Europe lacks independent will in face of US: Leader

“This criticism applies to Europe that contrary to the past, it has no independent will vis-à-vis the US,” the Leader said in a meeting with visiting Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras in Tehran on Monday.

He added that the European countries should address this “weak point.”

Pointing to the foreign-backed crisis in Syria, the Leader said, “Terrorism is a contagious and very dangerous malady which can be contained if it is seriously countered by all. However, some are directly or indirectly assisting the terrorist groups.”

On Iran and Greece’s resplendent cultural and civilization history, the Leader said the Greek premier’s visit to Tehran “can be good beginning to increase the two countries long-term exchanges and cooperation.”

Ayatollah Khamenei said Tehran and Athens have common and convergent stances and highlighted the “independent approach” of the Greek administration.

“I hope that you can overcome the economic problems and this trip would also serve as grounds for the promotion of the interests of both countries,” the Leader said.

Tsipras said his trip to Iran is a turning point in the bilateral ties and signals the common political resolve for stepping up cooperation at all levels.

He added that Ayatollah Khamenei is the leader of a proud and great nation who has played a decisive role in defending the causes and independence of the Iranians.

The Greek premier said the current inter-dependent nature of European countries’ economies makes any change in the status quo very difficult, adding that a shift in the power makeup is required in the European Union to rectify the situation.

Referring to the Syrian issue, he expressed hope for positive developments in the Arab country since acts of terrorism have displaced countless Syrians and triggered an influx of refugees into European states, including Greece.

41 types of world wetlands recognized in Iran

Speaking in an exclusive interview on the sidelines of a trip to West Azerbaijan, Chalmers said that regarding wetlands Iran has a special position in the world.
She said that based on Ramsar Convention 3.2 resolutions, seven Iranian wetland sites have been listed in the Montreux Record.

Chalmers went to Azerbaijan to participate in a planning and informative workshop on the Lake Orumiyeh basin.

The Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, called the Ramsar Convention, is an intergovernmental treaty that provides the framework for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources.

The Convention was adopted in the Iranian city of Ramsar in 1971 and came into force in 1975. Since then, almost 90% of UN member states, from all the world’s geographic regions, have acceded to become “Contracting Parties”.

Enemies failed in plots against Iran: Leader

“Since the first day of the [1979] Revolution until today, the number one materialistic powers in the world have stood against the Islamic establishment but have failed to make any headway in this regard,” the Leader said in a meeting with the commanders and staff of the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force on Monday.

Ayatollah Khamenei further urged Iranian officials to remain vigilant at all times against the plots targeting the country. “Be careful about what lies behind enemy smiles,” the Leader said.

Ayatollah Khamenei ridiculed the US proclamations of advocating human rights and democracy, saying Washington has thrown its weight behind the Israeli regime, which murders children, and its allies in the region, which are strangers to the concept of elections.

“The Americans refuse to respond to the simplest questions in the world public opinion about their support for the elements behind the savage crimes in Yemen and flagrantly continue to back those who are carrying out the most merciless form of state terrorism in massacring the innocent people of Yemen,” the Leader said.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Leader pointed to the upcoming parliamentary and the Assembly of Experts elections and said participating in the February 26 votes is a “duty” for all the Iranians.

Mass popular turnout in the elections will thwart enemy plots and “guarantee the dignity and might of Iran and the establishment” by injecting “fresh blood” into the country.

The Leader praised Iranians’ participation in annual rallies marking the victory of the Islamic Revolution, urging a massive presence in the upcoming demonstration. Ayatollah Khamenei said that impressive participation in this year’s rallies will also frustrate ill-wishers.

Ayatollah Khamenei said the main objective of the Islamic establishment is the formation of an Islamic society which enjoys science, justice, morality, dignity and progress. “The chief goal of the enemy is consigning to oblivion these lofty objectives and ultimately changing the conduct [of the Islamic Republic] and creating internal change in the Islamic Republic establishment.”

Ayatollah Khamenei said all of the enemy efforts are directed at preventing the movement of the Islamic Republic toward dignified and mighty goals and reinstating the domination of foreigners over the country.

“Today the main agenda to counter the Islamic establishment is [to wage] a soft war to deplete the Iranian people and establishment of the components of power,” the Leader said.

