President Abbas says UN failed to resolve Palestine issue due to US pressure

“The UN General Assembly and Security Council passed over 1,000 resolutions on the Palestinian issue after 1947, but the UN eventually failed to accomplish its mission due to pressure from the US as it was unable to adopt a unified resolution that would ensure the implementation of the Palestinian people’s rights,” Abbas pointed out.

The head of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) also emphasized that he saw attempts to force the Palestinians out of their land as unacceptable.

He noted that the UN International Court of Justice had previously declared Israel’s ongoing settlement activity to be unlawful.

“The decision requires the UN General Assembly and Security Council, as well as all countries of the world, to take measures to make Israel stop this activity because it violates international law,” he added.

Abbas also expressed hope that the Palestinian people would eventually get “their own independent country.”

The Palestinian president arrived in Moscow on Monday at the Russian leader’s invitation. Palestinian Ambassador to Moscow Abdel Hafiz Nofal had told TASS that the primary goal of the PNA chief’s visit to Moscow was to discuss the situation in the Middle East.

Putin also told Abbas that Moscow was “concerned” about civilian deaths in Gaza.

“We are concerned above all about civilian losses,” Putin said, according to images shown on Russian state television.

“We are doing everything … to support Palestine and the Palestinian people,” he added.

The only way to create “long-lasting, reliable, stable peace in the region” is implementation of all UN resolutions and the “creation of a fully-fledged Palestinian state”.

Iran wants top gambler Sobhani extradited from Spain

Kazem Gharibabadi, in a letter to Ali Bagheri the Iranian acting Foreign Minister, demanded fugitive Sobhani be extradited from Spain on charges of gambling, betting, money laundering, defrauding Iranian teenagers, and abusing children.

Gharibabadi criticized the Spanish government’s inaction although Iran has sent the required information on Sobhani and called for his extradition.

The letter urges the acting foreign minister to take serious steps to expedite the legal measures on the case.

Mohammad Javad Sobhani, alias Sasha Sobhani, 36, is the son of an Iranian diplomat who has disavowed his son and cut off his ties due to his ill-fame.

During his stay in various countries over the past years, Sasha has released controversial videos to flash his luxurious lifestyle and made vitriolic comments on mainly social issues that run afoul of the Iranian-Islamic culture.

Ukraine claims has seized 1,000 sq km in Kursk attack

Russia Ukraine War

With Russia still struggling to repel the surprise assault a week after it began, Ukraine’s top commander, Oleksandr Syrskyi, briefed President Volodymyr Zelensky by video link and said the advance into Russian territory was ongoing.

“We continue to conduct an offensive operation in the Kursk region. Currently, we control about 1,000 square kilometres of the territory of the Russian Federation,” he said in a video published on Zelensky’s Telegram account.

He provided scant other detail, continuing Kyiv’s strategy of silence that contrasts starkly with last year’s counteroffensive which was known about for months in advance and which foundered on Russian defensive lines.

Syrskyi spoke a few hours after Alexei Smirnov, Russia’s acting regional governor of Kursk, estimated that Kyiv’s forces had taken control of 28 settlements in an incursion that was about 12km deep and 40km wide.

Though less than half Syrkyi’s estimate of the Ukrainian gains, Smirnov’s remarks were a striking public admission of a major Russian setback more than 29 months since it launched a full-scale invasion of its smaller neighbour.

It was not possible to verify independently the claims made by either side.

In a televised meeting with government officials, Putin stated that “one of the obvious goals of the enemy is to sow discord, strife, intimidate people, destroy the unity and cohesion of Russian society”.

“The main task is, of course, for the defence ministry to dislodge the enemy from our territories,” he continued, adding that Kyiv was attempting to gain a better negotiating position in potential talks to end the war and to halt Moscow’s offensive in eastern Ukraine.

121,000 people have fled the Kursk region since the start of the fighting, which has killed at least 12 civilians and injured 121 more, regional governor Alexei Smirnov told the meeting.

Authorities in Kursk announced on Monday they were widening their evacuation area to include Belovsky district, home to 14,000 residents. The neighbouring Belgorod region also said it was evacuating its border district of Krasnoyaruzhsky.

