Iran parliamen to support new administration, says speaker in meeting with president-elect

Pezeshkian and Qalibaf

During the meeting, Ghalibaf emphasized the  parliament’s support for the fourteenth administration. He highlighted the parliament’s intrinsic role in providing empathetic and effective oversight of the new administration to ensure the country’s progress and the people’s welfare.

Pezeshkian also expressed his gratitude for the enthusiastic participation of the people in the election, honoring the memory of Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi, the late Iranian president.

He stressed the importance of genuine unity and synergy among all governmental bodies to address the people’s problems and advance the nation.

Ghalibaf was Pezeshkian’s rival in the first round of the presidential vote, held on June 28.

Erdogan says to invite Assad for talks to restore Turkey-Syria relations

Erdogan and Assad

“We will extend our invitation (to Assad); with this invitation, we want to restore Turkey-Syria relations to the same level as in the past. Our invitation may be extended at any time,” Erdogan said Sunday, according to a presidency readout of an interview by Turkish media.

Turkey severed ties with Syria in 2011 after the outbreak of the war, in which it supported militant groups looking to oust Assad.

It has carried out several cross-border military operations against militants it says threaten its national security, and formed a “safe zone” in northern Syria where Turkish troops are now stationed.

Speaking to reporters on his flight back from Berlin, Erdogan also added Ankara would reciprocate any positive steps from Damascus, and that Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and Iraqi Prime Minister could contribute to facilitating the contact.

“We have now arrived at a point where if Bashar Assad takes a step towards improving relations with Turkey, we will also show that approach towards him.”

“Putin and the Iraqi prime minister have an approach for talks to be in Turkey. We are talking about mediation everywhere, why not with our neighbour?” he was quoted as saying by the Turkish presidency.

Erdogan in June did not rule out a possible meeting with Assad to revive relations.

Syrian officials however have repeatedly stressed that any normalization in ties can only come after Turkey agrees to pull out thousands of forces from the rebel-held northwest.

UN says children spend 8 hours per day carrying food, water in Gaza

Gaza War

“Children in #Gaza can spend 6-8 hours a day collecting water & food, often carrying heavy weights & walking long distances,” the agency wrote on X.

“Sanitation facilities & infrastructure are severely compromised, forcing thousands of families to rely on seawater to wash, clean & even drink,” it added.

Israel, flouting a UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate cease-fire, has faced international condemnation amid its continued brutal offensive on Gaza since an Oct. 7 attack by the Palestinian group, Hamas.

More than 38,000 Palestinians have since been killed, mostly women and children, and over 87,700 others injured, according to local health authorities.

Nearly nine months into the Israeli war, vast tracts of Gaza lie in ruins amid a crippling blockade of food, clean water and medicine.

Iran Leader eulogizes late President Raisi’s administration of ‘endeavor, hope’

Ayatollah Khamenei Raisi administration

The Leader received members of the outgoing administration on Sunday in a farewell meeting.

The meeting comes a day after reformist candidate Massoud Pezeshkian was elected president in a presidential runoff to succeed the late president Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash along with his accompanying delegation on May 19.

Ayatollah Khamenei said, “Among the prominent features of the Raisi administration was it was an administration of the people, something which should serve as a role model for all officials.”

The Leader stated that President Raisi was determined to serve all walks of people and firmly believed in domestic capabilities and experts.

He also commended the late president for “clearly expressing his religious and revolution-based positions, tirelessness, not getting jdiscouraged, respect for interaction and dignity in foreign policy, making efforts to implement major plans, humbleness, tolerance and spirituality.”

The Leader also viewed President Raisi’s foreign policy in a positive light, saying his diplomatic interactions brought honor to the country and the nation.

Russia says to probe newly reported war crimes in Ukraine

Russia Ukraine War

On Saturday, the New York Times published a report describing Russian prisoners of war being executed by the so-called Chosen Company – an international mercenary unit led by a former US Army National Guard soldier. In one incident, a seriously injured Russian serviceman was allegedly killed while surrendering and pleading for help.

“Investigators of the Russian Investigative Committee will look into more crimes by Ukraine’s armed formations,” the agency stated on their Telegram channel on Saturday, noting that “information is being circulated in the media about a crime committed against a wounded Russian prisoner of war who was killed with a shot to the head”.

