of oppressed Palestinian people,” read part of the statement.

He said the recent peace agreements with Israel were simply putting on paper the UAE and Bahrain’s shameful years-long animosity with Palestinians.

“They have had cordial relations with the hostile Zionist enemy at all times,” the statement added.

The top parliamentarian added the normalization agreements with Tel Aviv have brought humiliation upon the UAE and Bahrain.
