Iran FM: New stage to start in Vienna if Tehran red lines met

Iran FM Hossein Amirabdolahian

Hossein Amirabdollahian, in a phone conversation with his Omani counterpart Badr Al-Busaid, added Iran is ready for a lasting nuclear deal.

Amirabdollahian also underscored Iran’s goodwill and seriousness about reaching a lasting agreement.

He said after receiving the US response regarding the EU-proposed draft nuclear agreement, if Iran is assured that it will enjoy full economic benefits from the deal and that its red lines are respected, all parties will enter a new stage in Vienna.

The Iranian foreign minister however said no one can talk with certainty about reaching a good and lasting deal before the parties to the negotiations have agreed on all points.

Amirabdollahian pointed to Oman’s constructive role during the Vienna negotiations aimed at removing anti-Iran sanctions and thanked the Persian Gulf sultanate for its efforts to bring the views of different parties closer.

The top Omani diplomat also expressed hope that all parties to the Vienna talks will make joint efforts toward producing good results.

Figures show 48% growth in foreign trade during 1st year of Raisi’s administration

Iran Trade

That’s according to a report by IRNA, which is affiliated with the government. The report was citing official figures from Iran’s Central Bank.

It said the 48% growth in an all-time high in the past three decades, including after Iran signed the nuclear deal with the P5+1 group in 2015.

This is while, according to this report, the growth of foreign trade involving exports and imports of goods and services in the last quarter of the previous administration was negative.

Following the US withdrawal from the nuclear deal in 2018, foreign trade plunged, which the IRNA report partly blamed on inaction by the administration of the previous President Hassan Rouhani.

Advisor to Iranian negotiating team: Iran and other party made ‘great progress’ during months of nuclear talks

Mohammad Marandi

Mohammad Marandi said the other parties should convince Iran so that an agreement can be reached.

The adviser to the Iranian negotiating team however said Iran and the P4+1 as well as the US have made great progress in talks over the past 8 months.

He said the draft that the US presented back then was far different from what is on the table now.

Marandi noted that what Iran seeks is to make sure that the US will not be able to leave the deal without a price.

He noted that Iran wants all issues resolved, saying that it would be naïve of any country to expect the US to act sincerely because Washington has a long track-record of going back on its word.

The adviser to the Iranian negotiating team stressed that it’s the US and Europeans that must make an effort to convince Iran that they will keep sticking to their obligations.

Iran’s rights chief urges US to free all innocent Iranians in its jails

Kazem Gharibabadi

In a tweet on Thursday, Secretary of Iran’s High Council for Human Rights Kazem Gharibabadi identified two of the innocent Iranians imprisoned in the US as Attar Kashani and Sarhangpour, adding that the latter was being subjected to mistreatment.

“The US has arrested tens of innocent Iranians under the pretext of circumventing its cruel and inhumane sanctions,” the official said.

He said, “All innocent Iranians must be freed — effective immediately.”

He added, “#Sarhangpour is held under dire humanitarian conditions. A non-U.S. resident, he was forced to pay the rent for the apartment in which he is placed under arrest. His access to emergency medical care is denied. He was forced to pay the exorbitant treatment costs. Barbaric!”

A day earlier, Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani had said Iran was prepared to swap prisoners with the United States and had already informed Washington of that preparedness through different channels, outside the framework of the talks on a potential revival of the 2015 nuclear deal.

He was reacting to a tweet by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who said Washington was determined to secure the freedom of all US nationals serving jail terms in Iran.

Journalist: Iran’s NPT withdrawal only guarantee for nuclear deal

In an article on Thursday published by Kayhan, Shariatmadari wrote, “Iran should clearly announce that if the US violates the agreement, it will withdraw from the NPT,” and added, “You can be sure that nothing untoward will happen if we leave the NPT.”

