Black Muslim groups shun Harris for US president over Gaza war

Kamala Harris

The new statement, first reported by Middle East Eye, is the latest effort from Muslim community leaders – from imams to scholars, to activists to politicians – telling voters not to choose Harris in the upcoming November election over her unwillingness to commit to policy changes that would hold Israel accountable for its ongoing war on Gaza and now Lebanon, which has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians and Lebanese people.

“Although some Muslim Americans have nevertheless argued that our community must support Vice President Harris because of her positions on domestic issues or their belief that Donald Trump might be even worse on issues like Gaza, we respectfully disagree with their conclusion,” the statement said.

“As Muslims obliged to uphold justice and as Black Americans whose ancestors experienced the worst of crimes, genocide must be our red line.”

It adds that “we simply cannot support a candidate who participated in a genocide and now refuses to lay out any plan to end that genocide”.

The statement comes after a series of different statements and letters from leading figures and organisations in the wider Muslim-American community were published in recent weeks endorsing or shunning candidates for the US 2024 election.

On 20 September, a coalition of leading Muslim organisations in the US released a statement calling on voters to vote for candidates that both support a ceasefire in Gaza and an arms embargo against Israel.

Then, on 30 September, dozens of imams from across the country signed a letter endorsing a call for Muslims to vote third-party in the election, with the goal of sending the Democratic Party a message about their outrage over the Biden-Harris administration’s steadfast support for Israel’s war on the besieged enclave. That letter has more than 130 signatories.

A week later, the Muslim-led Abandon Harris movement endorsed the Green Party’s Jill Stein for president.

“We call on Muslim voters to support only a pro-ceasefire and pro-arms embargo presidential candidate, as well as candidates down the ballot who support other just policies, including economic justice, religious freedom, healthcare for all, humane immigration policy, reforming the criminal justice system, and racial equality,” the statement from Black Muslim leaders read.

A copy of the statement was shared with MEE and organisers say they plan to share it on the same website hosting the previous letter from leading imams.

So far, 47 people from 17 states and Washington DC have signed the letter, and organisers of the effort say they are working to gather additional signatures.

While some Black Muslim leaders have expressed support for Harris, recent polling by the Yaqeen Institute has shown that only 32 percent of Black Muslims plan on voting for her in this upcoming election.

Many leading Black American activists and intellectuals throughout the past several decades have supported Palestinian rights and spoken against Zionism and US support for Israel, including Malcolm X, Kwame Ture, James Baldwin, and Angela Davis.

While media reports have claimed Harris has shown greater sympathy to Palestinians than President Joe Biden, Harris advisors recently stated that any sympathy shouldn’t be confused with a break from US foreign policy towards Israel.

For two decades, a majority of the faith community voted Democrat in presidential elections.

In 2020, 69 percent of Muslims voted for Biden over Trump. However, polling from the Council on American Islamic Relations showed that this past summer, Stein, the Green Party’s presidential candidate, was tied with Harris among Muslim voters.

Yaqeen Institute’s polling conducted between 27 August to 8 September found that more than 50 percent of Muslims were voting for someone other than Harris or Trump. In that poll, Harris only received 14 percent of Muslim voters, while Trump got four percent.

Israel says detained 7 citizens accused of operating “spy network” for Iran

Those arrested were “gathering sensitive information on IDF bases and energy infrastructure”, the statement said, adding that they were all Jewish citizens from Haifa and other areas in the north of Israel.

Their operations spanned over a period of more than two years, the statement said, and included “extensive reconnaissance missions on IDF bases nationwide” that were financially compensated, often through cryptocurrency.

Israel Police and the ISA announced the arrest shows Iran’s ongoing efforts “to recruit and exploit Israeli citizens for espionage and terrorism within Israel”, adding that an indictment will be filed in the coming days.

It come as Israel prepares for an attack against Iran in response to Tehran’s missile barrage, which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed Tehran “will pay” for.

On October 1, Iran responded to the Israeli assassination of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh, Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, and Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) general Abbas Nilforoushan by launching a barrage of ballistic missiles toward Israeli military and intelligence bases all over the occupied territories.

While the Zionist regime has threatened to retaliate, Iranian officials have warned that Tehran’s reciprocal response to any Israeli action will be harsh, proportional and well-calculated.

Iranian Judiciary: Journalists not pardoned due to security cases

Niloufar Hamedi & Elaheh Mohammadi

The spokesperson for the Judiciary, Asghar Jahangir, told a press conference that the amnesty issued by the Leader in 2022, applied to the cases particularly involved in the nationwide unrest and deadly riots that was triggered after the death of Iranian woman Mahsa Amini in police custody.

Jahangir explained that the excluded journalists had prior charges of a security nature unrelated to their journalistic activities, which are still being processed.

