Leader: Resistant Economy, Islamic Culture New Parliament’s Main Priorities

“The materialization of resistance economy, with all its absolute necessities as well as serious efforts to promote and deepen Islamic culture, are the two immediate priorities at present,” Imam Khamenei said in a message to the lawmakers, read out by his Chief of Staff Hojatoleslam Mohammad Mohammadi Golpayegani at the opening session of the legislature on Saturday morning, May 28.

As regards other high priorities, Ayatollah Khamenei highlighted the significance of plans on national power, strengthening of security and making the country immune to threats, which in turn will guarantee social justice, independence and progress.

The Leader also urged the lawmakers to fulfil their “legal and revolutionary duty” to make the Parliament a firm stronghold against the “arrogant powers’ plots and excessive demands”.

Members of the 10th Parliament took the oath of office after hearing the message, followed by a speech from President Hassan Rouhani.

Chairman of the Expediency Council Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani, and Chairman of Assembly of Experts Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati were among the other ranking officials present at the meeting.

The new Speaker will be also elected on Sunday. The two main figures running for the post include the previous Speaker, Ali Larijani, and renowned reformist politician, Mohammad Reza Aref.

IAEA: Iran Has Stayed Within Nuclear Deal Limits

“Throughout the reporting period, Iran had no more than 130 metric tons of heavy water … Iran’s total (low) enriched uranium stockpile did not exceed 300kg,” the report said on Friday May 27, according to Reuters.

“There shouldn’t be any surprises for anyone. Iran continues to honour its commitments,” a senior diplomat said. “At this point in time, it’s clearly below the 300kg limit.”

In July 2015, Iran and the 5+1 group – the United States, Britain, France, China and Russia plus Germany – finalized the text of a nuclear deal. According to the deal, Tehran was obliged to restrict its nuclear activities in exchange for termination of economic sanctions, including financial restrictions. The nuclear deal, officially called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, took effect in January 2016.

Iran Strikes Major Petchem Deal with ADKL

The German company struck the deal on May 26 with Masjed Soleyman Petrochemical Industries Company (MSPIC). The contract’s value could rise as high as €10bn in future.

The money will be invested in the first phase of a petrochemical project in Masjed Soleyman, said ADKL’s Bernd Lenzen, after signing the deal.

Ever since the landmark deal Iran struck with world powers in Vienna over its nuclear program and the removal of US-led sanctions on its key economic sectors, Tehran has been trying to position itself as a safe investment destination, and dozens of high-profile delegations from all continents have made the trek to the country for securing deals in a race to win a bigger market share in a ban-free Iran.

The deal with ADKL was signed during Garrelt Duin’s visit to Iran, the state minister for economic affairs and energy of Germany’s Nordrhein-Westfalen State.

Accordingly, the ADKL will assist the Masjed Soleyman Petrochemical Industries Company (MSPIC) in providing funds, transferring technology and implementing contracts for the project, within the framework of engineering, procurement, construction and finance (EPCF).

MSPIC is keen on working with European enterprises, the company’s Managing Director Yousef Davoodi told reporters after signing the deal.

The project, to be developed in northern parts of Khuzestan province, will produce urea and ammonia as its key products. The daily production target of each in the first phase will be 3,250 tons of urea, and 2,050 tons of ammonia.

Former Indian Envoy: PM Modi’s Visit Was a Major Bilateral Step

In an exclusive interview with IRNA on the Iran visit of PM Modi, Ambassador Phunchok Stobdan said, “The visit was historic, and a major turning point in our bilateral relations. The atmosphere was extremely positive. A new era of optimism has begun.”

Expressing positive feelings about the possibility of the implementation of the agreement between Iran and India on the development of the Iranian port of Chabahar, he said, “A lot of political investment has already been made. The fact that the proposal was lying down for the last 13 years and only now has got sharp attention speaks about India’s sincerity and commitment to implement it.”

“It is not just the governments but the private sector and business lobbies who are also keen to implement the Chabahar Agreement. The political framework is now being laid,” said Stobdan, who accompanied PM Modi during his visit.

