Iran parliament to convene within two months for vote of confidence for ministers

Iran Parliament

Mojtaba Youssefi told IRNA news agency that Pezeshkian will be sworn in on August 4 or 5 and the president-elect will have 15 days to present his proposed ministers to the parliament for a vote of confidence.

He added that the parliament will vote for the ministers in the month of Shahrivar on the Iranian calendar, (August 22 to September 21).

As Pezeshkian is a lawmaker representing the Tabriz constituency, a parliamentary session will also be held on his resignation before the endorsement and inauguration ceremonies.

Pezeshkian was elected president of the Islamic Republic of Iran to replace the late president Ebrahim Raisi who died in a helicopter crash on May 19.

Thousands of Israelis pour into streets, demanding captive swap agreement with Palestinians

Israel Protest

Thousands in Kaplan Square in central Tel Aviv demanded a hostage deal and that the government should not miss the opportunity again, said the state-run broadcasting authority.

Protesters chanted: “Deal Now” and raised banners with the slogan.

Around 2,000 protested in Caesarea in northern Israel, demanding a hostage deal and early elections, it added.

The Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper reported that thousands demonstrated in several locations, including the Karqur intersection, Bat Hefer and Rehovot.

Demonstrators emphasized the need for a hostage deal “as soon as possible” and to not “miss the opportunity this time”, it said.

The protesters also called for early parliamentary elections.

Yedioth Ahronoth daily, citing unnamed informed sources, reported that a negotiating team “will leave next Monday to continue negotiations on the deal”.

The head of Mossad, David Barnea, traveled to Doha on Friday for meetings with Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani regarding the hostage deal and cease-fire in Gaza.

Upon his return to Tel Aviv, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office announced that a negotiating team will depart for Qatar next week to continue discussions on the deal.

Israel estimates around 120 Israelis are held by the Palestinian resistance group, Hamas, in Gaza.

Israel, flouting a UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate cease-fire, has faced international condemnation amid its continued brutal offensive on Gaza since an Oct. 7 attack by Hamas.

More than 38,000 Palestinians have since been killed, mostly women and children, and over 87,700 others injured, according to local health authorities.

Nearly nine months into the Israeli war, vast tracts of Gaza lie in ruins amid a crippling blockade of food, clean water and medicine.

Assailants in deadly attack on ballot box convoy in southeast Iran arrested

Iran Police

The Directorate General of Intelligence Unit in Sistan and Baluchistan announced on Saturday that the eight-member team involved in the attack that led to the death of two security forces following the first round of the snap presidential polls in Iran have been arrested.

The statement reads, “The cowardly terrorist attack on the vehicle carrying the ballot boxes of the people of Jakigur, Rask County, on the morning of June 29, led to the martyrdom and injury of several defenders of security.”

Immediately after the incident, intelligence units started an operation across the province to identify and arrest the terrorist agents, which led to the arrest of all eight operational members of the terrorist group.

Several weapons, ammunition, grenades, handheld radios, and significant amounts of explosives were also discovered in their hideout, according to the statement.

It added, “According to the reliable information, the arrested terrorists were guided from one of the neighboring countries and they were making preparations to carry out a large-scale terrorist operation in the following days.”

Israeli attack on UN school used as shelter in Gaza kills at least 16

Gaza War

In a statement on Saturday, the Government Media Office said more than 75 people also were injured in the attack on al-Jaouni school in central Gaza’s Nuseirat refugee camp.

“We condemn the Israeli occupation [for] committing these ongoing crimes and massacres against civilians, children and women,” it added.

The Nuseirat facility, run by the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), is the latest school to be bombed by the Israeli military since the Gaza war began in early October.

At least 38,098 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks across Gaza since October 7 and the besieged enclave faces dire shortages of food, water, medicine and other humanitarian supplies.

On Saturday, dozens of Palestinians, including five journalists, were killed as the Israeli military stepped up its bombardment of the territory.

Videos taken at the scene of the attack on the UNRWA school-turned-shelter in Nuseirat showed twisted metal at the collapsed building. A young boy could be seen sifting through pools of blood on the ground.

Footage shot at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in nearby Deir el-Balah and verified by Al Jazeera’s Sanad agency also showed children and young people being rushed from ambulances.

They included a girl with a bandaged arm, another with a bloodied face and a boy bandage across his head. Emergency workers also tried to cover two bodies as they were quickly brought into the medical complex.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza said in a statement that 50 injured Palestinians were taken to the hospital.

In a statement shared on social media on Saturday night, the Israeli army said its air force “struck several terrorists” in the area of al-Jaouni school.

Last month, an Israeli attack on an UN-linked school – also in Nuseirat refugee camp – killed at least 40 people and injured dozens more, according to local authorities.