Dismissing concerns, the spokesperson called on journalists to continue their critical oversight and inquiries, stressing that there is no particular sensitivity towards journalists and that the Judiciary has supported media professionals.

The comments came days after lawyers for Niloufar Hamedi and Elaheh Mohammadi announced that they have received notices to report to prison within days to begin serving their five-year sentences despite having been pardoned by the Leader.

Their sentence has caused outcry among various social groups, including outstanding journalists, university professors, and reformist figures, calling for the revocation of the verdicts.

Israel knows what Iran’s response will be in case of act of aggression: FM

Speaking in Kuwait on Tuesday, Araghchi said that the Zionist regime does not adhere to any international laws, so Iran does not rely on those regulations and is fully prepared to defend itself and its nuclear facilities.

The top Iranian diplomat stated that there is no crime that the Zionists have not already committed, and these crimes have continued with the support of the US and some European countries. Some of these crimes are war crimes and can be pursued in international forums.

He noted: “If our infrastructure is attacked, the Zionist enemy itself knows what actions we are capable of in response.”

The Iranian foreign minister underlined that Tehran has clearly informed the leaders of the Persian Gulf countries that the Zionist regime seeks to expand the war in the region, and this disaster must be prevented.

Araqchi underscored that Iran is working to ensure the war in the region ends as soon as possible.

He added that all of Iran’s neighbors have made it clear that they will not allow their territory or airspace to be used against the Islamic Republic of Iran. This is the expectation from all friendly and neighboring countries, and it is seen as a sign of their friendship and sincerity toward Iran.

Iran’s foreign minster holds meetings with Bahraini officials in Manama amid regional tensions

Abbas Araghci Bahraini King

Araghchi continued his diplomatic talks on regional issues with a visit to Bahrain.

He held talks with Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa on Monday evening in a meeting attended by the country’s foreign minister and the minister of the royal court.

The discussions focused on discussing the latest regional developments, particularly the Zionist regime’s ongoing atrocities and aggressions against the people of Gaza and Lebanon.

Araghchi highlighted his extensive talks with regional countries to mobilize Islamic nations’ capacities to stop the genocide and aggressions in Gaza and Lebanon.

He singled out the Zionist regime’s impunity, assured by the all-out U.S. support, as the primary factor emboldening Israel to commit heinous international crimes.

Araghchi stressed the need for all Islamic countries, especially those in the region, to collaborate and pressure the Zionist regime’s supporters to end the conflict.

Describing the humanitarian situation in Gaza and Lebanon as painful, Araghchi pointed to the Zionist regime’s deliberate actions to prevent the delivery of food and medical supplies as part of its genocide policy.

He emphasized the importance of cooperation among all Islamic countries to provide humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza and Lebanon.

During the meeting, King Hamad expressed appreciation for Iran’s diplomatic efforts to safeguard regional peace and stability and prevent escalating tensions and conflicts.

He reiterated Bahrain’s commitment to using all its capacities to prevent the spread of war and conflict in the region.

Araghchi also held a separate meeting with Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani. The two discussed regional security and ways to address existing threats.

Both foreign ministers underscored the necessity for greater collaboration and closer cooperation among regional countries to ensure stability and security in West Asia.

They emphasized the collective efforts needed to stop the killing of innocent people in Gaza and Lebanon and to open crossings and passageways for delivering humanitarian aid.

Iran’s president warns ‘every Israeli attack will face proportional response’

Speaking on Tuesday at a ceremony commemorating the assassinated Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar at the Palestinian resistance movement’s office in Tehran, President Pezeshkian criticized “the governments and powers that claim to uphold human rights and international laws while violating them and supporting a regime that displaces people.”

Addressing reporters, Pezeshkian said, “When these people seek their rights and land, European countries and the U.S. fully arm Israel and shamelessly defend every inhumane crime committed by the regime.”

“I wonder where those who speak of women and children’s rights and human rights are. It shows what they pursue in the world is force and bullying. Naturally, those who are free and seek justice will not remain silent in the face of their demands,” he pointed out.

Pezeshkian emphasized that the conflict cannot end by killing people but can only be resolved by establishing justice and considering all humans.

He stated that using force and injustice will not bring an end to the conflict.

In response to a question about a potential Israeli attack on Iran, Pezeshkian asserted earlier remarks by other military and political figures, stating “Any attack will be met with a proportional response.”

The comments come amid heightened tensions in the region, stemming from the ongoing Israeli aggression on Gaza and Lebanon and the potential for further escalation.

The international community remains concerned about the risks of a larger-scale conflict.

Biden ‘deeply concerned’ about release of documents on Israel’s possible attack plans: White House

President Joe Biden

Washington is not sure how the documents posted on the social media platform Telegram last week were made public, White House spokesperson John Kirby told reporters on Monday.

It is unclear whether the files were leaked or hacked.

