Iranian Official Pleased with Positive Outcomes of Poland Visit

Mohsen Jalalpour

Speaking to IRNA, Mohsen Jalalpour, Chairman of the Iran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture, said that Zarif was also satisfied with the visit.

Jalalpour also expressed his hope that the visit could bring about fruitful economic results for the two countries.

He added that Iran’s Foreign Ministry has also voiced its readiness to make arrangements for similar visits to other countries in the near future.

Touching upon the achievements of the Iranian delegation’s visit to Poland, he added that the two sides had penned several cooperation agreements and MoUs in the fields of oil, gas, energy, and foodstuffs, as well as medical equipment.

Thanks to the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Iran and the global community are narrowing the gap in fostering mutual cooperation, Jalalpour noted.

Iran’s politico-economic delegation embarked on its European tour by visiting Poland on Sunday May 29. The tour then stops at Finland, Sweden and Lithuania.

FM Spokesman: Bahraini Cleric’s Jail Term Extension ‘Complicates’ Problems

“Such measures against moderate political leaders cannot resolve Bahrain’s problems,” Jaberi Ansari said in a statement released late on Tuesday May 31.

He added that the move will further “complicate” the problems and would, in the end, serve the interests of extremists in the Arab country.

On Monday, Bahrain’s Supreme Court of Appeal increased a four-year prison sentence already issued against Sheikh Salman by five more years.

Bahrainis held hundreds-strong protests throughout Manama on Tuesday, venting rage at the ruling of the Supreme Court.

Sheikh Salman was arrested in late December 2014 over alleged anti-regime incitements. Manama accused him of seeking regime change and collaborating with foreign powers.

Rouhani’s Brother Appears in Public to End Rumours of His Arrest

Fereydoon-Rouhani

According to a report by Etemad newspaper, as translated by IFP, no one had seen Fereydoun for several days, including during an ongoing visit by President Rouhani to the northwestern city of Urmia. This came despite Rouhani’s brother frequently accompanying him everywhere he went.

Fereydoun, however, appeared in public during a ceremony attended by Rouhani in Urmia, thus ending the rumours.

His appearance, after days of absence, silenced opponents of the administration who claimed that Fereydoun had been arrested; a rumour which had earlier been dismissed by the country’s prosecutor-general.

As indicated in the photo, he was sitting between Rouhani’s Cultural Adviser Hessamoddin Ashena and Vice-President for Women and Family Affairs Shahindokht Mowlaverdi.

Europe after 20 Tons of Iran Heavy Water: AEOI Chief

Ali-Akbar-Salehi3

“We can produce 20 tons of heavy water per year,” Salehi said on Tuesday May 31.

“There are customers for this strategic commodity. One should not forget that there are few countries which can produce heavy water.”

Last month, the US government completed an $8.6m deal to buy 32 metric tons of heavy water from Iran. Earlier this month, US lawmakers voted for a bill that would prohibit such purchases next year. The measure is yet to be approved by the US Senate.

Salehi said Tehran has conditioned the sale on Washington’s full payment of the purchase in advance.

Iran is angry after the US Supreme Court ruled in April to hand over $2 billion of its assets frozen in a US bank to families of those killed in a 1983 bombing in Beirut and other attacks.

“They should deposit the money first,” Salehi said, noting, “We are also in talks with Russians to sell them 40 tons.”

Changes at Fordow

Salehi further announced that the country’s Fordow nuclear facility is to host a number of new activities, most of which have already been undertaken in cooperation with Moscow. These activities include the production of “stable isotopes,”.

“We intend to turn part of Fordow into a very advanced technical and scientific laboratory,” Salehi said.

Tehran has consulted the European Union regarding the type of the facility, which is planned to be capable of offering its services to regional and international markets as well, he added.

Arak Reactor Modernization

Salehi also said the country had formed a task force together with the US and China to modernize the Arak heavy water reactor.

“This [project] is also making good progress…We hope to witness the inauguration of the modern reactor over the next five years.”

Uranium Hunt, New Reactors

The official also hailed the fact that 73% of the country’s land had been explored for new uranium resources, saying that the searches had “returned very promising news.”

Salehi concluded that Tehran and Moscow had signed agreements aimed at the construction of two new nuclear reactors.

Russia has already built a power plant in the city of Bushehr in southern Iran. The agreement for Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant was finalized in 1995, but the project was delayed several times due to a number of technical and financial issues.

Paintings Inspired by Persian Carpets on Show in Tehran

Paintings Inspired by Persian Carpets

Entitled Where Is My Ney? the collection by the young artist Homa Arkani opened on Friday May 27.

“In all the paintings, a carpet is a symbol of the living world and the motifs repeated on each carpet resemble the roles we are playing in this world,” Arkani told Honaronline on the opening day.

“The existing world in a carpet somehow resembles the repetition and the rhythm of birth, death and then rebirth again,” she added.

She also explained that she has made use of Rumi’s Masnavi  in her works as a source of inspiration, saying, “I have had a different look at the Masnavi, focusing on its social and cultural aspects, for they can be quite useful in today’s world.”

