Military chief: Iran seeking highest level of deterrent power against enemies

Major General Mohammad Bagheri

Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Major General Mohammad Baqeri said on Thursday, “We have set the goal of reaching the peak of deterrence” so that the enemies will not have the courage to even dream about attacking Iran.

He made the comments days after the Israeli regime’s military chief renewed threats of military action against Iran.

Baqri further highlighted the great responsibility resting on the shoulders of the Armed Forces for safeguarding the nation against threats, urging them to step up efforts to boost their preparedness for any type of confrontation with the enemies in case of any aggression.

He further praised the role of martyr Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani, the anti-terror icon, in the regional fight against the Daesh terrorist group.

Had it not been for the successful struggles of General Soleimani and his companions against Daesh in Iraq and Syria, Iran would have now been a neighbor to the Takfiri terror group and bitter developments would have been unfolding in the two Arab states, he said.

General Soleimani was assassinated in a US military drone strike in Iraq in early 2020.

Top diplomat: Bright future ahead for Iran-Russia-China alliance

Kazem Jalali

“The future of such an alliance is very bright,” said Kazem Jalali.

He then elaborated on the importance of this trilateral alliance for the region and the international system.

“Russia is our northern neighbor and a powerful country which is very vast and enjoys high potential and capabilities; moreover, there is Iran which is a powerful country both at the regional and international levels,” he added.

The top diplomat said this is a coalition which major powers, especially the US, will certainly envy.

“Over the past 43 years, we have fought for our independence and stood up to hegemonic powers as well as the global unipolar system, and Iran paid heavy prices in those areas, but managed to secure a stable place on the world stage,” said the ambassador.

He said Iran-Russia relations are going through their golden age, and added special attention should be paid to mutual economic cooperation.

Iran and Russia to gradually ditch dollar in foreign trades

Rial Dollar

In an interview with Iran’s national TV channel on Wednesday night, Ali Saleh Abadi said trade volume between Iran and Russia stands at 4 billion dollars annually that can be carried out in their own national currencies.

Saleh Abadi added the move is a major initiative that can facilitate trade between businesspeople in Iran and Russia.

He highlighted the two countries have signed a memorandum of understanding to use the Iranian rial and the Russian ruble in their small businesses, adding there are plans for the two countries’ banking systems which will be announced soon.

Iran and Russia, both targeted by US-led sanctions, have been trying to wean their bilateral trade off the US dollar, which they say is used as a political tool for pressure and domination.

On Monday, Iran launched trading in the rial-ruble in its foreign exchange market to further bolster its economic relations with Russia and diminish other foreign currencies’ role in the Iranian market.

Tehran and Moscow have also been working on developing an alternative to the global interbank money transfer service, SWIFT, through unification of their banking systems.

Iraq declares natl. day of mourning after bloody raids on Kurdistan region

Tourists killed in Turkish air raids on northern Iraq

Local officials said the artillery fire struck the resort area of Barakh in the Zakho district of the semi-autonomous Kurdish-run region late on Wednesday, leaving nine tourists, including children, dead and nearly two dozen others wounded.

Following the attacks, the Iraqi premier sent a delegation, led by Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein, to the region and ordered a probe.

“The Turkish forces committed a blatant violation of the sovereignty of Iraq,” al-Kadhimi wrote on Twitter.

Ankara has, however, denied any involvement in the attacks, which it described as an act of terror.

“Turkey is ready to take every step for the truth to come out,” the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Kadhimi’s office has ordered the Iraqi Foreign Ministry to draw up ‘a list of Turkey’s acts of aggression’, recall Baghdad’s envoy, and file a complaint with the UN Security Council, among other things.

Overnight, hundreds of angry Iraqi people took to the streets near the Turkish Embassy in Baghdad to condemn the bloodshed.

In a statement, Hadi al-Amiri, secretary-general of the Badr Organization, called on the Iraqi government to immediately close the border with Turkey.

Influential Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr criticized the Iraqi Foreign Ministry’s “weak” statement on the attack, calling on Baghdad to take a stronger action.

Iraq and Turkey have long been at loggerheads over Ankara’s frequent raids on positions of the Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK) in Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan region, which it has branded as a terror group.

Baghdad has roundly slammed the Turkish raids as a violation of Iraq’s sovereignty.
