President Raisi to CBS: Nuclear agreement without guarantees meaningless

President Ebrahim Raisi

“If it’s a good deal and fair deal, we would be serious about reaching an agreement. It needs to be lasting. There need to be guarantees. If there were a guarantee, then the Americans could not withdraw from the deal,” Raisi stated in an interview with CBS 60 Minutes’ Lesley Stahl on Sunday night.

“You see, the Americans broke their promises. They did it unilaterally. They said that, ‘I am out of the deal’. Now making promises is becoming meaningless,” he added.

Asked about the peaceful uses of nuclear energy for Iran, the president noted, “Like in medicine, agriculture, oil, gas.”

“We have responded to these claims several times. They are baseless. The Islamic Republic of Iran has said many times that possessing nuclear weapons has no place in our doctrine,” the Iranian president said when asked by Stahl on the allegations that Iran has been working on nuclear weapons.

On the difference between the Donald Trump administration and the Joe Biden administration in Iran’s view, Raisi stated, “The new administration in the U.S., they claim that they are different from the Trump administration. They have said it in their messages to us. But we haven’t witnessed any changes in reality. The sanctions are very tyrannical. This is a tyranny against the people of Iran. It is important to us to have the sanctions lifted.”

When asked about American citizens detained in Iran, Raisi replied: “There are Iranian nationals also imprisoned inside the U.S. These people are only in there because they simply tried to circumvent sanctions. And the Americans, we have told them that we can talk to them about this. It can be conducted separately from the nuclear talks. It can be done between the two countries. It is a humanitarian issue. This can be negotiated.”

“No,” Raisi said about the possibility of a meeting between him and President Biden in New York, addingو “I don’t think that such a meeting would happen. I don’t believe having a meeting or a talk with him will be beneficial.”

“Do you believe the Holocaust happened,” Stahl asked the president and he answeredو “Look… Historical events should be investigated by researchers and historians. There are some signs that it happened. If so, they should allow it to be investigated and researched.”

“You see, the people of Palestine are the reality. This is the right of the people of Palestine who were forced to leave their houses and motherland. The Americans are supporting this false regime there to take root and to be established there,” Raisi continued.

“If a state shakes hands with the Zionist regime, then they are also an accomplice to their crimes,” Raisi replied when Stahl said that that Morocco, Bahrain, Sudan, and the United Arab Emirates have all recognized Israel and have relations with it. “And they are stabbing the very idea of Palestine in the back,” Raisi went on to add.

On the assassination of Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani by the US army, the Iranian president underscored, “What the then American government did, by the direct order of Trump himself, to assassinate Mr. Qassem Soleimani, this was a heinous crime. We want justice to be served. We are not going to forget about this.”

When asked if this “justice” meant an answer assassination, Raisi underlined, “That’s the type of the actions that the Americans and Zionist regimes are doing in the world, we are not going to carry out the same actions.”

Spokesman: Iran-US officials to hold no bilateral talks in New York; nuclear negotiations possible

Ebrahim Raisi

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and Deputy Foreign Minister and top nuclear negotiator Ali Bagheri Kani are among officials accompanying President Raisi during his trip to New York.

Raisi has headed for New York to attend the 77th summit of the UN General Assembly.

Speaking at his weekly press briefing, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanaani reiterated that contacts and communications over the sanctions removal and talks aimed at the revival of the Iran nuclear deal are continuing through the EU and any development will take place within this framework.

He said Bagheri’s trip has nothing to do with direct talks with US over the nuclear issue or any other matter. However, the Iranian foreign ministry spokesman did not rule out the possibility of nuclear talks on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.

He added that Iran would naturally use any opportunity to express its views regarding issues of bilateral and international interest.

Kanaani noted that Iran has never walked away from the talks and views them as a proper, logical and reasonable method to resolve differences.

The Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian on Monday said in an op-ed run by the state-run newspaper of Iran that the Islamic Republic remains committed to talks and diplomacy in order to reach a good, robust and lasting nuclear deal.