“The great potential of Rumi’s poetry is that it has been composed for all eras. It is even useful for us now, and I tried to focus on the cultural aspect of his works rather than the mystical side.”

The opening ceremony continued with a performance by musician Nader Mashayekhi.

“We aimed to give dimensions to the motifs of the paintings and turn them into three-dimensional artworks. The sounds heard during the performance refer to the ears observed here and there in the paintings, inviting us to be all ears and listen to the sounds of the world,” she explained.

There will also be another performance on Friday in the gallery.

The exhibition runs until June 7 at the gallery in the Niavaran district.

France Again Eases Past Iran in Rio Volleyball Qualifiers

Iran-France-Volleyball

France took advantage of the absence of Iran’s talsimanic Amir Ghafour, and was able to set up a wall blocking the other Iranian hitters, Tasnim reported.

Iran looked completely different without their main opposite spiker Ghafour, as Shahram Mahmoudi and Milad Ebadipour were forced to run the offence with minimal support from their teammates.

Mahmoudi topped all scorers with 19 points. Ebadipour chipped in 14 points on a losing effort for Iran.

France’s Antonin Rouzier looked sharp on offence, scoring 18 points, while Kevin Tillie had a good stint from the flanks, contributing 13 points.

French Head Coach Laurent Tillie’s men have already defeated China 3-1 and lost to Poland 3-2 in the competition.

Iran will face Japan on Wednesday.

Eight strong teams are competing at the Men’s Olympic Qualification Tournament from May 28 to June 5 at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.

The qualification tournament in Tokyo, which also serves as the Asian qualification tournament, will provide the top ranked Asian team and the top three ranked teams with the four Rio 2016 Olympic Games qualification slots available.

IFP: As reported by KhabarOnline,12 years ago, the French national team defeated Iran in the Olympic qualifiers and prevented Iran from booking a ticket to Athens.

Now, even though Iran has become one of the world’s major volleyball powers, France once again managed to triumph. Iran has never achieved a victory over the French.

7 Conservatives, 5 Reformists in Final Formation of Parliament’s Governing Board

Iran's Parliament

The moderate conservative MP and the long-serving speaker of Iran’s Parliament, Ali Larijani, was once again elected as the Speaker. In a poll at the open session of the parliament, Larijani secured 237 out of 276 votes.

The Vice Speakers and members of the governing board were also elected in the session. Two reformists and moderates, Masoud Pezeshkian and Ali Motahari, were respectively elected as the First and Second Vice-Speakers.

Both vice-speakers are members of the Faction of Hope, the camp of reformists and pro-government MPs in the new Parliament.

In a preliminary vote on Sunday, Larijani beat the leading reformist Mohammad Reza Aref, causing him to drop out of the race for the conclusive elections held on Tuesday.

Motahari was also defeated, ranking third in the preliminary polls for the post of Vice-Speaker, and was not elected on Sunday. However, he decided to run again in the Tuesday votes, and managed to secure enough votes to become the 2nd Vice-Speaker, beating his conservative rivals.

Mohammad Qassim Osmani, Behrouz Nemati, and Mohammad Ashoori Taziani were the three MPs who were elected both on Sunday and Tuesday as the observers of the board. Osmani is a reformist, and the two others are conservatives.

Reformists managed to increase their votes in the other six seats in Tuesday elections. Two conservatives, Nasser Mousavi Largani and Abdolkarim Hosseinzadeh, had been elected in the Sunday votes as two of the six secretaries of the board; however, the reformist MPs Mohammad Ali Vakili and Ali-Asghar Yousefnejad defeated them in the Tuesday votes, adding to the weight of the reformists.

The other four seats for the secretaries were claimed by the conservative MPs Gholam-Reza Kateb, Amir Hossein Qazizadeh Hashemi, Akbar Ranjbarzadeh, and Ahmad Amirabadi Farahani.

Overall, conservatives seem to outnumber the reformists by 7 to 5 if Larijani and Nemati are counted in the list of conservative MPs. However, they were both listed by the reformists in the List of Hope during the February elections, and have subsequently joined the Velayat Faction [the conservative faction in Parliament].

German Carmakers Resume Cooperation with Iran: Minister

Nematzadeh

Speaking to reporters after his meeting with German Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel on Monday May 30, Nematzadeh highlighted the presence of German carmakers in Iran, saying that the two countries have had long-term cooperation in production of heavy vehicles, like buses and trucks.

Cooperation between Iranian and German firms has now resumed, he said, adding, “Currently, we are deepening this cooperation in the form of joint investments.”

The Iranian minister went on to say that negotiations are progressing well and that the two sides are expected to sign contracts on joint ventures in the near future.

Iran’s automotive industry is the second largest industry of the country, after its oil and gas, accounting for 10% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The industry is expected to grow significantly following a nuclear deal [JCPOA] that Iran and six world powers reached on July 14, 2015 and started implementing on January 16.
