Iran says its remedial nuclear steps in compliance with NPT

Iran nuclear programe

Iran’s acting ambassador to international organizations in Vienna made the comments in an address to a meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Board of Governors, where members should vote on a western-backed resolution that criticizes the country’s nuclear program with regard to its obligations under the 2015 agreement, the JCPOA.

Mohammad Reza Ghaebi told the meeting that the agency is focusing on the obligations of Iran while those of other signatories to the JCPOA are being ignored.

“If there was an international organization to oversee the proliferation of illegal sanctions, reports about violations by the US and the E-3 European countries under the Security Council resolution 2231 would have become a long list,” he told the board meeting.

“Extra-territorial imposition of such unilateral sanctions are a breach of international law per se, let alone the US’s violation of its obligations under resolution 2231 of the Security Council.”

Ghaebi noted that the sanctions impose illegal economic restrictions on others that goes against the principle of non-intervention in other countries’ affairs, enshrined in the UN Charter.

“[By using the sanctions], the US tries to influence the political choices independent countries make, in line with its own foreign policy priorities,” he said.

Ghaebi stressed that Iran’s remedial nuclear steps fall under paragraphs 26 and 36 of the JCPOA, while the US sanctions “cannot be considered retaliation or reciprocal measures”.

He also slammed the European signatories to the nuclear deal, saying they cannot claim to support the JCPOA as long as they block Iranian assets and stick with the US sanctions on Iran.

The ambassador added that Iran has limited its remedial nuclear measures to its obligations and rights under the NPT.

Ghaebi said even now and after the long-running talks to revive the JCPOA, the US is yet to clarify whether it would end its maximum pressure campaign against Iran and respect its obligations under the accord, n a verifiable manner.

Iranian nuclear chief: Tehran has no secret atomic activities

Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran Mohammad Eslami

Mohammad Eslami told reporters on Wednesday that the alleged pieces of evidence raised in the report of the secretary general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, are part of a political move aimed at maintaining the so-called maximum pressure campaign against Tehran.

Eslami referred to a resolution drafted by the US and the European troika to be put to a vote at the IAEA’s board of governors.

Eslami said the Zionist regime is the mastermind behind the resolution.

He noted that Iran entered into the 2015 nuclear deal to end allegations that had been leveled against the country for many years, adding that approval of the anti-Iran resolution would mean Tehran is back in square one.

Eslami dismissed claims that Iran did not fully cooperate with the IAEA as threadbare and described Iran’s cooperation with the agency as maximum.

He added, two to three percent of the world’s nuclear capacity belongs to Iran, but about 25 percent of the international inspections are being carried out on Iran’s sties.

Eslami underlined that Iran will not retreat in the face of these pressures, which he said will force Tehran to give up its good will vis-à-vis the other sides in the JCPOA.

Former Iranian diplomat: IAEA resolution could trigger snapback

Former Iranian diplomat: IAEA resolution could trigger snapback

A former Iranian diplomat has said closeness between the US and Europe can result in an attempt by the two sides to trigger the snapback mechanism against Iran.

Seyyed Jalal Sadatian told Iranian Labor News Agency, ILNA, that the US-EU troika drafted resolution against Iran that’s going to be put to a vote at the IAEA’s board of governors does not contain a clause calling for dragging Iran before the UN Security Council and even if they did this, China and Russia would veto a resolution there.

Sadatian however said if the US and the European troika trigger the snapback mechanism, the situation will become more difficult for the Islamic Republic.

The former Iranian diplomat also said approval of the resolution at the board of governors could also cause tension and turn public opinion outside Iran against the country.

Iran has warned that it will give a proportionate response if the IAEA board passes the US-EU troika’s resolution.

Iran’s Leader: Hajj teaches coexistence

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei

Ayatollah Khamenei held the meeting on the threshold of this year’s hajj congregation to delivered his message to the pilgrims and the organizers of the religious ritual.

The Leader said one of the most important issues in Hajj is coexistence, as people from different cultures, places, colors, and languages stay together during the pilgrimage.
He cited a Qur’anic verse, advising the pilgrims against foul language or misbehavior.

The Leader also noted that living a simple life is another important lesson of the Hajj as the garment used for the pilgrimage is a symbol of simplicity.

Ayatollah Khamenei also said Hajj is a manifestation of unity among Muslims and advised the pilgrims not to focus on the differences between the Shias and Sunnis, and instead highlight the common grounds between the two Islamic sects.

The Leader said the main issue that Muslims need to highlight during the ritual is the “plague of Zionism”.

The comments by the Iranian Leader was made as the occupying regime of Israel has normalized ties with a number of Arab states through a US-brokered deal, which sparked fury among Muslims who condemned the agreement as a betrayal against Palestinians.

Ayatollah Khamenei stated that the Arab states will not benefit from the rapprochement as the Zionist regime will only exploit them to further its own agendas.

39,600 Iranians will depart for Medina on June 13 for this year’s Hajj pilgrimage after a two-year hiatus due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