“The president remains deeply concerned about any leakage of classified information into the public domain. That is not supposed to happen and it’s unacceptable when it does,” Kirby said.

The classified documents include an analysis of satellite imagery of Israeli military activities.

The files said the Israeli military “handled” air-launched ballistic missiles – which are fired from an aircraft – and conducted covert drone activities earlier this month “almost certainly” for a strike on Iran.

But the assessment, which appears to have been prepared by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, added that the analysis cannot “definitively predict the scale and scope”.

Several US media outlets cited anonymous US officials saying the secret documents seem authentic.

The files first appeared on the Telegram channel Middle East Spectator, which publishes news and commentary about the region. The account shares messages that support Iran and its allies, but has refuted claims of ties to the government in Tehran.

US House Speaker Mike Johnson confirmed on Sunday that an investigation into how the documents became public is “underway, ” saying he will receive a briefing on the matter.

Lebanon: Israel conducted strike on Rafik Hariri Hospital

“The ongoing Israeli aggression against Lebanon records a series of daily attacks that affect the Lebanese health sector. The latest of these occurred this evening with the targeting of two major hospitals in the capital and Mount Lebanon,” the ministry said in a statement.

“After the Israeli enemy threatened the Sahel Hospital in the southern suburbs of Beirut, which was still partially operational despite extremely difficult security conditions, a hostile raid hit one of the entrances of Rafik Hariri University Hospital,” the statement noted, adding that the hospital continues to operate normally.

The Israeli strike near the Hariri Hospital killed 13 people, including a child, and injured 57, the ministry said, adding it had caused “significant damage to the hospital”.

Seventeen of the wounded were hospitalized, with seven in critical condition, it noted.

The head of Sahel hospital in Beirut’s southern suburbs has also denied an Israeli claim that Hezbollah buried at least half a billion dollars in gold and cash under the building, as he called on Lebanon’s army to visit the site and debunk the claim.

Israel earlier claimed that Hezbollah had buried funds underneath the hospital.

Hospital director Fadi Alameh told Reuters on Monday that the hospital is evacuating patients, following the claim.

While cross-border warfare between Israel and Hezbollah continued since the Gaza war last October, Tel Aviv escalated its offensive in Lebanon late last month, killing Hezbollah leader Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah and many other commanders.

The extensive air attacks, followed by a ground invasion, have killed more than 2,500, injured over 11,500 and displaced around 1.3 million people.

US shouldering responsibility for enabling potential Israeli attack against Iran: Envoy

Amir Saeed Iravani

Iravani made the remarks in a letter addressed to the UN Security Council on Monday after US President Joe Biden said during a press conference in Berlin that he was aware of “how and when Israel intends to launch an attack against the Islamic Republic.”

The envoy called the remarks “profoundly alarming and provocative”, saying they indicated the US’s “tacit approval and explicit support for Israel’s unlawful military aggression against Iran”.

Iravani added the support, which has seen Washington arming Tel Aviv with technical expertise and advanced weaponry, “would make the US government ‘complicit’ in any Israeli aggression against Iran and its consequences.”

The Israeli regime, which enjoys all-out political and military support on the part of the United States, its biggest ally, has been threatening to attack the Iranian territory in response to the country’s retaliatory strike against the occupied Palestinian territories in early October.

The retaliation saw Iran targeting the Zionist entity’s military and intelligence bases in reprisal for the regime’s deadly acts of aggression against the regional countries, including the Islamic Republic.

Tehran has defended the retaliation as a legitimate act of self-defense that took place after a long period of self-restraint.

Washington, Iravani reminded, was already complicit in the Israeli regime’s October 2023-present genocidal war on the Gaza Strip and deadly escalation against Lebanon due to its providing Tel Aviv with ample military support.

The support that emboldens the Israeli regime to commit further acts of regional aggression contradicts the US’s consistent claims of backing de-escalation in the region, the envoy noted.

Iravani called on the Security Council to unequivocally condemn such reckless behavior on the part of the American administration and demand it to rather fulfill its obligations under international law and the UN Charter.

Syria says two civilians killed in missile attack in Damascus

“The Israeli enemy launched an air attack targeting a civilian car in the Mazzeh residential neighbourhood in Damascus, which led to the death of two civilians, the injury of three others and material damage to private property in the surrounding area,” the source said.

Some Israeli news reports suggested that Islamic Jihad’s Secretary-General, Ziad al-Nakhala, was the target of the missile attack.

The Palestinian resistance movement, however, issued a statement rejecting reports that Nakhala’s vehicle was hit as “completely false”.

But the Israeli army has claimed that a strike in Syria’s capital killed the commander of a Hezbollah unit who was responsible for the transfer of weapons from Iran.

Hezbollah has not commented yet on the raid.

The Zionist regime has repeatedly struck Syria with air raids and artillery attacks since last October, when the ongoing genocidal war in the Gaza Strip began.