Ayatollah Khamenei also called for boosting the country’s economy and said, “If we strengthen the country’s economy from inside, the majority of problems, including unemployment, stagnation and inflation, will be eliminated.”

The Leader said there is a “hostile front” against Iran in economy, culture and social issues, stressing that “whenever enemy cannot continue its hostility, it deals its blows [to our country] in the guise of a friend.”

Pope’s Representative Received in Qom’s Islamic Seminary

Representing the Vatican City, Cardinal Peter Turkson visited the holy Iranian city of Qom at the invitation of Qom Seminary, where he held meetings with senior officials of the Islamic educational body, and attended a conference entitled “The Role of Religions in the Realization of Justice and Peace from the Viewpoints of Islam and Christianity”.

In an address to the conference, Ayatollah Morteza Moghtadaei, the secretary of the Supreme Council of Islamic Seminaries (SCIS), praised Cardinal Turkson for accepting the Seminary’s invitation, and described the visit as “a positive step” for the establishment of closer ties between Qom Seminary and the Vatican.

He announced that Cardinal Turkson had had a good meeting with the Seminary president on Friday night. During the meeting, it was decided that a group should be formed to examine the ways in which Islam and Christianity can co-operate on a global level.

“We wish to stay abreast of the Vatican’s plans for establishment of peace throughout the world,” Ayatollah Moghtadaei noted, adding that Qom Seminary is also keen to make the Vatican familiar with Islam’s plans through the Catholic Church’s close ties with Muslim clerics.

Ayatollah Moghtadaei further highlighted the ongoing wars and massacres across the world, saying that terrorist groups are currently killing and exploiting people, with many women and children being killed in Yemen and Bahrain.

He called on the Pope to use his influence with European heads-of-state, and to order them to stop arming militants such as Daesh [ISIS], who kill numerous Muslims, including women and children, every day.

He urged Cardinal Turkson, who is the President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, to deliver this message to Pope Francis: “Jesus Christ orders (his followers) to eradicate the roots of tyranny; so does the Prophet of Islam.”

“You are the president of a council whose responsibility is to spread peace and justice, and we want you to deliver our message to the Pope,” he added.

“Please deliver this message to him that we, Muslim clerics, want you to use the influence God has given you, and to order them to cut off their support of Daesh, so that oppressed Muslims can be freed, and the roots of Daesh can be eradicated,” the Iranian cleric noted.

The Iranian “Voices of The Earth” Are Heard in Japan

As reported by Mehr News Agency, Voices of the Earth was the subject of this competition, in which a third Iranian participant also received an honorary award.

Mahsa Kazemeini, an eleven-year-old girl from Shiraz, won award for best drawing, portraying a gentle breeze in a wheat farm where a local female farmer stands, wearing a colorful traditional dress, embracing a golden bushel of wheat.

The second prize was received by Milad Sadeghi, a 15-year-old boy from Ardebil, for bringing a terrible scene of tree-cutting to the attention of the world. His drawing depicts the sorrowful face of a man sitting on a tree branch, bearing witness to the horror of this violent act.

Painting Earth2

Last year, a young Iranian girl from Kerman was among the top winners of this competition. This year, apart from the two winners mentioned above, the judges also awarded the 11-year-old Negin Sadeqian from Isfahan with an honorary diploma. She drew a farm beside a village at the foot of a mountain, where girls are playing happily wearing traditional dress, and birds are flying overhead. Unconsciously, the image of the village mosque reminds Muslims of the peaceful sound of Azan.

25 Iranian drawings from IIDCYA (Iranian Institute for the Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults) were entered into this well-known competition in 2015. They competed with 18,299 drawings from 85 countries around the world. Apart from the awards for the winners, selected drawings will be given to all participants in the form of a postcard.

Iran’s FM Highlights Role of European Nations to Settle Syria Crisis

In an op-ed published in Italian daily La República as well as Spain’s El País, Zarif wrote that a proper momentum toward a just political solution in Syria has been generated and that European countries can play an effective role in strengthening this process.

Following is the full text of the Iranian foreign minister’s piece:

A New Chapter in Diplomacy

President Rouhani’s recent visit to Italy and France marked the historic beginning of a new season of economic, political, and cultural cooperation beneficial to both sides, after roughly a decade of being interrupted.