Father of Iranian woman who had heart attack in police custody demands full probe into her death

Mahsa Amini

Amjad Amini, Mahsa’s father, told Fars News Agency that Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi expressed his condolences on the phone over the tragic incident and issued an order for investigation.

He said, “We expect them to clarify the various aspects of this issue as soon as possible and follow up on the matter and not allow my daughter’s blood to be wasted in vain.”

Mahsa, 22, was on a visit to Tehran with her family when she was arrested by the special mortality police unit that enforces the dress codes for women.

She slipped into a coma on Tuesday after being approached by the police in the Iranian capital Tehran to ‘get a briefing on her clothing’ and died on Friday.

Amjad told Fars that the video released by the police cannot reveal the circumstances of her death, saying the police failure to urgently take his daughter to the hospital caused a heart attack that led to her death.

He also complained that the police failed to immediately inform her family of the situation.

Mahsa’s death has triggered nationwide public outcry and protests, blaming harsh manhandling by the mortality police forces for her death.

Rally held in Iran Kurdish city to protest death of young woman

Mahsa Amini, 22, was on a visit to Tehran with her family when she was approached by the special police unit that enforces the dress codes for women.

She slipped into a coma on Tuesday after being transferred to a police detention center in the Iranian capital Tehran to ‘get a briefing on her clothing’ and died on Friday.

The circumstances of Mahsa’s death are contested, with many protesters saying Mahsa died under torture, showing they are either not aware of the official reports on her demise or not convinced, according to Fars News Agency.

Some of the protesters reportedly sought to turn the rally ugly by shattering the parked cars’ windows or setting dumpsters ablaze, when the police intervened and made arrests, the Iranian news agency said.

Mahsa’s family has said she did not have any background medical conditions before her death, including epilepsy or brain tumor, refuting claims by Iranian Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi and a few MPs.

Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi on Sunday talked with Mahsa’s family on the phone and ordered a full probe into the incident.

Iran FM: Tehran serious about nuclear deal that secures national interests

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian

Hossein Amirabdollahian in an article in the government’s official newspaper Iran wrote that Tehran seeks an agreement that guarantees its economic benefits and has been the party that has tabled the largest number of initiatives during the Vienna talks.

He said the ball is in the court of the US and it is for Washington to make a political decision to bring the negotiations to fruition and pave the way for an agreement in the near future.

The US is yet to respond to Iran’s latest proposals on the draft text of the agreement to revive the nuclear deal.

Tehran’s call for guarantees that the US will not withdraw from the deal again and will not re-impose anti-Iran sanctions is reportedly a key bone of contention between the two sides.

Also on relations between Iran and the world countries, Amirabdollahian added the current administration has “made a new choice” based on a “correct” understanding of the international order to expand its relations with all countries around the world, while giving priority to the “look to Asia” and “focus on neighborliness”.

Iran lead negotiator to accompany Raisi to NY, ‘revives chances for EU to clinch nuclear deal’

Ali Bagheri Kani

Mohammad Marandi, a top advisor to the Iranian negotiated team, said the US stonewalling of the deal will backfire on Europeans as they have already faced fuel shortage before the winter.

Marandi in a tweet on Sunday said, “As Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator Dr. Ali Bagheri will be accompanying the President, it will be a good opportunity for the E3/EU to push the US to meaningfully resolve the few remaining issues.”

He added, “By stonewalling and foot-dragging, the US will needlessly make winter more painful.”

President Raisi is scheduled to set off for New York later on Monday to hold talks with several heads of state and deliver a speech at the General Assembly session on the “fair international order through economic multilateralism.”

Iran and the JCPOA’s remaining members are still at loggerheads after several rounds of negotiations in the Austrian capital Vienna since last year aimed at reviving the nuclear accord and lifting US-speared sanctions on Iran, as a major oil and gas producer in the world.