Earlier in the day, Russia’s ambassador-at-large for Ukraine’s crimes, Rodion Miroshnik, said that “all the data cited by the publication will be verified and analyzed” by law enforcement agencies. He added that Moscow would also demand that international organizations with representatives in Ukraine verify the information, which, if confirmed, would qualify “as a violation of key norms and principles of humanitarian law, amounting to war crimes”.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova commented on the NYT article, noting that although the atrocities of the Kiev regime have long been known, the US media previously chose to ignore multiple reports of human rights violations submitted by the Russian Foreign Ministry and circulated in the UN Security Council.

“It is amusing to watch how American journalists and media platforms pretend they knew nothing about the abuse of the peaceful population of Donbass, now new Russian regions, by the Kiev regime. They act as if they are unaware of the torture inflicted on people by the Ukrainian army and security forces. Ridiculous,” Zakharova stated in an interview with the Russian newspaper Izvestia, published on Sunday.

Last year, Moscow launched an investigation into alleged war crimes committed by French mercenaries, after a photo surfaced showing three Russian POWs who were shot at point-blank range.

According to the Investigative Committee, more than 3,100 foreign mercenaries are currently fighting in Ukraine, most of them US, Canadian and British citizens. Moscow has repeatedly warned that mercenaries are not viewed as combatants under international law and “the best thing” they can hope for if captured alive is “a trial and maximum prison terms”.

Iran’s ex-ministers Zarif, Azari Jahromi laud man for piggybacking 120-year-old father to vote

Pezeshkian Zarif Azari Jahromi

Zarif and Azari Jahromi, who were among the staunch supporters of Pezeshkian since the start of the electoral campaign, thanked Mr. Ghanbari whose picture with his old father in the southern Iranian province of Khuzestan went viral.

Underlining the significance of the vote, Ghanbari said, “I was an RPG shooter during the war (in the 1980s with Iraq) and my vote was like an RPG.”

Ghanbari sounded upbeat that the election results in favor of reformist President-elect Pezeshkian would save the Iranian nation from “the pains and sorrows.”

He also hoped that the relations with the world would be restored when Pezeshkian comes to office.

Azari Jahromi and Zarif said the move by the man “stemmed from his pure intentions and was a valuable asset for the country.”

Pezeshkian hosted Mokhber in his office in Tehran to get an update on running the affairs in the country.

He expressed gratitude to the acting president who took over after the late President Ebrahim Raisi died in a helicopter crash on May 19.

In the largely ceremonial meeting, the elected president said he was ready to receive views and proposals from Jalili, who was also once the lead nuclear negotiator and secretary of the Supreme National Security Council.

Officials say Hamas clears way for a possible Gaza ceasefire after dropping key demand

Gaza War

The apparent compromise by the Palestinian group could deliver the first pause in fighting since November and set the stage for further talks on ending a devastating nine months of war. But all sides cautioned that a deal is still not guaranteed.

The two officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss ongoing negotiations, said Washington’s phased agreement would start with a “full and complete” six-week cease-fire during which older, sick and female hostages would be released in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.

During those 42 days, Israeli soldiers would withdraw from densely populated areas of Gaza and allow the return of displaced people to their homes in northern Gaza, the officials added.

A senior Hamas official, also speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss negotiations, later told The Associated Press that female soldiers would be among those released in the first phase.

Over that period, Hamas, Israel and mediators would negotiate the terms of the second phase that could see the release of the remaining male hostages, both civilians and soldiers, the first two officials stated. In return, Israel would free additional Palestinian prisoners and detainees. The third phase would include the return of any remaining hostages, including bodies of the dead, and the start of a yearslong reconstruction project.

Hamas still wants written guarantees from mediators that Israel will continue to negotiate a permanent cease-fire deal once the first phase goes into effect, the two officials said.

The first Hamas official told the AP the group’s approval came after it received “verbal commitments and guarantees” from the mediators that the war won’t be resumed and that negotiations will continue until a permanent cease-fire is reached.

“Now we want these guarantees on paper,” that official added.

Months of on-again off-again cease-fire talks have stumbled over Hamas’ demand that any deal include a complete end to the war. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has offered to pause the fighting but not end it until Israel reaches its goals of destroying Hamas’ military and governing capabilities and returning all hostages held by the group.

Israel, flouting a United Nations Security Council resolution demanding an immediate cease-fire, has faced international condemnation amid its continued brutal offensive on Gaza since an Oct. 7 attack by Hamas.

More than 38,000 Palestinians have since been killed, mostly women and children, and over 87,700 others injured, according to local health authorities.

Nearly nine months into the Israeli war, vast tracts of Gaza lie in ruins amid a crippling blockade of food, clean water and medicine.

Human rights organizations have warned that thousands of people in the besieged enclave are facing the risk of famine amid ongoing Israeli devastating onslaught.
