Iran and Turkey Jointly to Submit Rumi’s Masnavi to UNESCO

The two countries have reached an agreement jointly to submit the Masnavi-ye Manavi, the masterpiece by Persian poet Mawlana Jalal ad-Din Rumi, to UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register, Salehi-Amiri announced.

Other subjects, including exchanges of experts and holding rare manuscripts exhibitions, were also discussed at the meeting.

IFP: Mawlana Jalal ad-Din Rumi, known in Turkey as Mevlana and in the West as Rumi, was a 13th Century Persian poet, scholar, theologian and mystic. He was born in what is now Tajikistan or Afghanistan, and travelled widely across the Middle East, eventually settling Konya, which is in modern-day Turkey. For this reason, he is widely renowned and revered across the region, and although he wrote in Persian, many nations still feel kinship with his poetry and his spiritual teachings.

Portugal Calls for Tehran-Lisbon Direct Flights

“The people of Portugal are very much interested in visiting Iran’s historical sites, but the lack of direct flights between the two countries prevents them from visiting Iran,” Costa Oliveira said in a meeting with Iran’s Isfahan Governor General Rasoul Zargarpour on Tuesday May 31.

He pointed to his country’s willingness to take part in joint ventures, saying, “Portuguese companies are deeply interested in investing in Iran, especially in Isfahan province.

Oliveira referred to Portugal’s good track record in the tourism sector, and said, “15% of Portugal’s revenues rely on tourism.”

In mid-May, Tehran and Lisbon agreed to boost their mutual cooperation in the aviation industry and transportation by establishing direct flights between the two capitals. The issue was raised in a meeting between Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hassan Qashqavi and Portuguese State Minister for International Affairs in Lisbon.

Qashqavi said that in their meeting, the two sides exchanged views on implementation of agreements and starting direct flights between Tehran and Lisbon. The Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister said that Iran and Portugal will begin exchanging visits by high-ranking officials soon.

In January 2015, Iran and Portugal agreed to boost their mutual cooperation air transportation.

“The heads of the civil aviation organizations of Iran and Portugal have conferred on mutual cooperation in air transportation and establishing direct flights between Tehran and Lisbon,” Deputy Head of the Civil Aviation Organization of Iran Mohammad Khodakarami said.

“A 25-article air transportation agreement has been signed between Iran and Portugal,” Head of the Civil Aviation Organization of Iran Alireza Jahangirian said at the time.

The MoU, which was an effort to remove the obstacles standing in the way of air transportation between the two countries, was endorsed by the two countries’ aviation chiefs.

“Iran Air, the national flag carrier, and Portugal’s Euro Atlantic have been mentioned as designated airlines in the MoU,” Jahangirian added.

Iran-Sweden Trade Meeting Opens in Stockholm

Iran-Sweden Trade Meeting-Stockholm

Visiting Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad-Javad Zarif and Swedish Minsiter for EU Affairs and Trade Ann Linde are scheduled to deliver speeches at the gathering.

The conference will address ways for fostering mutual cooperation, evaluate the two countries’ markets, as well as examine Iran’s situation during the post-sanctions era.

Zarif, who is leading a 60-member trade-economic delegation to Europe, arrived in Stockholm on Tuesday night on an official visit to discuss bilateral ties with senior Swedish officials.

Zarif started his tour of Europe on Sunday evening and arrived in Warsaw for the first leg of his tour.

While in Warsaw, he met senior Polish officials and attended an economic and trade meeting and also a meeting at Warsaw University which was attended by professors, students and a considerable number of foreign ambassadors.

After ending his visit to Poland, Zarif and his accompanying delegation arrived in Finland.

In Finland, the Iranian top diplomat participated in a political meeting held in Helsinki for the first time by the Finnish government, for the purpose of exchanging regional dialogue. Zarif met his Finnish counterpart Timo Soini, attended a joint press conference with him, then met the Finnish Parliament Speaker and President.

Sweden is the third leg of Zarif’s tour of Europe. His last stop in Europe will be Latvia.

Market Unaffected by Iran Export Hike ahead of OPEC Meeting

Bijan Namdar Zangeneh -1

“Iran, having doubled its crude exports, has not affected the market negatively and the boost has been well absorbed by the market,” the top Iranian energy official said.

Speaking ahead of the 169th ordinary meeting of the members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) in Vienna, Austria, due to start on June 2, Zangeneh told Shana that OPEC is an organization that is meant to maximize its members’ interests by ensuring stability in the market.

“It [OPEC] must be able to manage the market imbalance and this is a role of the organization which Iran supports,” he said.

“The more OPEC fulfils this role, the more Iran will support the organization’s goals and principal structure,” he said.

During the upcoming meeting, Iran will try to ensure that OPEC will embrace its role, he said.

“What is different about this edition of the meeting is Iran’s crude oil export hike,” he added. Iran has doubled its exports within 6 months from the 168th meeting, which has not had any negative impact on the market. Its supplies have been well absorbed by the market, he added.

“It is fortunate that the crude oil market, despite all the disruptions which have taken place recently, is recovering its balance,” Zangeneh said.

Candidates for OPEC Secretary General

The Iranian Minister of Petroleum said 7 candidates from Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Nigeria, Ecuador and Venezuela have signed up for the OPEC secretary general post.

A candidate needs to win votes from all the member states to take the post, and some members have no chance due to this, he added.

The OPEC Secretary General is usually elected from a member country which has a neutral role in the organization, Zangeneh said, adding: “Iran will vote for the candidate whose qualities for the post exceed that of others.”

The final elections of the Iranian Parliament’s governing board were held on Tuesday, and MPs elected Ali Larijani as the Speaker, Masoud Pezeshkian as the 1st Vice-Speaker, and Ali Motahari as the 2nd Vice-Speaker of the Parliament.

The elections were covered by Iranian newspapers on Wednesday in different ways. While all reformist papers expressed their joy over their victory, almost all conservative media refused to even cover the development. Such newspapers as Hemayat, Resalat, and Vatan-e Emrooz didn’t cover the related news, or at most covered Larijani’s re-election as Speaker.

Kayhan, however, mentioned the names of Motahari and Pezeshkian in small font, and said that the reformists were deluded in calling the result a victory.

A press conference for Asghar Farhadi’s latest film The Salesman was also widely covered in Iranian media.

Economic Agreements Worth $1.2bn Signed with Finland and Poland

Mohsen Jalalpour

Mohsen Jalalpour, head of Iran’s Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture told the official IRNA news agency on Wednesday that Iran’s economic delegation signed 50 agreements in different sectors; 30 in Poland and 20 in Finland.

The agreements were either in the form of contracts or memorandums of understanding (MoUs), added the official, noting that some $700m worth of deals were inked in Poland, and the rest in Finland.

Jalalpour said the agreements in Poland mostly involved economic cooperation over power plants (worth $240m) and fisheries (worth nearly $200m).

He said the $500m deals in Finland were sealed on information and communications technology (ICT) as well as industrial machinery.

The agreements were reached during the European tour of Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, whose visits are aimed at developing energy ties, joint investments and the exchange of trade delegations among others.

Zarif arrived in Warsaw on Sunday on the first leg of his official European tour at the head of the 60-strong politico-economic delegation.

Official data shows the value of Iranian exports to Poland stood at $13m, while imports were at $13m in the first five months of 2015. Polish officials say trade between the nations could rise within a few years to $1bn.