Putin said Russia would respond by showing “unanimous support for all those in distress” and claimed there had been an increase in men signing up to fight. “The enemy will receive a worthy response,” he said.

Zelensky told Ukrainians in his nightly address on Monday that the operation was a matter of Ukrainian security and the Kursk region had been used by Russia to launch many strikes against Ukraine.

He added Ukraine’s northeastern Sumy region, which lies across the border from Kursk region, had been struck by Russia almost 2,100 times since 1 June.

“Russia must be forced to make peace if Putin wants to fight so badly,” Zelensky said. “Russia brought war to others, and now it is coming home,” he added.

The Ukrainian attack comes after months of slow but steady advances by Russian forces in the east that has forced Ukraine’s troops on to the back foot as they try to withstand Russia’s heavy use of gliding bombs and assault troops.

Former Ukrainian defence minister Andriy Zagorodnyuk told Reuters the Kursk operation looked like it aimed to distract Russian forces and its leadership from the eastern fronts.

“The apparent goal is to create a problem area for Russia, which will distract its forces and its leadership’s attention and resources from where they’re trying to succeed right now.”

It was not clear if that goal had immediately succeeded. Russia’s defence ministry said on Monday its troops had “accelerated the speed of advance” in the eastern Donetsk region and taken the hamlet of Lysychne in their push towards the city of Pokrovsk.

A Ukrainian security official meanwhile told AFP that Kyiv was “not pulling back troops from the [Donetsk] area”, while “the intensity of Russian attacks has gone down a little bit”.

The Ukrainian official added he expected Russia would “in the end” stop the Kursk incursion.

The combat inside Russia has also rekindled questions about whether Ukraine is using weaponry supplied by NATO members. Some western countries have balked at allowing Ukraine to use their military aid to hit Russian soil, fearing it would fuel an escalation that might drag Russia and NATO into war.

Though it’s not clear what weapons Ukraine is using across the border, Russian media widely reported that American Bradley and German Marder armoured infantry vehicles were there. The claim can not be independently verified.

Russia claims US working to replace Zelensky with “less corrupt” figure

Volodymyr Zelensky

“In the current situation, Washington is working on options to replace the Ukrainian leader with a more manageable and less corrupt figure who would suit most Western allies,” the statement said.

Zelensky is taking “insane steps” that threaten to escalate the situation far beyond the borders of Ukraine, the SVR added.

The United States considers former Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov a suitable candidate to replace Zelensky.

“The former Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, Arsen Avakov, is currently being considered as a suitable candidate. The US considers Avakov’s ‘strengths’ to be his close ties with Ukrainian nationalist formations and his continuing contacts with the leaders of European countries,” the statement read.

Moreover, the US administration is planning to launch a powerful information campaign to discredit Zelensky in order to force him to leave his post, the SVR said.

“The US administration has already instructed affiliated NGOs to work out the scenario of Avakov’s coming to power in Ukraine. Now this issue is being discussed with the leaders of the leading Ukrainian opposition parties … as well as with a number of influential deputies of the Verkhovna Rada from the ruling Servant of the People party,” the statement noted.

Israeli settlers raid Al-Aqsa Mosque with police protection

Israeli Settlers

Dozens of Israelis, led by ministers, prayed at Al-Aqsa Mosque during a large raid on Tuesday, violating decades-old arrangements that stipulate only Muslims can worship at the site in Jerusalem’s Old City.

National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, who was among the crowds, stated: “Our policy is to allow Jewish prayer at the Temple Mount.”

Al-Aqsa Mosque is referred to as Temple Mount in Judaism and is considered holy to Jews.

For decades, a delicate status quo has governed worship and visits to the site, permitting only Muslims to pray in its courtyards and prayer halls.

Non-Muslims have been allowed to visit under the supervision of the Waqf, a joint Jordanian-Palestinian Islamic trust that manages the mosque’s affairs.

However, Israeli authorities have long bypassed the Waqf, allowing Israeli settlers and ultra-nationalists to storm the site under the protection of heavily armed forces, often preceded by the forceful removal of Muslim worshippers.