Advising Iran to be serious in implementing the Chabahar Agreement, the seasoned diplomat said, “Iran too has to be sincere at this time. An earlier agreement to link Turkmenistan to Bandar Abbas by railway line wasn’t satisfying. Also it is important for Iran not to mix its plan up with Pakistan or China’s OBOR project.”

Elaborating on the importance of the Chabahar Agreement for India, Stobdan said, “I see it as a more than [just an] energy and connectivity project. Certainly it is a strategic project.”

Describing Iran’s future as very bright and exciting after the lifting of international sanctions on the country, he said, “Iran is changing rapidly and beyond expectations. I have been to Iran many times in the past. But this time, change is visible in every sense. I think Iran is going to have a very exciting future, which is what the Iranian people want.”

Iran’s New Parliament Opens

Iran's Parliament

The parliamentarians took the oath of office at the opening session, after hearing a message from Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

President Hassan Rouhani, Chairman of the Expediency Council Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani, Chairman of the Assembly of Experts Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati and Chief of the Leader’s Office Staff Hojjatoleslam Mohammad Mohammadi Golpayegani were among the officials present at the meeting.

The new speaker will be also elected on Sunday. The two main figures running for the post are the previous speaker, Ali Larijani, and the renowned reformist politician, Mohammad Reza Aref.

There are 290 seats in the parliament, known in Iran as the Majlis, 8 of which are still vacant.

The run-off votes were held in late April to fill the remaining seats.

Iran Downplays US House Heavy Water Vote

Last month, the US government completed an $8.6-million deal to buy 32 metric tons of heavy water from Iran. On Wednesday, 251 American lawmakers voted for a bill that would prohibit such purchases next year. The measure is yet to be approved by the US Senate.

“The bill would be unimportant even if it is ratified,” Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Abbas Araqchi said in a TV interview on Thursday night.

“Essentially, in line with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), neither the US nor any other country is obligated to buy heavy water from Iran,” he said.

Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council – the United States, France, Britain, China and Russia – plus Germany signed an agreement on the Iranian nuclear program known as the JCPOA in Vienna on July 14, 2015 following two and a half years of intensive talks

Under the deal, which took effect in January, all nuclear-related sanctions imposed on Iran by the European Union, the UN Security Council and the US would be lifted. Iran has, in return, put some limitations on its nuclear activities.

“Iran is only obligated to offer its surplus of heavy water to international markets for sale,” Araqchi said, adding, “Heavy water is a valuable commodity and there are many who are willing to buy.”

The United States has, subject to the deal, agreed to buy the heavy water from Iran, and the Islamic Republic is in talks with other countries, which would potentially buy 40 more metric tons, the official said.

He said there were attempts underway at promoting Iranophobia by radical forces within the US and the region in order to prevent Tehran from availing itself of the opportunities provided by the JCPOA.

These are the same movements, which tried all they could to prevent the nuclear negotiations from bearing result. Now they have turned their focus onto this issue after their failed sabotage attempts, the Iranian official added.

Spokesman Rejects Saudi FM’s Allegation against Iran

“In order to recognize its own interests, friends and enemies, the Iraqi nation does not need statements by the Foreign Minister of a country which has been the biggest factor of instability and sponsor of terrorism in Iraq, the region and the world during the last decade and a half,” Jaberi Ansari said in a statement on Friday May 27.

“The presence of Iran’s military advisors in Iraq, under the command of Major General Qassem Soleimani, has been undertaken at the request of the legitimate government of Iraq, in order to confront the terrorists and extremists causing instability and insecurity in Iraq and the region,” he added.

Jaberi Ansari further called on the Saudi Foreign Minister to stop trying to deceive the public and distort facts, saying that he should remember that his country is now known as the number one and most dangerous sponsor of terrorism and insecurity in the world.

In an interview with news channel RT Arabic on Thursday May 26, Al-Jubeir claimed that Iran was interfering in the internal affairs of certain regional countries, including Iraq.

The remarks came as Iraq has been facing a growing threat of terrorism, mainly posed by the Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) terrorist group.