He said, “Although no detailed information has been released about the text of the draft agreement presented by the EU foreign policy chief Joseph Burrell, and the text that Iran has presented in response to it, the statements by Iran’s Foreign Minister (Hossein) Amirabdollahian and Western officials’ remarks in the media indicate that issues such as “US guarantees”, “removal of sanctions”, “PMD or possible military detentions” (extensive and inclusive inspections to ensure that Iran is not and will never be seeking to produce nuclear weapons) are the main sticking points.”

Shariatmadari said, considering US background in unilaterally withdrawing in 2018 from Iran’s nuclear accord with the West, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), even written guarantees, as demanded by Iran’s foreign minister, will not provide assurances for the deal.

He further said there are even no guarantees that the US will comply with the deal and pay damages for the losses in case of a second withdrawal from the JCPOA.

Shariatmadari also called on Iran’s negotiating team to insist on removal of all anti-Iran sanctions under various names and ‘excuses’, including ISA, CISSADA, CAATSA, etc.

Russia: Final outcome of Vienna talks depends on US reaction to Iran proposals

White House

In a tweet, Mikhail Ulyanov reacted to a New York Times report, which spoke of “increasing optimism” among European officials on Tuesday — a day after Iran submitted its response to the EU’s proposals — that a revival of the nuclear deal “may actually be agreed upon by Iran and the United States.”

“There have been reasons for optimism before, but on previous occasions expectations were not met,” Ulyanov said.

“This time more than ever we have a great chance to cross the finish line at the #ViennaTalks. The final result depends on how the #US reacts to the last Iranian reasonable suggestions,” he added.

Iran said Tuesday it submitted a “written response” to what has been described as a final roadmap to restore the nuclear deal.

The EU said it received Iran’s response on Monday night and was studying it.

Bloomberg, citing a European diplomat, said on Wednesday the EU — which coordinates the Vienna talks — found Iran’s response to its proposed blueprint for a final deal as “constructive.”

The US State Department also said it received the Iran document from the EU and would later share its response with its European allies.

Analyst: There are more signs to be optimistic than pessimistic about Vienna talks

Nuclear Talks Vienna

In an opinion piece published by the Khabaronline News Website, Hassan Lajevardi outlined the reasons why observes should follow the Vienna talks with more optimism than pessimism.

Despite all the tensions between Iran and the West, he argued, the negotiations has continued, with both sides putting forward initiatives and showing flexibility, something that the analyst said was a sign of both sides’ inclination toward diplomacy.

The rhetoric of the two main parties to the negotiations — Iran and the US — indicate that the approach of prioritizing diplomacy is outpacing other views and options, he argued.

Meanwhile, officials of the two main parties have had more reservations while speaking of their positions on the talks and voiced readiness to give priority to constructive negotiations in the wake of the recent visits to the Middle East by the presidents of the US and Russia, according to the analyst.

Iran said Tuesday it submitted a “written response” to what has been described as a final roadmap to restore the nuclear deal.

The European Union said it received Iran’s response and was studying it, with reports suggesting that the bloc found Tehran’s document to be constructive.

The US is also studying Iran’s proposals. All eyes are now on Washington to see how it will respond.

Official: 1,800 Covid patients in Tehran hospitals

COVID in Iran

The remarks by Dr. Alireza Zali come as the latest daily tally update released by the Iranian health ministry on Wednesday showed coronavirus killed 67 more people in Iran in the past 24 hours and 4,820 people tested positive for Covid-19.

“Currently, the most effective way to prevent infection is to use a mask and follow health protocols,” Dr. Zali said, adding, “For the people who have no symptoms of the disease, there is still a golden opportunity to get vaccinated.”

The top infectious diseases specialist regretted that the booster jab scheme in Tehran was not welcomed warmly.

According the health ministry, out of the over 84 million population in Iran, nearly 65 million people have received the first dose, over 58 million people have received the second dose, and a little over 30 million people have so far received the third or fourth shots of the Covid-19 as the booster jab across the nation.