Israeli police have also been accused in recent years of allowing Jewish prayer at the site.

The Israeli government has long insisted that it remains committed to maintaining the status quo.

However, Ben Gvir’s comments on Tuesday are likely to spark condemnation from Palestinians, who have long accused Israel of attempting to undermine the mosque’s Islamic identity.

Palestinians accuse government-backed right-wing groups of working to divide Al-Aqsa Mosque into two parts, one for Jews and the other for Muslims.

Israeli organisations known as “Temple Mount groups” have facilitated raids on Al-Aqsa Mosque, pushed for an increased Jewish presence there and advocated for the destruction of the mosque and the Dome of the Rock to make way for a Third Temple.

Dozens of Temple Mount activists organise and participate in daily raids of the mosque under the protection of Israeli police.

The raids often draw large crowds on Jewish holidays.

According to the Waqf, more than 2,250 people participated in Tuesday’s raid, which coincided with Tisha B’Av, an annual fast day marking the destruction of the two ancient Jewish temples that once stood on the plateau where Al-Aqsa Mosque is located.

The Palestinian Authority and Jordan both issued statements condemning the raid, calling it a violation of international law.

Israel’s control of East Jerusalem, including the Old City, violates several principles of international law, which stipulate that an occupying power has no sovereignty over the territory it occupies and cannot make any permanent changes there.

Dozens of people performed Jewish prayers, raised Israeli flags and sang the national anthem during Tuesday’s raid, actions that are widely seen as violations of the long-standing status quo.

At least two government ministers and a lawmaker attended the raid, including Ben Gvir.

While touring the site, Ben Gvir said in a recorded message: “We are on Tisha B’Av, the Temple Mount, coming to mark the destruction of the temple.”

“It needs to be said with sincerity: there is very significant progress here in governance and sovereignty. As I have said, our policy is to enable prayer.”

The office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded to Ben Gvir’s comments, saying ministers cannot set their own policies and that the incident was a “deviation from the status quo”.

“Israel’s policy at the Temple Mount hasn’t changed – this is how it has been and how it will continue to be,” his office announced.

However, despite many people openly praying and violating the rules, Israeli police have not announced any arrests.

Ben Gvir hit back shortly after the prime minister’s statement, stating that the “Temple Mount is a sovereign area in the state of Israel’s capital” and that there were no laws that permit “engaging in racist discrimination against Jews at the Temple Mount or anywhere else in Israel”.

“The national security minister’s policy is to enable freedom of worship for Jews at all places, including the Temple Mount, and Jews will continue to do so in the future as well,” he added.

Ben Gvir faced criticism from both the Israeli opposition and ultra-Orthodox coalition partners, who oppose Jewish visits to Al-Aqsa Mosque for religious reasons.

Yair Lapid, the leader of the opposition, said Ben Gvir’s remarks endangered the lives of Israeli citizens and soldiers.

“The bunch of irresponsible extremists in the government is trying to drag Israel to an all-out regional war,” he added.

Moshe Gafni, a member of the ultra-Orthodox United Torah Judaism party, said Ben Gvir’s comments “harm the sanctity and the status quo of the Temple Mount”.

Amit Halevi, an MP from Netanyahu’s Likud party, was also present at the raid.

He said in a statement that he joined the crowds to pray for victory in the war, which he said was a “war for the Mount, for God, against an enemy that in the name of religion fills the world with murderousness”.

Iran not asking for permission from West in using recognized rights: Spokesperson

Nasser Kanaani

Kanaani on Tuesday slammed a statement released by three European countries, France, Germany, and the UK, on the developments in the region.

He said, “The statement by the heads of the three European states was published at a time when the Israeli regime continues to commit all kinds of international crimes, including genocide and war crimes against the defenseless Palestinian nation, due to the indifference of the Western countries supporting the regime.”

“The impunity of the Zionist authorities has added to their shamelessness in committing the most wicked offenses and international crimes,” he added.

Kanaani also pointed to the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and blasted the United Nations and the UN Security Council for their failure to adopt a deterrent move against the criminal Zionist regime for more than ten months.