Musab, a 17-year-old survivor of the early June bombing of the UNRWA Nuseirat Boys’ Preparatory School, told the UN agency that his father was killed after “missiles rained down” on the family.

“Concrete slabs fell on us, and suddenly, we found ourselves surrounded by the dead and injured. All of my family members were either injured or killed,” Musab said in testimony shared by UNRWA.

“We were sleeping, and at two in the morning, missiles rained down on us. They pulled us from under the rubble, and all we saw were shrapnel, debris, and dust. I am in shock and can’t comprehend that my father is dead! How will we live?”

Russian ATM

Mohammadreza Farzin added that this agreement was reached at a meeting between expert delegations of the two sides.

Farzin said after finalizing the requirements for the connection of Russia’s Karti Mir payment network to Iran’s Shetab network, this project entered the operational phase.

According to the Central Bank’s governor, with the monetary agreement, exchanges between Iran and Russia will be based on the local currencies, that is, the rial the ruble, and there is no need to use another currency.

Economic experts say Iran and Russia have now learned how to blunt the impact of the sanctions and keep their economies afloat.

Iran’s president-elect says a new chapter has begun for serving people

Masoud Pezeshkian

Pezeshkian was speaking to a group of journalists at the mausoleum of the late founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran Imam Khomeini in southern Tehran.

He also paid tribute to defeated candidate Saeed Jalili, telling him, “The rivalry has come to an end and it’s time to be friends”.

Pezeshkian further congratulated the Iranian people and said Iranians took a long stride in the election runoff and created an opportunity for the country.

The president-elect said he views as equal those who voted for him and those who did not as well as the people who declined to vote.

Pezeshkian stressed that the big test for Iran is to overcome dilemmas and crises.

He then thanked the leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution for the role he played in the election, saying Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei paved the way for a healthy election.

Pezeshkian stressed that a new chapter has started for serving Iran and for fulfilling his own promises.

He underlined that he views the people’s vote for him as a heavy responsibility and committed himself to listen to people’s voice and that he seeks national solidarity and dialog so all Iranians return to the arena to solve problems.

The president-elect voiced hope that the Iranian parliament will be ready to work with the government to overcome the crises.

Iran’s Leader: West moral, political failures major world issue

Ayatollah Khamenei

In a message addressed to the Union of the Islamic Students Associations in Europe and America, the Leader hailed the students’ deep-rooted and reputable union and termed the continuation of their activities as a promising phenomenon.

“This collective presence – in its own capacity – can play a role in the current complex issues of the world. The ability to have an impact on major issues depends more on the motivation, faith, and confidence of the activists involved, than on their numbers or how well-equipped they are and this valuable asset, praise God, is present and evident in you, the faithful and Revolutionary Iranian youth,” Ayatollah Khamenei stated.

The Leader noted that students are already familiar with important global issues and the world’s fresh and old wounds, the most recent of which is the unprecedented tragedy in Gaza.

“The most prominent is the moral, political, and social failures of the West, its politicians, and Western civilization. The most instructive is the inability of liberal democracy to establish freedom of expression and their fatal neglect of the issue of economic and social justice,” Ayatollah Khamenei stressed.

The Leader also referred to the widespread pro-Palestinian protests, especially among students in the United States and Europe, as an important current issue.

“The West Asia region and our beloved country also face numerous small and large issues.”

“All of these are grounds for thought, work, and initiative for a blessed organization like your union. I pray for your success from the Almighty and Wise God,” Ayatollah Khamenei added.

Five journalists killed by Israel in Gaza

Gaza War

On Saturday, Gaza’s Government Media Office announced separate Israeli raids killed three journalists in the Nuseirat refugee camp in the centre of the territory and two in Gaza City, raising to at least 158 the number of media workers killed since the current war erupted on October 7.

Those who were killed in Nuseirat were identified as Amjad Jahjouh and Rizq Abu Ashkian, both from the Palestine Media Agency, and Wafa Abu Dabaan from the Islamic University Radio in Gaza.

Abu Dabaan was married to Jahjouh. Their children were also killed during the strike. At least 10 people were killed in that raid on Nuseirat.

Palestinian journalists Saadi Madoukh and Ahmed Sukkar were killed on Friday following an Israeli raid that targeted a home of the Madoukh family in the Daraj neighbourhood of Gaza City.

Before the latest deadly attacks, Israel’s war on Gaza was already considered the deadliest conflict for journalists and media workers in the world.

Gaza’s Ministry of Health said on Saturday that 87 people were killed across the enclave over the last 48 hours, including the five journalists, bringing to at least 38,098 the number of people killed in the last nine months.

More than 87,700 people have been injured in Israel’s military offensive during the same period, the ministry added.