Italy and France, as two pillars and founders of the European Union as well as traditional bridges between the West and the Middle East, have often had constructive relationship with Iran, although at times this relationship has experienced ups and downs and even passing crises, still the desire of both sides to overcome the problems and fix the difficulties reflects their deep connections.  Even though the unnecessary so-called nuclear “crisis” and the intrusion of certain third parties created some interruptions in the traditional relations between Iran and Europe, both the warm welcome for President Rouhani, the various and serious high ranking meetings that transpired during this trip, as well as the important agreements that were reached, represent the restoration of economic relations and cooperation in all energy, technology, political, cultural, and even security fields.

Also, President Rouhani’s meeting with Pope Francis, marked a mutual commitment to join efforts to create a World Against Violence and Extremism (WAVE). To recall, in September 2013, newly-elected President Rouhani made this initiative at the UN General Assembly as a key foreign policy agenda of Iran; the General Assembly adopted this initiative by consensus and thus sparked the hope for creating a prudent global campaign to fight the menace of terrorism and extremism.

On a broader level, from ancient times Europe and Iran have been each other’s civilizational neighbors.  With the start of the implementation of the nuclear agreement, which has put an end to unnecessary decade-old tensions, it is now time to focus on more important matters, above all a common search on how to achieve the mechanisms for Iran and other influential countries to expand their cooperation based on shared interests and the need to confront the common threats.

Indeed, Europe and Iran have common interests in several areas.  In light of their historical and traditional bilateral relations as well as other positive sources, such as the existence of complementary economies, mutually-beneficial cooperation in the fields of energy and technology, cultures of Indo-European languages, and other long-standing cultural connections, their sustained cooperation with each other is guaranteed.  In addition, through both collective and bilateral mechanisms, it is possible to actively pursue the struggle against the important threats such as terrorism, violence, extremism, drug trafficking, and the like.

The missing link alongside economic and technological cooperation, which should generate sufficient attention, is the necessity for the two sides to increase cooperation in the fight against violence and extremism and to quickly restore peace and stability in the Middle East; the lack of sufficient attention to this is a threat to both Iran and Europe.

Iran, as a country located in the heart of the Middle East and Europe as an immediate neighbor of the region, share legitimate concerns about the continuation of hostilities and bloodshed in the region, especially the crisis of displaced persons in three countries — Syria, Iraq, and Yemen.

Iran for quite some time has proposed and updated two four-point proposals to solve the current crises in Syria and Yemen, a large part of which have been incorporated in Security Council resolution 2254. The common points of these plans include an immediate cease-fire, humanitarian assistance to the non-combatants, facilitating dialogue among the groups from inside of the country and guiding them to form inclusive government of national unity – that would have the potential to restore peace and stability to the region.

After the Vienna 1 and 2 and the New York talks on Syria, and the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2254, a proper momentum toward a just political solution in Syria has been generated and the European countries can play an effective role in this connection to strengthen and sustain this process.

Also, confronting the roots and manifestations of structural violence and the effects of extremism, including the fight against poverty and economic inequality, promoting the mechanisms for democracy, avoiding the violent and sectarian conflicts, and opposing unilateral military actions, these are important foreign priorities that can help restore the stability of the Middle East and the European Union can definitely play a positive role in this framework.

Security can never be achieved in expense of insecurity for the others.  No nation can truly pursue its interests without taking into consideration the interests of others.  No one can combat Al-Qaeda and its ideological siblings, such as the so-called Islamic State, which is neither a state nor Islamic, in Iraq while effectively assisting their expansion in Yemen or Syria. In this regard, European countries by encouraging other countries in the Middle East to accept a political solution for this crisis play a positive role in the region.

A final word: the world community that includes Iran and Europe cannot afford to avoid addressing the root causes of instability in the Middle East any longer. At the same time, this presents a unique opportunity for interaction and cooperation that should not be missed. Peace and stability is the fundamental need of civilization in the Middle East, Europe, and indeed the world.  In today’s interconnected world marked with growing mutual interdependence, this is not a choice, rather it is an inescapable necessity.