He also warned that the Zionist regime’s inhumane crimes against the Palestinian nation and its assassinations overseas take on new dimensions every day.

The Iranian diplomat added, “Surprisingly, no practical and effective measures have been taken by Western countries, including Germany, France, and the UK, to stop or deal with the crimes.”

Kanaani further noted, “The statement by the three mentioned countries, without making any objection against the Zionist regime’s offenses and international crimes, shamelessly demands the Islamic Republic of Iran not take any deterrent measures against the regime that has violated its sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson stressed, “Such demands are void of political logic, in complete contradiction to the principles and rules of international law, and excessive.”

He said the trio’s request is regarded as a “public and practical support for the origin of international crimes and terrorism in the region, and as an encouragement and reward to those who order and commit genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and terrorism.”

Meanwhile, Kanaani stressed, “If the mentioned countries are really looking for peace and stability in the region, they should once and for all stand against the belligerence and adventurism of the apartheid Israeli regime, and immediately stop the war against Gaza and the odious and horrific slaughter of Palestinian women, children and defenselessness citizens.”

“The Islamic Republic of Iran is firm and resolute in defending its sovereignty and national security, as well as helping to establish lasting stability in the region and creating deterrence against the real origin and main source of insecurity and terrorism in the region,” Kanaani stated and emphasized, “it won’t ask for permission from anyone to use its established rights.”

The spokesperson for the Iranian diplomatic service reiterated that the inaction of the states and the UN Security Council towards the savagery of the brutal Zionist regime, and also the large-scale political and military support by the Western governments to the regime, is the main factor in the spread of the crisis in the region.

He held the supporters of the Israeli regime responsible for its ongoing and unrestricted crimes in Gaza and West Asia.

Analyst: Iran won’t outsource right to legitimate defense against Israel

Ismail Haniyeh

In an interview with Tejarat News on Monday, Reza Nasri, an international law expert, said Iran has kept Israel, the US and Western states on the edge over the timing of its response to the Israeli assassination.

Nasri, however, dismissed reports that Iran might use its proxies in the region for reprisal in order to prevent a wider conflict, saying the Iranian military will directly get involved.

The pundit also noted that the assassination of the Palestinian resistance movement’s political leader blew back in the face of the Israelis after he was succeeded by Yahya al-Sinwar, the mastermind of the Hamas-led operation in Israel on October 7 last year.

“Even Israel was surprised by the assassination of Haniyeh and his subsequent replacement with Yahya al-Senwar,” Nasri said, explaining, “If a ceasefire agreement is reached in Gaza, it means it has made a deal with a person who directly led the October 7 operation, and it means a catastrophic political failure for Israel and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu personally.”

Israeli PM office accuses defense minister of adopting ‘anti-Israel narrative’ over Gaza war

Benjamin Netanyahu Yoav Gallant

Earlier, during a Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee session in Israel’s parliament, Gallant was asked why Israel had not yet initiated a broader war with Lebanon.

He responded that the “conditions today for war in Lebanon are unlike those at the beginning of the war”, referring to the situation following the 7 October Hamas-led attack and Israel’s subsequent war on Gaza.

“I hear all the heroes with the war drums, the ‘absolute victory’ and this nonsense,” Gallant added.

“Absolute victory” is a war slogan often used by Netanyahu and right-wing Israelis, implying the total destruction of Hamas in Gaza.

In response to Gallant’s remarks, Netanyahu’s office said: “When Gallant adopts the anti-Israeli narrative, he harms the chances of reaching a deal for the release of the hostages.”

“He should have criticised [Hamas leader Yahya] Sinwar, who refuses to send a delegation for negotiations and remains the only obstacle to a hostage deal,” Netanyahu’s office added.

“Israel has only one option: to achieve a decisive victory, which means eliminating Hamas’ military and governmental capabilities and freeing our hostages – and this victory will be achieved.”

Netanyahu and Gallant have reportedly clashed since the war began.

Last month, Israel’s Channel 12 reported that the prime minister barred Gallant from leading a meeting with defence chiefs on a ceasefire deal because Netanyahu felt sidelined.

Gallant was angry about the move, saying that it made it difficult for Israel’s security establishment to prepare for negotiations, according to Channel 12.

