Blast Hits St. Petersburg Metro, Casualties Reported

According to preliminary information released by Russia’s TASS news agency, rescue teams are being dispatched to the site of the blast with a witness telling Reuters that eight ambulances were seen near the Sennaya Ploshchad metro station.

Blast hits St. Petersburg metroAnother Russian news agency, RIA Novosti, however, reported that there have been apparently two separate explosions at two metro stations.

Three metro stations have been closed, according to Fontanka local media outlet.

“An evacuation from the stations is ongoing, there are people injured,” the St. Petersburg metro said in a statement carried by Russian news agencies, adding, “An unidentified object supposedly blew up in a (train) carriage.”

Another report by St Petersburg emergency services said indicated that there were blasts in two train carriages at two metro stations.

Russia’s Interfax news agency cited a source as saying that at least one of the blasts involved a device filled with shrapnel, adding that at least 20 people had been injured.

78% Increase in Iran-EU Trade Transactions

78% Increase in Iran-EU Trade Transactions

Latest statistics by the Eurostat indicate that trade transactions between Iran and the 28 members of the European Union (EU) witnessed a 78-percent increase in 2016 compared to that of a year ago.

Eurostat is a directorate-general of the European Commission located in Luxembourg whose main responsibilities are to provide statistical information and promote the harmonisation of statistical methods across its member states and candidates for accession as well as the European Free Trade Association countries.

According to a Farsi report by Khabaronline News Agency, in 2016, trade between Iran and the EU, which stood at €7.689 billion in 2015, increased to €13.744 billion.

The EU’s imports from Iran reached €4.496 billion in 2016, which was 4.5 times bigger than the figure for 2015 (€1.235 billion). The main reason behind the growth in the European purchases from Iran was the lifting of the oil sanctions on Tehran which led to the resumption of the EU’s oil imports from the country [in 2016].

In this period, France was the biggest European importer of goods from Iran. The European country purchased €1.35 billion worth of products from Iran in 2016 which indicated a twofold growth year-on-year. Italy (€1.049 billion) and Spain (€870 million) were the second and third major importers of goods from Iran in the same period of time, respectively.

The EU’s exports to Iran in 2016 also witnessed a 28-percent growth to amount to €8.248 billion. In 2015, the figure stood at €6.454 billion.

Germany with €2.599 billion was the biggest European exporter of products to Iran in 2016. The country’s exports to Iran in this time-span grew 26 percent compared to the figure for 2015, which was €2.062 billion. In the same period, Italy and the Netherlands sold €1.541 billion and €712 million worth of products to Iran, respectively, to rank second and third among the major EU exporters of goods to Iran.

“Any Adventurism Will Make US Rue the Day”

Secretary of Iran’s Expediency Council Mohsen Rezaee has cautioned that Washington will regret any adventurism concerning Tehran’s moves and measures.

“Iran is not Iraq or Afghanistan, and any adventurism will make you regret it,” Rezaei warned on his Instagram page.

His remarks came in reaction to comments by Joseph Votel, the head of the US Central Command.

Rezaei said Votel has rehashed accusations against Iran and called for military action to stop Iran’s activities.

“In response to [remarks by] this American military commander, one should say that Iran’s activities in the Persian Gulf and the region are aimed at ensuring security and stability,” the Iranian official underlined.

“You’d better halt illegitimate interference in the region by your allies and stop them from killing people,” said Rezaei.

“Beware! They might pull the rug from under your feet; and don’t forget the case of Mr. Bush when it comes to warmongering,” said Rezaei.

“The pilot of Buddha Air informed us that he saw a leopard-like animal on the airport ground. We have called forest office officials,” Thakur said.

The leopard soon disappeared into the storm drains along the runway and a search is on to locate the wild animal.

Security agencies including police, hunters and forest officials have been deployed to trace the animal.

Thakur, however, added that they were unsure if the animal seen was a leopard. “We cannot say it was a leopard. It can also be a cat.”

The closure, which lasted for about half an hour, led to disruption of flight operations.
The international airport has some forested area on the northern edge. And this was not the first time flight disruption had happened at the airport due to intrusion by animals. Flights have to either overshoot or abort landing due to animals like dogs, monkeys and goat trespassing the airport area.

600kg Beluga Caught from Caspian Sea

Fishermen have caught a huge 600-kilogram beluga – or European sturgeon – in Gomishan County, northern Iranian province of Golestan, from the Caspian Sea, which has 93 kilograms of roe in her ovary.

