Iran, Bosnia agree to expand banking cooperation

The Head of Bosnia’s Central Bank voiced his pleasure in the removal of the sanctions imposed against Iran, saying, “The Islamic Republic of Iran, because of its important status in the Middle East, has a special place for us.”

In a relevant development in February, Bosnian Foreign Minister Igor Crnadak said that his country is determined to revive its former economic ties with post-sanctions Iran.

Speaking at a joint press conference in Tehran with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif, Crnadak said the two sides have always had great ties and that today, more than ever, they are determined to expand on that.

“We discussed many ways for economic cooperation. We believe good economic relations could also lead to greater diplomatic ties. We are delighted to have our Iranian partners involved in our infrastructure development projects. This will happen soon,” he added.

The Bosnian Foreign Minister said the two sides could also cooperate in travel and tourism, adding that his country will fully support private travel agencies to this end.

“We also discussed common challenges, joint educational and cultural programs, as well as introduction of easier visa programs in order to normalize bilateral relations,” he noted.

Zarif, for his part, referred to the relations between Tehran and Sarajevo, and added that the two sides are willing to expand bilateral ties in various fields including political, economics and banking.

Iran Blasts Israel for Defying Chemical Weapons Disarmament

“Israel has no excuse to refrain from joining the Chemical Weapons Convention,” Araqchi said, addressing the 14th meeting of the CWC Asian member-states in Tehran on Monday.

The Iranian deputy foreign minister underlined that Israel is a serious threat to the region and international peace and security, especially because it shrugs off joining disarmament mechanisms and non-proliferation treaties.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran as a responsible and committed member of this international convention has resolutely decided to join the international disarmament treaties, especially those related to the weapons of mass destruction,” Araqchi added.

The 14th meeting of the National Authorities of Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) in Asia kicked off in Tehran on Monday.

Representatives from 25 Asian countries are attending the 3-day meeting.

Following the arrangements made between Iran’s Secretariat of National Authority of the Chemical Weapons Convention and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, the 14th meeting of National Authorities of State Parties in Asia is being held in Tehran from 23 to 25 May 2016.

This regional meeting of National Authorities hosted by Iran aims to consolidate the country’s active role in the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and its successful run is expected to promote Iran’s position among other state parties to the Convention.

54 representatives from 25 Asian countries are participating in the meeting where important issues in the national implementation of the CWC will be discussed.

7th World Islamic Forum Kicks Off in Yazd

Nearly 100 guests from 35 countries are attending the two-day international event. The theme of the Forum is “Strategic Communications: Reference Values, Institutions and Individuals.”  The Forum is being supported by Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC).

The reason why this Iranian city has been chosen for holding the Forum is that Yazd is the first Muslim Adobe City and also second Historical World City, according to UNESCO.

Bringing global Islamic thinktanks closer together and discussing the issue of a world free from violence and extremism are among the important goals of the Forum.

Through a proposal to the United Nations General Assembly last year, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani called for an updated version of the 2013 WAVE resolution, which seeks a world free from violence and extremism. The proposal was warmly welcomed by the UN.

Assembly of Experts Vice-Chairmen Elected

Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati, winning 51 votes out of 86, was elected as chairman of the fifth AE.

In voting for the chairmanship of the Assembly, Ayatollah Ebrahim Amini and Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi got 21 and 13 votes respectively.

The inauguration ceremony of the fifth Assembly of Experts started this morning with a message from the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

In his message, the Ayatollah said that the AE is responsible for exact and all-out preservation of Islamic and revolutionary identity of the system.

The Leader also said that the AE is important due to the heavy responsibility it bears in directing the main bodies of the system towards its brilliant and excellent goals.

The 88-member Assembly of Experts is an important body in Iran responsible for supervising and electing the country’s Supreme Leader.

The members of the Assembly are elected for an 8-year tenure.

Ayatollah Jannati Selected as Assembly of Experts Chief

The senior cleric was elected as the new head of the body on Tuesday, winning 51 out of 86 votes.

Ayatollah Ebrahim Amini took 21 of the votes, followed by Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi who won 13 votes, while one of the ballots was void.

Ayatollah Jannati will head the Assembly of Experts for two years.

The high-ranking body elects and oversees the activities of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution.

The 88 members of the assembly are directly elected to office by people for an eight-year term. It holds biannual meetings to appoint a new chairman.

The latest Assembly of Experts polls were held across Iran on February 26.

NITC to Restart Oil Transfer to Europe Soon

Speaking to reporters, he noted that even during the sanctions, Iranian tankers preserved their international standards and remained up-to-date.

After the removal of Iran’s sanctions, NITC sent its first oil cargo to African destinations, along with Asian customers, and it is expected that the first Iranian oil cargo to Europe will be underway in the near future, the official added.

He underlined that NITC can re-take its share of the global transportation of oil and oil products.

Referring to pirate attacks against Iranian oil tankers, Rajaei said that the attacks have decreased and the pirates had not succeeded in seizing any Iranian vessels.

Official Predicts 83% Urbanization for Iran by 2045

Dr. Kwak Young Hoon addressed the conference on Monday May 23, where he told the meeting that the urban population in Asia was 2.1bn, which accounted for 48% of the continent’s population. “It will reach 3.2bn people, that is, 62% of Asia population. 58.3m Iranians lived in cities in 2015, which accounted for 73% of Iran’s population; this will reach 82% by 2045, that is, 83% of a total population of 98.9m by then,” he said.

“Economic development should consider environment, education, energy, engineering, and ethics; times have changed and history has ushered in a new era of technology and hi-tech living commodities,” Hoon told the conference. “Sustainable development and green space should be considered in new urbanization trends.”

The first International Conference on Urban Economy, with the major theme being Resistance Economy; Implementation and Action, commenced in Tehran on May 19.

Iran, Poland ink MoU on fighting organized crime

Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli, Iranian Interior Minister, met with his Polish counterpart Mariusz Błaszczak in Warsaw on Monday, where he highlighted the need for further cooperation and cementing the friendly ties between the two countries, and expressed his concern over the growth of organized crime and the resulting threats.

The two sides signed a 9-article agreement for dealing effectively with such threats. Under the agreement, Iran and Poland will step up cooperation on fighting terrorist crimes; procurement, production, storage, distribution, transportation, and trafficking of narcotics, psychotropic drugs and basic chemicals; human trafficking; forgery of passports, visas and other official documents; counterfeit currency and security documents; money laundering; cybercrimes; firearms, ammunition and explosives trafficking; cultural and historical properties trafficking; and crimes against protected natural environments.

Rahmani Fazli also held talks with Polish Digitisation Minister Anna Strezynska on Monday during which the two sides stressed collaboration against cybercrimes which are rapidly expanding.

During the meeting, the two sides reached an agreement on forming a committee comprising representatives from Iran’s ICT Ministry and cyber police and representatives from Poland’s Ministry of Digital Affairs and special law enforcement units. The committee will be tasked to execute the articles stipulated in the agreement on the fight against organized crime.