Gallant and Netanyahu also clashed over the issue of extending mandatory military service to include ultra-Orthodox communities, which had previously been exempt.

The International Criminal Court’s prosecutor is currently seeking arrest warrants for both men for their involvement in Israel’s war on Gaza.

Gallant and Netanyahu face charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity, including the starvation of civilians as a method of war, wilfully causing great suffering, wilful killing, intentional attacks on a civilian population and extermination, among other charges.

The number of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces in Gaza since 7 October has risen to 39,900, according to the Palestinian health ministry.

The ministry also reported that at least 92,200 have been wounded in the enclave since the war began.

Western states call for restraint amid expected Iran response to Israel

Ismail Haniyeh

The leaders of the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Italy issued a joint statement on Monday expressing their “support for ongoing efforts to de-escalate tensions” in West Asia and secure a ceasefire in the war on Gaza.

“We called on Iran to stand down its ongoing threats of a military attack against Israel and discussed the serious consequences for regional security should such an attack take place,” the statement said.

The Western powers also endorsed the latest push by the US, Qatar and Egypt to broker a truce agreement to end the 10-month-long war.

Global concern that Israel’s war will escalate into an all-out regional conflict multiplied after the assassination last month of Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, and of Fuad Shukr, a top commander from the Lebanese group Hezbollah, in Beirut.

Iran and Hezbollah maintain they are not seeking an all-out war but they remain ready should it break out.

Earlier on Monday, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer issued a separate joint statement calling for de-escalation.

“We call on Iran and its allies to refrain from attacks that would further escalate regional tensions and jeopardise the opportunity to agree a ceasefire and the release of hostages,” it noted.

“The fighting must end now, and all hostages still detained by Hamas must be released. The people of Gaza need urgent and unfettered delivery and distribution of aid,” it added.

Scholz and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also held separate phone calls with with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Monday, the German and UK governments announced on Monday.

Starmer asked Pezeshkian to refrain from attacking Israel, saying that war was not in anyone’s interest, the prime minister’s office said.

Scholz “appealed to President Pezeshkian to do everything possible to prevent a further military escalation”, expressed “great concern about the danger of a regional conflagration in the Middle East” and stated “the spiral of violence in the Middle East must be broken now”, his spokesman Wolfgang Buechner said in a statement.

John Kirby, the White House national security spokesperson, stated on Monday that the US was prepared for an attack to take place as soon as this week.

“We have to be prepared for what could be a significant set of attacks.”

Iran is expected to “harshly punish” Israel, which it blames for the assassination of Haniyeh in Tehran.

Hezbollah has also promised retribution after Israel admitted it killed Shukr in Beirut.

President Pezeshkian: Mutual respect, friendship key to boosted Iran-Europe ties

Masoud Pezeshkian Olaf Scholz

In a phone conversation with Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Monday, Pezeshkian underscored the need to remove obstacles in the way of promoting relations between Iran and Europe.

He said regional and international peace, stability and security are a centerpiece to Iran’s foreign policy.

Referring to the war in Gaza, the Iranian president stated the Israeli regime is violating all international treaties and regulations and pressing ahead with its genocide in the besieged Palestinian territory.

Pezeshkian added the world nations expect European countries, not least Germany, to play an effective role in ending the Israeli regime’s genocidal war in Gaza instead of supporting it.

The Israeli regime also conducted terrorist acts in other countries and poses a serious threat to regional security and global peace, he said, apparently referring to the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the political bureau of the Hamas resistance movement, in Tehran on July 31.

“Iran will never succumb to pressure, sanctions, bullying and aggression but reserves its right to respond to aggressors in accordance with international principles,” Pezeshkian stated.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has warned the regime of a “harsh response” for Haniyeh’s assassination, saying it is the Islamic Republic’s duty to avenge the Palestinian resistance leader’s blood.

The German chancellor, for his part, stated Berlin is keen to promote relations with Iran in all fields.

Scholz added the establishment of peace and security in the region is among his country’s priorities. He placed a premium on ending Israel’s campaign of death, destruction and genocide in Gaza.