According to a Farsi report by Fars News, Gomishan County is the northernmost city along the Caspian Sea’s coastline in Iran.

The Beluga is a species of anadromous fish in the sturgeon family. It is found primarily in the Caspian and Black Sea basins, and occasionally in the Adriatic Sea. Heavily fished for the female’s valuable roe – known as beluga caviar – the beluga is a huge and late-maturing fish that can live for 118 years. The species’ numbers have been greatly reduced by overfishing and poaching, prompting many governments to enact restrictions on its trade.

The largest accepted record is of a female caught in 1827 in the Volga estuary, the longest river in Europe, at 1,571 kilograms and 7.2 metres (24 ft).

Iran Restarts Production of Mothballed Unsinkable Boat

Veteran fishermen on southern Iranian Qeshm Island have begun building the home-made boat known as “Shaashak,” which is regarded as one of the island’s ancient handicrafts, according to a senior local official.

According to a Farsi report by IRNA, the boat will never go down in rough seas, said Seyyed Mohammad Amin Ja’fari, the head of the Toursim, Handicrafts and Tourism Department of the Qeshm Free Zone Organization.

The unsinkable boat had been out of production for several decades, he said, adding the first Shaashak will be put on public display once it is built.

“Shaashak is a kind of boat which was made out of palm tree branches in the distant past and would not sink in the sea under any circumstances. The residents of Qeshm, especially those living in the Dayrestan village, would use it for fishing in shallow waters,” the official explained.

Mothballed Unsinkable BoatThe Iranian-made boat used to be used by people on Qeshm Island as well as in the provinces of Sistan and Baluchestan, Hormozgan and Bushehr, according to Ja’fari.

However, he said, the boat is now showcased in the museums of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and erroneously introduced as a UAE-made product.

Residents of Qeshm Island enjoy a vast knowledge of maritime science, he said.

According to the top official, numerous types of boats were innovated on the island in ancient times.

Local artefacts and their real creators will be introduced once the island’s anthropology museum is inaugurated, added Ja’fari.

Qeshm is measured at 500 sq kilometres, making it the largest island in the Persian Gulf.

Qeshm is located to the south of southern Iranian Hormozgan province

In Colombia, families and rescuers are searching through mud-plastered rubble for victims of flooding and landslides that have killed 254 people, injured hundreds and devastated entire neighborhoods.

Several rivers burst their banks near Colombia’s southwestern city of Mocoa in the early hours of Saturday, sending water, mud and debris crashing down streets and into houses as people slept.

Elsewhere in Southeast Asia, Indonesian rescuers have found one body and continued to look for 28 other people feared to be buried after a landslide triggered by heavy rain on Java island.

Iranians Celebrate Nature Day in Outdoor Picnics

Iranians uphold the time-honored tradition on the thirteenth day of Nowruz by spending the day outdoors.

‘Sizdah’ means thirteen, and ‘bedar’ means to get rid of, bearing the meaning of ‘getting rid of thirteen’. Sizdah-bedar also marks the end of Nowruz celebrations, which begin on the first day of spring.

 

A ritual performed at the end of the picnic day is to throw away the “sabzeh” from the Nowruz’s “Haftsin table”. The sabzeh is supposed to have collected all the sickness, pain and ill fate hiding on the path of the family throughout the coming year.

Preserving the environment is also an integral part of what Iranians do on Sizdah-bedar.

On Saturday, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi rejected the anti-Iran comments by US Defense Secretary James Mattis as another episode in a series of baseless accusations.

Mattis said in London on Friday that Iran is continuing to behave as an exporter of terrorism.

In response, Qassemi said that such American attempts to mislead the world’s public opinion about the origins as well as the financial and ideological sources of terrorism and the politically motivated and biased moves to draw the international community’s attention away from the real sponsors of terrorism have been the main causes of failure of the international anti-terror efforts.

“As long as certain countries, mainly the US, are determined to ignore the actual sources of terrorism and Takfiri-Wahhabi extremism and accuse the countries like Iran, which itself has been a victim of terrorism in different shapes over the past 4 decades,… one cannot and should not expect to see the dirty and developing tumor of terrorism removed,” he added.

Qassemi finally called on American officials to stop resorting to the previous failed policy of political employment of terrorism and accusing Iran, saying the US had better make some of its Middle East friends, which support the terrorist groups brazenly, cut off financial, military and spiritual supports for Takfiri terrorists.
